Application January 10, 1949, Serial No. 70,115 aonims. (o1. azi-33.36)
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in auxiliary seats for velocipedes, and more particularly to a seat for holding a doll on the handle bars of a tricycle or similar velocipede used by children.
An important object of the invention is to provide a basket-like carrier to be used as a seat and including a wire frame having hooks for supporting the same from the handle bars of the velocipede and an adjustable brace or prop to hold the seat in a horizontal position in front of the steering post for the handle bars and whereby the seat may be adjusted in accordance with variations in the handle bar construction of different makes of velocipedes.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, which may be easily and quickly placed in position on the velocipede without necessitating any changes or alterations in the construction thereof, and which is otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the seat removed from the velocipede;
Figure 2 is a side elevational View showing the seat supported on the handle bars of a tricycle;
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view;
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the wire frame for the seat; and
Figure 5 is a plan view of the fabric lining for the frame.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein, for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a wire frame of substantially cubical shape and provided at its upper, rear corner with hooks 6.
A fabric lining 'I is constructed substantially in the shape of a cross to provide a front panel I3, rear panel 9 and side panels I0, the outer edges of which being formed with casings II for attaching to the upper rails of the frame 5 so that the central portion I2 of the lining forms a seat. Leg openings Ill are formed in the front panel Il.
A substantially U-shaped brace or prop I4 is bent outwardly at its ends in opposite directions to provide arms I5 formed with eyes I6 at their outer ends which are slidably mounted on the lower side rails II of the frame 5 and with the brace or prop I4 extending in a rearward direction under the lower rear rail I8 of the frame. The sides of the brace or prop I4 are formed with notches I3 to receive the rail I8 for securing the brace or prop in a slidably adjusted position on the side rails Il'. A bar 20 is supported at the lower rear corners of the frame 5 in a parallel position below the rail I8 to prevent the brace or prop I4 from dropping downwardly when the notches are disengaged from the rail I8.
The rear end of the brace or prop I4 is curved forwardly to form a seat 2l for the prop.
In the use of the invention, the hooks 6 are placed over the handle bars 22 of a velocipede, such as a tricycle designated at 23, and with the seat 2I at the rear end of brace or prop I4 bearing against the steering column or housing 24 for the handle bars to thus support the frame 5 in a horizontal position forwardly of the handle bars, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The device is designed primarily for use an an auxiliary seat for holding a doll on a childs velocipede, but it will be appreciated that the frame 5 and lining 'I may b-e constructed of a suitable size for use as an auxiliary seat for children on regulation-size bicycles, or as a basket or carrier for other purposes.
In view of the `foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the :appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A carrier for velocipedes of a type including a pair of handle bars and a steering post, said carrier comprising a basket-like frame, hooks carried by the upper rear portion of the frame for engaging the handle bars, a fabric lining for the frame, and a substantially U-/ shaped brace slidably adjusted on the lower side portions of theframe to hold the frame forwardly of the steering post and holding the frame from twisting movement.
2. A carrier for velocipedes of a type including megeve a pair of handle bars and a steering post, said carrier comprising a basket-like frame, hooks carried by the upper rear portion of the frame for engaging the handle bars, a fabric lining for the frame having leg openings to form a seat, a substantially U-shaped brace having slides at its ends slidably mounted on the lower side portions of the frame, said brace including spaced apart substantially parallel sides projecting rearwardly from the frame to hold the frame forwardly of the steering post, and adjustable interlocking means between the sides of the brace and a part of the frame to` hold the brace in slidably adjusted position thereon and holding the frame from twisting movement.
3. A carrier for velocipedes of a type including a pair of handle bars and a steering post, said carrier comprising a basket-like frame, hooks carried by the upper rear portion of the frame for engaging the handle bars, a fabric lining for the frame having leg openings to form a seat, a substantially U-shaped wire brace having slides at its ends slidably mounted on the lower side portions of the frame, said brace in@ cluding spaced apart substantially parallel sides projecting rearwardly from the frame to hold the frame forwardly of the steering post, and notches in the sides of the brace selectively engaging a part of the frame to hold the brace in slidably adjusted position thereon and holding the frame from twisting movement.
