UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETEE` EoEc., E SoMEEviLLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
ADJUSTABLE SPRING-BOLT.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 256,559, dated April 18,1882. Application tiled March 29, 1881. Renewed November 4, 188i. `(Model.)
To all whom t'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, PETER FORG, of Somerville, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Catches, of which the following descriptiomin connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to catches for wardrobe and other doors, and for general cabinet and carpentry work; and it'consists essentially of a case having within it a spring-supported screw-threaded stud provided with 'an'adjustablebolt, substantiallyashereinafterdescribed, whereby the extent of the protrusion of the bolt beyond the case may be regulated at will.
Figure l represents in front elevation a pair of doors supposed to form part of awash-stand, the wood-work being somewhat broken out .to show the catch and striking-plate. a detail of the striking-plate. l Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the bolt-case, bolt, and spring, the studbcing shown in elevation. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the catch, and Fig. 5 represents a device for adjusting the bolt upon the stud.
In the drawings, a c represent a pair of doors of, say, a wash-stand, only a part of which is shown, the said doors being hinged, so as to be opened or closed. In this instance of my invention the striking-plate b isconnected with the upper endof the door a, and the catch is shown as inserted in a horizontal cross-stripV the case, having a head, d', and the spring e and adjustable bolt f, secured'upon the said stud, the bolt having one or more grooves or openings, g, or it may be shoulders, to receive the points h 0f a device, t', resembling a fork,
Eig. 2 is.
as shown in Fig. 5. The case c will preferably be formed by drawing a tube ot metal and tlanging it, as at c', the case being made round in order that it may be readily and quickly inserted into a hole made by an auger. The stud d is free to move longitudinally in case c as the conical outer end of the bolt f hits the strik ing-plate b, the spring e being then compressed and the llanged head d' of the stud moving backward away from the inner end of the case.
When the door ot is closed more or less power will have to be applied to the knob m to open the door, the `power depending entirely upon the stiffness of the spring e, which acts upon the boltf.
By adjusting the boltf out and in upon the screw-threaded portion ot' the stud d more or less of the power of the spring e can beutilized to keep the conical end of the bolt pressed into the hole b2 of the striking-plate b,and this adjustment of the bolt, iu accordance with my invention, may be quickly and easily made from the outer end ofthe bolt by the device i, the prongs of which may be inserted into the opening g, to turn the bolt and screw it oft or on the stud d,vvhilc the square or other irregular surface of the latter near its head is prevented from turning in the case.
I do not broadly claim a beveled bolt pressed or held outwardly by a spring to hold a door closed until by strain ou the door the force ot the spring is overcome. Y
I claimp As an improved article ot' manufacture, the herein-described catch, composed of the ease, the spiral spring, and the screw-threaded stud, extended loosely in the said case and provided with the boltf, made adjustable longitudinally thereon, all substantially as set forth.
1n testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER FORG.
Witnesses G. W. GREGORY, ARTHUR REYNoLDs.
