This invention has to do with shutters,
designed particularly for use as a storm shutter fdr protecting windows or other glazed openings,
Itis necessary, inshutters of this type, that they be adapted for prompt installation in event, of sudden storms. Further, the construction must bib *such that, when erected, the shutter, be so mfeunted-and-coupled as to prevent displacement under wind pressure. In the form shown in Figure'6 the .invention is adapted to a ledgeless window. As here, shown,
the foot is made up of the member 21 secured to the vertical wall of the building, to which member 21 a second member'28 is secured, so as toform a shutter-receiving channel between the wall and the member 28. The header, in this form may be similar'to that shown in Figures 3 and '4 and hereinbefore described.
' As' developed in Figures 7 and 8, the invention is designed for deep'or inset' and ledgeless windows. In this form the shutter-receiving channel is formed between thevvinclow frame 29 and a member of substantially inverted L-shape, the lower limb 30 of which is secured directly to the wall of-the building and the upper limb 3| of which isinclined inwardly and forms, with the window frame 29a channel for the shutters 20.
In this form the header is mounted on the underside of the opening so as to meet the requirements of the deep' windo-w opening. Preferably, this form of header will have downwardly projecting member 32 of some length to bear against the shutters 20' with yielding pressure and hold them'in place, the inner member of the header lying in closerelation to' the window frame.
The closures for doorways 12 are shown in Figures lz and 13. Frames 33 are'provided about the door openingand transom secured to the building walL' The door and transom will be hung in the usual or any suitable fashion from frames 33. Above thetransom a header 34 of the type hereinbefore described will be secured to the building wallgto receive the upper end of a plate 35 which will be secured by bolts or equivalent fastening means to the frame 33 to cover thetransom. At the lintel 36 of the door will be provided a foot 31 having a horizontal memher to support'the plate 35. With this construetion plate 35'can' be readily engaged with the header 34 and slipped'intgposition on the foot 3].. The door fits below the foot 31 and above 4 a threshold 39 and is covered by a plate 40, which plate is held in place by bars 4| bolted or otherwise secured at their ends by fastening means 42 to the frame 33 and also bolted at 43 to the cover plate 40. This construction provides a readily installed closure for the doorway.
The invention as herein disclosed provides a secure, continuous shutter for windows and doors, which can be quickly installed and removed without the need of skilled labor, and which, when not in use, can be conveniently stored in a small storage space.
, Such changes from the particular construction here shown as involve only the exercise of mechanical skill and are comprehended by the appended claims may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A demountable shutter structure of the class described including a fixed channeled foot, a spaced channeled header in alignment with said foot, a plurality of independently insertable and separately removable shutter members slidablyl' mounted in said foot and header, each of said shutter members having a substantially V-' shaped groove at one end and an angularly disposed flat inclined lip at its opposite end, each;
arranged to be detachably connected to a wallof a building, to facilitate installing and removing of the shutter members separately.
