The present invention relates to a combination container and handle for razor blade, brush, or the like, and has for an object to provide a device of this character of compact and economical construction which may be conveniently carried in the pocket or purse. A further object is to provide a combination container and handle device having pocket means adapted to receive one of a plurality of different types of insert members, as for instance a razor blade, a brush, a magnifying glass, or the like. It is particularly proposed to provide a container consisting of a pair of substantially identical cover parts, hingedly mounted upon a supporting member which constitutes a retainer for the insert, said cover members in one position adapted to enclose the insert, and, in another position, to expose the insert and constitute manipulating handle means therefor.

It is further proposed to provide cooperative means between the supporting member and the cover members, whereby in either the closed position or open position, the parts will be retained in relatively fixed relation to each other, so that, in the closed position, there is no chance that the cover members will accidentally open, and in the open position, the cover members will constitute a rigid handle means for manipulating the insert.

With the above and other objects in view, an embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings and this embodiment will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and the invention will be finally also pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, the combination container and handle device comprises a pocket supporting member, indicated generally as it, and a pair of substantially identical cover members, indicated generally as. l II I, hingedly connected to the supporting member for movement between a closed position, for containing an insert member connected to the supporting member, and an open position to constitute a manipulating handle for the insert member.

The pocket supporting member I0 is preferably formed from a sheet metal blank [2, as shown for example in Fig. 11, this blank being of substantially rectangular form and provided at its ends with ear forming portions 13-43. The rectangular blank is formed up at each side of its central longitudinal base portion l4, in line with the ears l3l3, to form abutment shoulders l5l5 at each side, and its marginal side portions are bent inwardly from these shoulders |5l5, and upwardly in spaced parallel relation to each other to form the side walls Iii-l6 of an insert receiving pocket ll. The side walls Iii-I6 are each provided centrally with an outwardly embossed projection 18, for constituting abutments for the cover members, as will hereinafter more fully appear. These side walls are also each provided with an insert retaining boss [9, for cooperation with an aperture, recess, or the like, of the insert member, as will thereinafter more fully appear. The ears I3-l 3 are bent upwardly at right angles to the base I4 against the ends of the side walls Iii-I6, and are disposed at each side of the side portions to provide hinge supports for the cover members, being each provided for this purpose with bearing holes 20-40, disposed in longitudinal alignment at each side of the side walls.

The cover members Il-l I, are preferably of identical construction for the purpose of convenience and economy in manufacture, although it will be understood that it is not essential that they be of identical construction. These cover.

moulded plastic material, and each consists of a rectangular panel 2|, provided along its top and side edges with an inwardly extended flange 22, and provided at its lower edge with a hinge forming rib 23, which is tangential with the inner surface of the panel 2|, and projects outwardly of its outer surface. The ends of the rib 23 are set inwardly from the lower ends of side flanges 22, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, and each end is provided with an integrally formed pin projection 24, adapted to fit in one of the holes 28 of the supporting member [0. n

In order to assemble the cover members, the pin projections 24, are engaged with the bearing holes 20, of the ears I3, either by slightly springing the ears outwardly to engage the pin proje'c tions therewith, or by leaving one ;f the ears [.3 bent slightly outwardly prior to assembly, so that it can be bent into its right angular retair'iing relation with the cover members.

In the closed position of the covermembers the edges of the flanges 22 meet along :the central plane of the device, and in this position the inner surfaces of the panel portions 2|, engage firmly against the projections I 8, so as to prevent any looseness between the supporting member and the cover members. Each of the cover members is provided at its .upper edge with a clasp formation 25, having an inclined retaining and cam surface 25 at its inner end. In closing the :cover members, theca-m surfaces 28 slip pasteachother into over-lapping relation, through slight sidewise shifting movement of the cover members relative to each other, this-action being permitted by the inherent resiliency 10f the parts of the .device, the .cover members being thereupon effectually retained in closed .position, as shown in Fig. 3. In .order to open the cover members, .a twisting force is applied to the two .clasp .mem.' bers .by the finger .to force the :cam surface 26.26 out .of engagement with each other, this action also being permitted by the inherent re siliency .of the parts of the device.

slight, as the two covers may be forced together through their inherent resiliency by gripping pressure of the fingers. If there is a relatively wide space, this forcing of the cover members together may strain the hinge pins. However, with a very slight spacing the covers may be pressed together Without appreciable strain upon the hinge pins.

In Figs. '7 to 11, there is illustrated a brush insert comprising a supporting base 29 provided with tufts of bristles 30, and having a downward- .ly projecting Web portion 3|, for insertion into the pocket I7 of the supporting member It, being provided withsnitable apertures 32-32 for engagement by the retaining bosses I9. Obviously, other types of inserts may be employed, being adapted for insertion by providing the insert with suitable pocket engaging means such as Web portion '3! -0f the brush insert.

I have illustrated and described a preferred and satisfactory embodiment .of the invention, but it will be understood. that changes may be made therein, within the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. Acombination container .and handle device, comprising a supporting member comprised of a base portion having laterally spaced abutment shoulders at its opposed side edges, article retaining means at the upper sideof said base portion adapted to support an article in upwardly projecting relation thereto, and hinge bearing means carried atopposed sides of said supporting member having hinge axes laterally spaced from and parallel to each other and respectively disposed in ,a horizontal plane spaced above said abutment shoulders, a pair of cover members having inner and outer sides and hingedly con.- nected at their lower edge portions :to said hinge means of said supporting member at opposed sides thereof, said cover member in the closed position ,of the device extending upwardly with their inner sides in face-to-face relation at op posed sides of said article, and in open position ex ending downwardly with their outer sides in baek-to-back relation toconstitute a manipulating handle for said article, said base portion being interposed between said open cover members with its abutment shoulders respectively engaged by 1116. 1 O.u;ter sides .at .points .below their hinge axes.

A combination container and handle device comprising a supporting member comprised of a base provided with outwardly projecting shoulders at opposed sides, a pair of spaced longitudinal walls inwardly offset from said shoulders and extending upwardly therefrom and providing in the space between them an article receiving pocket to retain an article in upwardly projecting relation thereto, and a pair of upstanding ear portions, one at each end of said base, each having a pair of bearing portions projecting respectively outwardly beyond said walls, and the bearing portions at the respective opposed sides of said walls having their member, said cover members in the closed position of the device extending upwardly with their inner sides in face-to-face relation at opposed sides of said article, and in open position extending downwardly with their outer sides in back-to-back relation and engaged with said shoulders to constitute a manipulating handle for said article.
