This invention relates to a portable tree tapping machine.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a portable tree tapping machine which can be easily carried by the user and supported by harness extended over the shoulder and of such length as to allow the machine to be brought to a location in front of the user so that pressure can be brought upon the machine by the abdomen of the user when effecting the tree tapping operation.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a tree tapping machine adapted to be carried by the user which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the portable tapping machine embodying the features of the present invention mounted upon the user at a location in readiness for use,
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the tree tapping machine,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the machine free of the harness used for suspending the same from the user,
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of a chuck with a drill therein. 7
Referring now to the figures, l represents a base on which is mounted a gas engine ll having the usual fixtures thereon. This gas engine has an output shaft I2, with a starting pulley I2 thereon, to which may be connected a sleeve l3 for retaining a wood bit [4 by setting a screw 13 therein. The base extends for a considerable width across the front of the body of the user I5. The wood bit is fixed to the sleeve l3 by set screw I 4'.
At the ends of the base ID are hand holes l6 through which the hands of the user can be extended to steady the base and the machine while the drilling operation is being effected. The bit 14 will be brought to the tree and the engine which has already been started will cause the rotation of the drill and by the position of a plate I! extending upwardly from the rear of the base and adapted to rest against the abdomen of the user l5, pressure can be applied to feed the bit 14 into the tree being tapped. The plate I! need not extend the full width of the base H but only sufliciently as to provide sufficient area across the abdomen of the user. L-shaped brackets are secured to the base and plate to retain the two in rigid relation to each other.
Connected to the brackets 30 on the base are eyes I8 to which snap hooks 19 of a harness strap 2| can be connected. An adjusting buckle 22 is provided on the harness 2!. There may be two of these straps 2|, one for each shoulder and at the back of the user the straps are connected together by a bridging or tie strap 23.
In Fig. 4, is shown a drill chuck 25 which has a shank 26 with a sleeve portion 2'! adapted to be fixed by a set screw 28 to shaft [2. A drill 29 may be fixed in chuck 25 by turning the chuck.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
Iclaim:
A portable tree tapping machine comprising a base, a rotary machine mounted on the base and having an output shaft extending to the front thereof, a drill bit attached to the output shaft, L-shaped brackets fixed to said base adjacent to the opposite ends thereof, eye hooks fixed to said brackets, straps connected to the eye hooks at the opposite ends of the base adapted to be extended over the shoulders of the user, and said base is provided with elongated openings outwardly of the brackets to form hand grasping portions on the base for steadying the base while the tapping operation is being effected, and a vertically-extending pressure plate connected to the base and to the bracket and extending upwardly therefrom and adapted to rest against the abdomen of the user and by which pressure can be brought against the machine and the drill to urge the latter into the tree.
