'Ihis invention relates to improvements in stands or tables.

The primary object is to provide a stand or table, suitable for use as a display stand, or shopping island, in stores or other analogous purposes, and which is extremely simple, neat, attractive and inexpensive in construction and appearance. Another object is to provide a knock-down stand which requires no nails or screws for its assembly and which is nevertheless sturdy and rigid when set up for use. Still a further object is to provide a stand or table of the foregoing characteristics, which consists merely of two identical standards or support pillars which decrease in diameter upwardly in steps forming annular shoulders downwardly against a series of shelves or supports may rest, said shelves having openings to closely t the standards immediately above the shoulders on which they rest. I further provide certain other supports and fastenings which, while not essential, may be advantageous.

These and other more detailed and specic objects will be disclosed in the course of the following specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a stand or table in accordance with my invention.

Fig. 2 is a side view, partially in section.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged, fragmentary detail sectional view.

Referring now more particularly and by reference characters to the drawing, my improved stand or table as constructed in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a pair of standards designated generally at A and a series of shelves or supports indicated generally at B, and here shown as being four in number. All of these parts, as well as others later to be described, may be made of wood.

The standards A are identical, and each is progressively, sharply reduced in diameter in a stepped formation and upward direction, thus providing a comparatively-large base or bottom portion l, and three (more or less and depending on the number of shelves) superimposed portions 8, 9- and I0 each of which is smaller than the one next below. Thus there is found a series of annular, horizontally surfaced shoulders or rests, II, I2 and I3. It is to be understood, however, that the sections or portions l through I Il are all integral, and I prefer that the standards be round since they may then be readily turned to shape.

The lowermost one of the shelves B, designated at I4, has openings I5 adjacent its ends which are adapted to nicely lit the portions 8 of the standards and thus to rest upon, and be supported by, the lowermost shoulders II. In similar fashion the next shelf Iupward, indicated at I6, has openings I'I to t the portions 9 and rest on the shoulders I2, and the next shelf I8 has openings I9 to slip down over portions I0 and come to rest upon the shoulders I3. The last and top or uppermost shelf 20 may, as here shown, be supported on removable diametrically extending and slightly projecting dowel pins 2I in the upper portions I or these portions may have a nal shoulder (not shown) to support this shelf. The top shelf, of course, has openings 22 to slip down on the upper ends of the standards, however they are formed.

As added supports short legs 23 may be provided in the lower shelf I4 if desired, said legs having reduced upper ends 24 to removably seat in sockets 25 formed in the underside of the shelf, as seen in Fig. 2.

In use the standards may be set up in properly spaced relation and the shelves I4, I6, I8 and 20 put in place in that order, the pins 2l being placed, of co-urse, after the three lower shelves are in place. It will thus be evident that the stand or table may be readily set up for use, or as readily knocked down and stored away when desired. The neat and attractive appearance of the table will be apparent, and to this I contribute further by making the shelves, as shown, with rounded ends and of varying length and width so that the size decreases upwardly.

Supplementary anchorage for the shelves may be provided if desired by the provision, as shown in Fig. 3, of wooden pegs 26 in any number adapted to be set in openings 21 in the shelves and down into sockets 28 in the shoulders in the standards. These pegs will prevent twisting and provide added rigidity as will be understood.

It is understood that suitable modifications may be made in the structure as disclosed, provided such modifications come within the spirit and scope of the appended claim. Having now therefore fully illustrated and described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

In a device of the character described, a pair of upright wooden standards having integral round portions of varying diameter each smaller than the one next below and forming vertically spaced annular projecting shoulders, a shelf havingopenings sized to fit down upon each shoulder, an upper shelf having an opening to fit the smallest upper end of the standards, means on the standards below their upper ends for supporting the upper shelf, legs attached to and depending from the lowermost shelf outwardly of the lower ends of the standards to give added support to that shelf, pegs mounted in the shoulders and projecting outwardly therefrom, and the shelves seated on the shoulders having openings in their undersides to fit over the pegs.
