CLOTHES HANGER Filed Feb. 27, 1948 Fig. 3.
4 Raymond F. Price INVENTOR.
BY ME/mi Patented Sept. 11, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLOTHES HANGER Raymond F. Price, Tucson, Ariz.
Application February 2'7, 1948, Serial No. 11,400
Claims. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hangers and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a hanger including a pair of slidable and extendable arms which are selectively positioned for engaging clothes or the like of various sizes.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable clothes hanger including a pair of slidable garment supporting arms and novel and improved means for lockably retaining the arms in an extended position relative to each other.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a garment hanger so designed as to facilitate the same to be quickly and readily adjustable for engaging various sizes of garments and which may be conveniently assembled to form a very small and compact article facilitating the transporting or shipping of the same in suit cases or other relatively small containers.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide an adjustable clothes hanger that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended. I
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which;
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the clothes hanger constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 2-2 of Fi ure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 44 of Figure 1; and,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the lower portion of the support engaging member used in conjunction with the present invention, and showing the manner in which the garment supporting arms are retained in a locked position thereto.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral I0 represents a support engaging member generally, comprising a hook element 12 that is rotatably carried by the joined or integral inner ends 14 of a pair of oppositely disposed, arcuate hanger arms l6. The outer ends I8 of these hanger arms iii are rigidly secured to or form an integral part Of a substantially rectangular, horizontally disposed locking bar or rail 20, the lower face 22 of which is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced transversely disposed notches or recesses 24, for a purpose which will later be more fully apparent.
Spaced parallel to the rail or locking bar 20,
' is a further substantially rectangular rail or brackets 28 are turned inwardly and fixed to the I lower face of the rail 26 by further rivets or the like 34.
Slidably positioned between the rails 20 and 26, is a pair of extendable garment supporting arms 36 and 38, the inner ends 40 and 42 of which receive outwardly extending headed fasteners 44 that slidably engage the central cutouts or notches 46 in substantially rectangular locking plates 48 having notch engaging edges 50.
Embracing the rails 20 and 26 is a pair of substantially U-shaped guide bands 52 and 54, the ends 56 and 58 of which are turned inwardly to fixedly engage rivets 60 for securing the same to the arms 36 and 38. To further retain the rails 20 and 26 spaced parallel to each other, there is provided a split substantially rectangular band 62 the ends of which are fixed to the rail 26. This latest band 62 limits the inward sliding movement of the arms 36 and 38 relative to each other.
In practical use of the present hanger, the guides 52 and 54 are pushed outwardly until the arms 36 and 38 are extended to a selected position relative to each other, whereby the plates '48 are pushed upwardly so that the edges 56 thereof will frictionally engage selected notches 24 in the rail 20.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A clothes hanger comprising a support engaging member including a substantially horizontally disposed rail, a further rail spaced relative to the first mentioned rail, means connecting and spacing the rails relative to each other, a pair of extendable support arms slidably positioned between the rails, and means carried by the arms for engaging one of the rails to lock the arms in a selected extended position relative to the rails.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said locking means includes locking plates, one of which is slidably carried by each of said support arms, and a plurality of longitudinally spaced transverse notches provided in the first mentioned rail for selectively receiving the locking plates.
3. A clothes hanger comprising upper and lower spaced rails, channel brackets connecting and spacing said rails relative to each other, a pair of extendable support arms slidably mounted between said rails and slidably received by said channel brackets, slidable locking plates carried by said arms and having straight edges, and a plurality of longitudinally spaced transverse notches provided in the inner face of one of said rails adapted to selectively receive the straight edges of said locking plates.
4. A clothes hanger comprising upper and lower spaced parallel rails, said upper rail including a lower flat face having a plurality of spaced parallel transverse notches therein, a pair of arms slidably received between the rails and having inner ends, and a locking plate slidably carried by the inner end of each arm for entering selected notches in said upper rail.
5. The combination of claim 4 wherein said locking plates each include an upper straight edge of entering the notches to retain the arms adjusted relative to each other, and said plates each having a central cut-out, fasteners extending through the cut-outs and into the inner ends of said arms and slidably supporting said plates.
