- My present invention relates to a mechanically operated shaver, more particularly to one which may be readily cleaned.
One of the principal objects of thisy invention is to provide a shaver of this class having shaving or shearing means at one end and means at said end for covering opposite sides of the hairreceiving receptacle, and in which such receptacle may be readily uncovered bythe fingers of the hand gripping the shaver for blowing out or otherwise removing the hair in the receptacle.
Another important object of this invention is to provide shaving or shearing means at one end of the shaver, which means are provided with openings at the opposite sides thereof which are normally covered by clappers or gates which are hinged so that they are tiltable outwardly by the fingers for uncovering 4said'openings of the shaving means.
An important object of this invention` also is to provide a novel mounting for suchgates wherebythey may be readily and resilientlyheld in closed or open positions.
A further important object of this invention is to provide a novel and relatively simple unit of such cleaning gates and retaining springs which may be readily applied and secured to the head of the shaver.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, I have devised a shaver of this class having certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and portions, as will be hereinafter described in detail, and particularly set forth in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this application, in which:

Fig. 5 is a sectional elevational view thereof, taken through 5-5 of Fig. 4, showing by dotted lines various shifted or open positions of one of the cleaning gates;

f My razor or shaver, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, issimilar in appearance to electric shavers now in use. It is constructed or enclosed in a casing l, which serves as a hand grip and as the frame for the shaver. It is relatively wide at its head end, and at this end is located the shaving means, which consists of an outer shear member 2 and an inner shear member 3. Both shear members are channel shaped, that is, U-shaped in cross-section, as shownin Fig.5, the shear member 3 tting within the channel of the outer shear member 2. The opposed side flanges 2a of the shear member 2 fit within 'a channel Ib at the head end of the frame, as shown bestin Figs. 2 and 5. Within and at the inner portion of the outer shear member 2 is mounted a bridge or reinforcing member 4. This member 4 may be of inverted channel-shaped cross-section with the flanges thereof secured to the inner portions of the anges 2a of the outer shear member. The inner shear member 3 is located above the bridge 4. The inner side of the connecting portion 2b at the outer end of the outer shear member 2 is engaged by the corresponding connecting portion 3b at the outer end of the inner shear member 3, forming the shearing means for the shaver.
The shaving head described above has secured at its ends brackets 5 which close the ends of the outer shear member 2. These brackets extend downwardly into slots IG at the edge portions of the frame, as shown in Fig. 2, and locate the shaving head with respect to the' frame. The shaving head may be secured in position at the end of the frame by screws 6, shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
The inner shear member 3 is longitudinally reciprocated within the outer shear member 2, through an opening in the median portion of the bridge 4, by operating means not shown but illustrated and described in my patent number 2,519,332, dated August 15, 1950.
The opposite sides or anges 2a and 3a of the shear members 2 and 3 are provided with large openings 2 and 3c, respectively, these openings being of considerable lateral extent, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and the openings 2C and 3c in the respective flanges substantially registering with each other so that hair or bristles cut by the shear members may drop or be blown from the pocket within the inner shear member.
A't the outer sides of the shaving head are mounted cleaning gates 1 in the form. of clappers, the gates being normally positioned against the outer sides of the flanges of the shear member 2 over the openings 2. These gates are pivoted or hinged in V-shaped portions 8 of a spring mem- -ber 8. The pivoted portions Ia of the gates I are relatively' narrow in lateral extent, asl shown in Fig. 4. To the pivot portions 'Ia of the gates are secured handle portions 1b, in the form of loops, which extend outwardly from the gate portions of the gates and also beyond the contour. of thel frame l, as shown in Fig. 2. The handlel portions 7b, which are of the same lateral extent as the pivot portions 1a, extend outwardly through ver-I tical slots ld at the sides and intermediate the edges of the frame, the slots Id being of sulllci'ent' depth to allow the handle portion 'lb to be shifted downwardly, as indicated in Fig. 5. The spring means has spaced vertical legs 8P' at the opposite sides, the upper ends of said legs. The lower ends ofthe legs having the V-shaped portions a are supported by a substantially channel shaped member 8 which fits between the flanges of the bridge 4 at the opposite sides of the central hole 8'd through which the shaver mechanism, above referred to, extends. The cross portions' 8e of the channel shaped member 8 are secured in position to the under or inner side of the bridge 4 `by means of ears 4a, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The spring means is located laterally with respect to the shaving head by means of a slot 2d at the lower edges of the flanges' 2% of the outer shear member. In this manner the whole unit may beV readily secured in position to the shaving head of the shaver.
The portions 8a at the upper ends of the legs 8b are angular in shape, as shown in Fig. 7, and the pivot portion la of the gate 'l is of flat construction. When the gate is closed the at pivot portion engages the lower element 8f of the portion 8a in order to resiliently hold the gate in a' closed position. When the gate is open to its extreme position, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 5, the at pivot portion 'la engages the upper inclined element 8g of the portion l!a in order resiliently to hold the gate in an open position. Thus, the gate may be readily held, by the same spring means, in either closed or open position.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited. to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
I claim:
In a shaver of the class described, a frame having! a hollow shear member at one end transversely of the frame, a, second hollow shear member movably mounted within the first shear member',l both shear members having registering openings at the opposite sides thereof, a spring member secured to the lower portion of the shear members and having pairs of laterally spaced spring arms extending upwardly from the lower portion of the outer shear member to the outer sides thereof, the upper ends of the arms having angularportions, gates, one pivotally mounted at its' lower portion between the arms of each pair vand in the .angular portions thereof', in such a manner as normally to close the openings, and means' at the lower portions and outwardly froml the pivotal axes thereof to facilitate tilting the gates outwardly to uncover the openings.
