Thesupnerting;v strut 512,; as. ,herein..shown,..may comprise a wire rod bent in the 'formrnofuane-x 3 closed at its lower end and provided with horizontally extended pin portions 22 at the free ends of the X arranged to fit into openings formed in the upper ends of the vertical legs of the U-frame to provide a pivotal connection with the frame. The pin portion 22 may and prefer- I2 serve to limit the pivotal movement of the members and to dispose the frame at a convenient angle when in use.

When the back rest is to be used as a bag, the strut I2 is rocked inwardly parallel to the frame l0 and the lower portion l8 of the flexible sheet I2 is folded up parallel to the upper portion I6. Any usual or preferred expedient may be employed to fasten the longitudinal marginal edges of the upper and; lower portion together to close the sides, and, as herein illustrated, the securing means may comprise buttons 26 attached to flap portions 28 which latter are secured to the marginal edges of the sheet adjacent the upper half 16 thereof. In operation, the flaps 28 are folded inwardly to present the buttons in a position to be received in the button holes 30 formed in the lower half of the elongated sheet. The outer ends of the sheet may be provided with handles 32 for convenience in carrying the bag, and, a pocket 34 may be sewn in the sheet if desired. The bag in its closed position is illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6.

Referring now to Figs. 3 and 7, a modified form of the combination back rest and bag structure includes a second U-shaped open frame 35 for the lower half 18 of the elongated sheet and which is arranged to be extended through loop members 38 similar to the loops above described. The U-frame members 10, 36 may be connected at their horizontal arms by endless strap members 40 or by any other preferred means to permit the U-frames to be folded together in parallel relation, as shown in Fig. 7, to form side closures for the bag. In order to retain the U-frames in their closed position a ring 42 is provided on the upper end of each vertical leg of the frame l0 which rings are arranged to loop over the free ends 44 of the U-frame 36, as illustrated.

From the above description it will be seen that the present invention provides a superior combination backrest and bag structure in which none of the frame portions are exposed in a position to cause discomfort to the occupant when in use and in which the flexible sheet material is detachably secured to the frame in a maner such as to permit removal thereof for laundering or other purposes.

While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been herein illustrated and described, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied in other forms within the scope of the following claims.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:

1. In a combination back rest and bag structure, an elongated flexible sheet provided upon one surface and adjacent the marginal side edges of the upper half of the sheet with elongated and parallel loops, a U-shaped framework having the legs of the U inserted through the open loops and with the cross member of the U disposed below the ends of the loops and extending across the mid-section of the elongated sheet, a supporting strut having the upper ends thereof free to be capable of being compressed toward one another to permit the ends when released to be extended laterally through openings formed in the upper end portions of the aforesaid loops and through the legs of said. U-shaped frame member whereby to detachably secure the elongated sheet to the supporting frame member and to pivotally attach the strut to the frame member and to the said flexible sheet, the lower half of said flexible sheet being of suflicient length to permit it to be folded upwardly to enclose therein the U-shaped frame and said strut and into a position in which the top and bottom edges of said elongated flexible sheet are in substantial alignment, and means for detachably securing together the thus folded half sections of the flexible sheet in bag forming relation.

2. In a combination back rest and bag structure, an elongated flexible sheet provided upon one surface and adjacent the marginal side edges of the upper half of the sheet, with elongated and parallel loops, a U-shaped framework having the legs of the U inserted through the open loops and with the cross member of the U disposed below the ends of the loops and extending across the mid-section of the elongated sheet, a supporting strut having the upper ends thereof extended through openings formed in the upper end portions of the aforesaid loops and through the legs of said U-shaped frame member whereby to detachably secure the elongated sheet to the supporting frame member and to pivotally attach the strut to the frame member and said flexible sheet, the lateral portions of said upper half section of said elongated flexible sheet being provided with flaps extended beyond the side edges thereof and adapted to cooperate with the lower half section of said sheet when the latter has been folded into bag-forming position to form with said folded sections a bag, said flaps and said lower half section being provided with means for detachably securing the parts together.
