This invention relates to a trouser leg bottom guard and more particularlyto a trouser leg bottomguard which can easily and readily be affixed and removed from the trouser leg without the use of any mechanical implements.

My improvement contemplates preventing the wearing away of the inside face of the trouser leg bottom resulting from constant frictional contact with the shoe as a person walks or runs. Heretofore, the practice has been to sew, stitch or otherwise aflix some suitable material to the trouser leg bottom in a substantially permanent manner in order to prevent the trouser leg bottom from becoming shabby and worn out from rubbing against the back of the shoe. Since the trouser leg bottom guard was more or less permanently affixed to the trouser leg, it presented marked disadvantages when the trousers were dry cleaned, laundered, or pressed. Unless the guard was removed beforehand, the contour thereof was visible on the external face of the trouser cuff after pressing, or the guard was shrunk or otherwise distorted during laundering of the trousers. The operation of allixing the guard member and then removing and affixing it anew was bothersome and involved considerable expense and labor.

Where the guard was sewed to the trouser leg bottom, of necessity, separate guards had to be employed for each pair of trousers. Since, two guards are required for each pair of trousers and since most persons own more than one pair of trousers, the expense and labor of affixing said guards would rise proportionally to the number of pairs of trousers that a person owned.

In order to provide a removable guard member, snap members were sewed to the inside face of the trouser bottom and to the guard member itself. However, there was a tendency for the snaps to be ripped off or otherwise damaged or shifted in position during laundering or dry cleaning. Also, there was the additional expense of the cost of snaps and the labor involved to sew the snaps on the guard member and trouser bottom to be considered in addition to the inconvenience thereof.

Where it was desired to use guard members on trousers not provided with cuffs, the stitches securing the guard members or the snaps, as the case may be, were visible on the exterior face of the trouser bottom and detracted measurably from the appearance of the trousers.

It is therefore apparent that there is a need inthe art for a trouser bottom guard member which can easily be affixed and removed by the average person lacking in the skill of sewing. The guard member must be relatively inexpensive to attach and be adapted to be secured to any type of trouser.

Accordingly, the main object of my invention is to provide a trouser leg guard device for preventing the wearing away of trouser legs due to rubbing against the back of the shoes.

Another object of my invention is to provide a trouser leg bottom guard which can readily and easily be affixed and removed without the use of any mechanical implement.

Still a further object of my invention is to provide a trouser leg bottom guard which can be afiixed to any type of trouser leg whether or not said trousers have cuffs.

Still a further object of my invention is to provide a relatively inexpensive means of preventing trouser legs from becoming shabby which can be affixed and removed by the average person who lacks the skill and ability to properly sew or stitch a guard on his trousers.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, arrangement and a combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention;

For the purpose of facilitating an understanding of this invention, there is illustrated in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment thereof, from an inspection of which, when considered in connection with the following description, this invention, its mode of construction, assembly and operation, and many of its advantages should be readily understood and appreciated.

Referring to the drawings in which the same characters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding of similar parts throughout the several figures of the drawings:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a trouser leg bottom embodying the invention and showing the manner in which same is attached thereto.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the trouser leg bottom uard.

Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, in the direction indicated by the arrows.

Edges I2, I2 are provided at the rear and front portions of the trouser. leg respectively forming the creases of the trouser'leg, said crease I2 providing a guide line for adjusting the trouser bottom guard member on the trouser bottom. The guard member is designated generally by the reference character I 4 and is positioned on the inside face of the trouser bottom I9 adjacent to crease I2 as shown in Fig. 1.

As thus far described the trouser leg bottom and the position of the guard member thereon is not intended to be covered by my invention, which is specifically directed to the guard member and the manner in which same is affixed to the trouser bottom.

