This invention relates to a container and particularly to a combination container and closure therefor.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein: K

Figure 2 is a side elevation of the container with parts broken away and parts in cross section.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the container illustrated in Figure 2 and illustrating the locking mechanism in detail.
Figure 4 is a side elevation with parts broken away and parts in cross section illustrating a modified form of the container incorporating a secondary closure in the main closure thereof.
By referring to the drawings and Figures 1, 2 and 3 in particular, it will be seen that a container has been disclosed which consists of a main body section I including a bottom II and having an outwardly anged top I2 adapted to receive a closure I3 which is provided with a sealing gasket I4 so located as to engage the uppermost portion of the out-turned flange I2 of the container IIJ. The container I0 is preferably formed, as best illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings, from a relatively heavy metal stamping as, for example, 16 gauge steel, in the form of a flanged head which comprises the bottom II of the container in assembled form and a cylindrical body section of the body I0 is preferably formed of relatively heavy sheet metal 1 claim. This overlyingang'evwhi'ch provides for a welding seam-'between tlie cylindrical body section IB'iof the container and'the bottom l I thereof also provides a reinforci'ngv collar band thereabout which enables the' container to resist roughh'andling. A pair ofhan'dles rI'- disposed on a4 vertical airisarer located on the` container one on the cylindrical body section I0 and one on the side of -thel bot'-v tom section II, one being immediately above the other, and which location of the handles I6 provides for the convenient handling of the container as in emptying the contents therefrom.
The closure I3, which is in the form of a anged dished-out head of an over-all diameter larger than the largest diameter of the outturned flange I2 at the top of the container I9, is adapted to be positioned thereover and to register therewith in connection with the rubber sealing gasket I4 which can be formed of any desired type of rubber such as, for example, sponge rubber. In order that the closure I3 may be locked on the container I0, an inturned hook I1 is formed at one side thereof so as to overlie a section of the ange I2 at the top of the container and a slideably mounted cam I8 and operating lever I9 are positioned at the opposite side of the closure preferably in a boss 20 formed thereon. The operating lever I9 of the cam I8 is rotatably positioned in an opening in the boss 20 and thereby enables the cam I8 to be revolved so as to bring it into engagement with the out-turned flange I2 of the container I0 when the cam I8 and operating lever I9 are moved inwardly toward the container I0.
It will thus be seen that a simple and durable container and closure has been disclosed, the closure portion of which may be conveniently and simply locked to the container portion through the simple manual actuation of the cam and lever I8 and I9, respectively. In order that the closure I3 may be supported in open relation to the top of the container I0, a supporting hinge-like structure 2I is provided on the section of the container normally lying adjacent the` hook I1 formed on the closure. This construction in which the hook I'I is 'provided with a downwardly inturned end and the supporting structure 2| is formed with an upwardly turned end, as illustrated in Figure 2, supports the closure I3 on the container I0 when it is in opened position and standing vertically or approximately so with respect to the container I0, and the hook I'I and supporting structure ZI are in engagement.
By referring now to Figure 4 of the drawings a modified form of closure for use with the container will be seen. In Figure 4 a container body 22 is provided with a closure 23, the structure of which is similar in all respects with that of the closure illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3 and heretofore described, with the exception that it is provided with a secondary closure 24 which is hinged as at 25 to the closure 23 and is provided with an upstanding, outwardly turned handle 26 to enable it to be conveniently moved into the interior of the container to permit objects to be placed in the container through the opening thus provided. The secondary closure 24 is preferably sprung with relation to the closure 23 as by provision of a flat spring 21 incorporated in the hinge structure 25 and adapted to normally maintain the secondary closure 24 in closed, horizontal relation with the closure 23.
It will thus be seen that a container particularly suited for the reception of rubbish, ashes, garbage, etc. has been disclosed which is provided with a closure which may be locked in position thereon by means of the cam I8 and cam operating lever I9, and which may be supported in open position on'the closure by means of the combination hook I 1- and supporting hinge 2l.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In a container having a cylindrical body including a bottom section aillxed thereto, means for supporting a closure with respect thereto, said means including an upturned projecting member formed on the outside of the said cylindrical body and near the upper edge thereof, a closure for the said container comprising a anged circular disc of a diameter greater than the outer diameter of the upper edge of the said cylindrical body and having an inturned and downturned hook formed on the inside of the flange of the said disc and adapted to engage the said upturned projecting member on the outside of the said container at all times so as tc hold the closure in open and closed position on the container.
