- W W. L. TROUP an J..A. 0. GERMER.
GARAXLE BOX. No. 257,109. Patented Apr.'25, 1882.
v 0AA ATTORIQEY PETERS. PMlwLilhogr-lpher. Washmgion, u. c.
UNITED STATES VILLIAM L. TROUP AND JOHN A.
PATENT OFFICE.
O. GERMER, Oh HARRISBURG, PA.
CAR-AXLE BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,109, dated April 25, 1882.
Application filed November 23,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIA L. TnoUP and JOHN A. O. GERMER, both of Harrisburg, county ot'Dauphin, and State ofPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Gar-Axle Boxes, the same being an improvement on our invention under the same subject patented August 9, 1881, and numbered 245,586, of which first-named invention the following is a specification.
Our presentinvention has for its object, first, to construct and arrange the pillow block which closes the top of the casing or box and the ledges or ofi'sets at said opening in such manner that only a small amount ofjacking of the truck will be necessary to disengage the interlocked parts on said block and at said opening; second, hinging the spring door or lid of the casing to the removable pillow-piece that-broken doors or hinges may be replaced at less cost and trouble than where the doorknuckles are made part of the casing; third, providing the under side of the removable pillow-block with a shouldered longitudinal seat, in which the top of thejournal-box is admitted and guided against canting by the side action of the ear-axle when the brake-liner acts on the wheel. We attain these objects by the construction and arrangement of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of the easing and of the parts therein, the same being taken at the indicated line W, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of our invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pillow-block with the door creasing-lid attached thereto. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the pillow-block, journal-box, and axle, superimposed in the order recited.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
We aim by our present improvement not only to remove a damaged journal-box more easily than heretofore by removing the top of the casin g or the pillow-block to make said box more accessible, but we specially construct and arrange the parts that said pillow-block can be removed by as little'jaeking as possible, about five-eighths of an inch eler'ation of the truck- 7 frame being sufficient for said purpose. This result-is attained by locating the detents of said block quite up in the bevel and step-form edges of the casings top opening, and by making said detents and the notches for them in said block shallow vertically.
Referring to the above-mentioned drawings, A A denote the walls ofthe easing; Z 2, its bottom and front. 25 tare bolts holding the truckbars T T S thereon; and B denotes the rear end of the top of the ca ing, the only part of top east shut.
F denotes the removable pillow-block, having in its side edges the step-forin recesses m a, into which corresponding lugs, m n, in the casing-opening, near its top, apply as detents to hold said block against displacement until the truck isjacked up to a little more than the height of the recesses m a.
P P denote ledges or guides on the under side of said pillow-block, forming a seat between them, into which the top of the journal-box Gr applies, and by which it is steadied on the axle M against lateral canting, as described.
K denotes a partition in the casing, whose top K is by our arrangement for jacking eapahle of being higher than usual, thus ati'ording a deeper chamber for the stnfling and the lubricant.. The collar-recess K is made in the -usual way to exclude dust from the casing.
The door or lid Q, is hinged at knuckles L O to the pillow-block F, as shown, a spring, I), being combined therewith in the usual man ner. The chief advantage of this construction is this: The door or the pillow-block, if broken, can be replaced at less cost and delay than the casing, the door and its hinge being the parts most liable to break.
For securingbyLetters Patent of the United States what we deem new and useful, we claim- 1. Thepillow-piece F, provided with springhinge knuckles L or O, in combination with the spring-door Q, hinged thereto and removable therewith from the casing and repairable distinct from the casing A A, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The guiding-ledges P P, arranged longh tudinally on the under side ofthe pillow F, in our invention we have hereunto set our hands combination with the brass or journal box G,. and seals. admitted at its top between said ledges to resist the displacing side action of the brake, 5 and that said box may be freed of said ledges U l to facilitate its removal after said pillow-piece Attest: has been removed, substantially as set forth. THEOPHILUs \VEAVER,
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as PETER STUGKER.