Referring now to Fig. 2, the guard member I4 may be made from leather, plastic, canvas, fabric or any other suitable material and having a more or less butterfly shape, after it is assembled or use. Said guard member formed of one continuous piece of material and then folded in half to provide wings I5, I6, said wings I5, I6 being sewn together laterally at 23 along the entire width 'of the guard member i4. There is thus provided a hollowed cylindrical portion 24' between the stitch 23 and the edge 24 of the guard member l4, wherein the pin 26 is attached as will 'be described subsequently in fuller detail. There is also provided a stiif hinge-like juncture at edge '24, whereby the pin 26 may be grasped for piercing the cloth. Thus, it can be seen that the guard member I4 is adapted to be positioned on the inside face of the trouser bottom as shown in Fig. 1.

The pins H are attached along the exterior face of the wings I5, I6. Since the pins I! are attached in the same manner on the respective wings I5, I6, the manner of attachment on wing |5 only will be described. The pin I? is formed of one continuous length of metal having a loop I 9 along the length I8 and having a portion thereof 2B bent perpendicular to said portion I8 and provided with sharpened points 2|, 22, at each end thereof for piercing through the material of the trouser bottom IE3. The pin i! in addition to being pushed through a portion of the wing I5 is attached longitudinally along the exterior face of the wing I5 above the edge 2'! of the wing I5 by means of a tab member 28 which is attached over the loop I9 to the exterior face of the wing IS. The tab member 28 may be rectangular in shape and made of the same material as the guard member I4. It is sewn, glued or otherwise stuck to the wing l5 in a permanent manner so as to rigidly hold the pin I! in position for piercing the trouser bottom I0. I

The pin 26 is shaped like a woman's bobbing pin, that is, having two prongs with its exterior prong 29 sharpened to a point for piercing. A

slit 25 is provided in the cylindrical portion 24' of the guard member I4 through which the interior prong of the pin 25 is entered and held rigid by the cylindrical portion 24' and prevented from sliding out of the cylindrical portion 24 when adjusted on the trouser bottom I0.

In order securely to attach the guard member I4 to the trouser bottom II], the former is placed along the inside face of the trouser bottom l0 so that the edge 24 of the guard member ID lies along the crease I2 of the trouser bottom It! and the edges 2'! lie along the edges I3 of the trouser bottom. The prong 29 of the pin 26 is then pierced through the material of the trouser bottom I B at the crease I 2 so that the guard member I4 is positioned thereon as described above. It

will be "noted that the stiff hinge-like juncture provided at 24 is adapted to be grasped pursuant to pushing pin 25 through the cloth of the bottom H3. The portions 20 are then stuck through the material of the trouser bottom It so that the guard member I4 is attached as shown in Fig. 1. Also, the prong 22 is afiixed to the cloth of the trouser bottom to keep the wing I5 secured against the side thereof. Thereafter, the guard member I4 is rigidly afiixed and prevented from sliding off while a person is movingby the downward biasing moment of the pin 26, while the wings I5, I6 are maintained in place by pins II.

In Figs. 4 and 5 and 6 I have shown a modified form of the inventionfin which the guard member 3| has a similarly shaped member 3!) adapted to be superimposed thereon and sewn and/or lued thereto. The member 30 has its center portion cut out in the manner shown in Fig. 4. After superimposing and attaching the member 30 on the guard member 3|, the same is folded over and a stitch 35 is sewn laterally across the face of the guard member 3|. Thus, there is provided a cylindrical portion 3'! under which the pin 36 may be fastened as at 35. said pin 36 is a straight pin and provided with a knob 4| at the end opposite the sharpened point 68. The pin 33 is fastened under the portion 32 of member 39 against the outside face of the guard member 3|. The pins 33 are straight and each are provided with knobs 39 opposite their sharpened ends 40 so as to keep the pins 33 secure. It is desirable first to push the pins 33 through the material of the guard member 3| up to the knobs 39 and then aiiix the member 39 on the guard member 3| in the manner described.

It is apparent that it is possible to dispense with member 29 and merely attach pieces of material over the pins at their attached positions so as to keep the pins fixed on the guard member.

