Description

(No Model.) I R. F. JONES.
STEP LADDER. V .No; 256,327. I Patented Apr. 11;18 8 2.
UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
RUSSELL F. JONES, OF FORESTVILLE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM E. POWERS, OF SAME PLACE.
STEP-LADDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,327, dated April 11, 1882.
Application filed January 16, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUssELL F. JoNEs, of
- Forestville, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Step-Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to produce a step ladder which is light, strong, and simple in construction, and which can be readily adjusted for use; and my invention consists of the peculiar means whereby the brace is adjusted which connects the main. body of the step-ladder with the hinged standard, as will be hereinafter fully described. Y 1
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear view, and Fig. 2 a vertical section, of a step-ladder provided with my improvement. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, and Fig. 4a rear elevation, of the brace-adjusting device.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the main body of the step-ladder, composed of curved side pieces, a, and steps b, constructed in any suitable and wellknown manner.
0 represents the standard, which is hinged with its upper end-to the body A at c.
D is the brace, which forms an adjustable connection between the body of the ladder and the standard. The brace D is pivoted with one end to the body A at d, and has its opposite end constructed with a longitudinal slot, 0, which is made of sufiicient length to permit of the requisite adjustment of the brace.
. f represents a horizontal bolt, which projects 3 5 through the slot e of the brace, and which is formed at or secured to the upper end of a. bracket, F. The latter is secured to a. crosspiece, 9, which connects the side pieces of the standard, 0. 0
.h represents a thumb-nut applied to the threaded end ofthe bolt, and bearing against the side of the slotted portion of the brace. The inner side of the thumb-nut is preferably enlarged, as shown, to serve as a washer and form a broad bearing-surface, which comes in contact with the slotted brace. Upon loosening the thumb-nut h the brace D can be moved on the bolt f, whereby the inclination of the standard is'adjusted as mayberequired. -When 0 the standard has been so adjusted it is secured in the desired position by simply tightening the thumb-screw.
I claim as my invention- In a step-ladder, the combination, with the body A and hinged standard O, of a brace connecting the body A and standard 0, hinged at one end, and provided at its opposite end with a longitudinal slot, 6, a bracket, F, provided with ahorizontal bolt, f, upon which the slotted end of the hinged brace slides, and a thumbnut, h, whereby the brace is secured in place, substantially as set forth.
R. F. JONES.