In order securely to attach the guard member 30 to the trouser leg bottom It. the same procedure as described above is followed. The pins 36 and 33 are pushed through the material of the trouser leg bottom It so that the edge 43 lies adjacent the crease I2 and the edges 4d lie adjacent edges |3 of the trouser leg bottom I0 in the position hown in Fig. 1.

It will be seen from the above that I have provided a unique trouser bottom guard member easily adapted to be attached and removed without the use of any mechanical implements. I have provided a construction which allows for use on different pairs of trousers Without the necessity of sewing or providing snaps for holding the guard member, thus making this construction attractive to the general public lacking in theskill to sew or stitch.

I have also found that the trousers can be pressed with my new device remaining therein. Various modifications coming within the spirit of my invention may suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.

Hence I do not wish to be limited to the specific form shown or use mentioned, except to the extent indicated in the appended claims, which are to be interpreted as broadly as the state of the art will permit.

I claim:

1. In a removable trouser leg bottom guard construction for preventing wearing out of trouser leg bottoms, a pair of flexible wing members integral with each other and joined along a vertical line to form a relatively stiff hinge-like juncture, a plurality of piercing members, means for fixing said piercing members on said wing members in positions adapted to enable the guard member easily to be removably secured to said trouser leg bottoms on the interior thereof with the piercing members engaged in the cloth of said bottoms, said means including a hollow cylindrical portion in said juncture, a slit in said cylindrical portion, a double pronged piercing member engaged in said slit having one prong thereof exterior of said juncture, and one prong secured on the interior of said cylindrical portion.

2. In a removable trouser leg bottom guard construction for preventing wearing out of trouser leg bottoms, a pair of wing members integral with each other and having a fold line intermediate the opposed outer ends thereof, said members being joined along a line spaced apart from said fold line whereby to form a relatively stiff hinge-like juncture, a downwardly directed prong secured to said juncture and parallel thereto and adapted to be inserted downwardly into the trouser leg bottom for pinning same to said leg bottom at the rear thereof, and a pair of prongs secured one to each of said wing members and arranged to be engaged to the interior sides of the trouser leg bottom for securing the respective wing members thereto in readily removable engagement.

3. In a removable trouser leg bottom guard construction for preventing wearing out of trouser leg bottoms, a pair of wing members integral with each other and having a fold line intermediate the opposed outer ends thereof, said members being joined along a line spaced apart from said fold line whereby to form a relatively stifi hinge-like juncture, a downwardly directed prong secured to said juncture and parallel thereto and adapted to be inserted downwardly into the trouser leg bottom for pinning same to said leg bottom at the rear thereof, and a pair of prongs secured one to each of said wing members and arranged to be engaged to the interior sides of the trouser leg bottom for securing the respective wing members thereto in readily removable engagement, said prongs each having piercing ends disposed in a plane substantially parallel. to and spaced from the surface of said wing members.

4. In a removable trouser leg bottom guard construction for preventing wearing out of trouser leg bottoms, a strip of material having a central fold line intermediate the ends thereof whereby to form a pair of wing members, said members being joined along a line spaced apart from said fold line thereby to form a relatively stiff hinge-like juncture arranged to coincide with the trouser crease when said guard is installed, a hollow cylindrical portion in said juncture, a slit in said cylindrical portion adjacent the top end thereof, a double pronged piercing member engaged in said slit having one prong exterior of said juncture and one prong secured on the interior of the cylindrical portion, said exterior prong having its body prong disposed parallel with said juncture and adapted to be inserted downwardly into the trouser crease at the trouser leg for pinning same to said bottom at the rear thereof, and a pair of prongs secured one to each of said wing members and arranged to be engaged to the interior sides of said bottom for securing the respective wing members thereto in readily removable engagement, tab members attached to said wing members superimposed on portions of said prongs and thereby holding said prongs in position on said wing members, said prongs each having piercing ends disposed in a plane substantially parallel to and spaced from the surface of said wing members.
