SHAGKLB.
Patented Apr. L1,1882.
IVENTOR: y
w/h i n, BY
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. TRAGKWELL, OF SKOO'KUMGHUOK, WASHINGTON TERRITORY.
SHACKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,079, dated April 4, 1882,
Application filed October 6, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it-known that I, JAMES MASON TRACK- Y WELL, ot' Skookumchuck, in the county of Lewis, Washington Territory, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Shackles,
of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act specilication.
Reference is to be had to the aceompanyin g drawings, forming part of this specification,
1o in which similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the igures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement, shown as unlocked. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, shown as locked and with the key ready to be inserted in the hole. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the lock and a side elevation of the key, showing the position ofthe key when unlocking the lock. Fig. 4 is a plan view, partly in section,
the lock being removed.
The object of this invention is to promote convenience in applying and removing shackles and security in their use.
The body of the shackle is made in two halfring parts, A B, as shown in Fig. 4. Upon one end of the part A is formed an outward projection, C, having a lug or eye, D, at its outer end to receive a chain when two shackles are to be connected. In the inner end ot' the projection C is. formed an aperture or socket to receive a lug, E, formed upon the corresponding end of the other part, B. Upon the other ends ot the parts A B are formed lugs F G, which have notches or shoulders H in their edges for the springcatches I of the lock J to engage with, as shownv in Fig. 2, and rabbets in their adjacent sides to receive the forward end of the key. In the edges of the ends of the parts A B, at the bases of the lugs F G, are formed dovetailed recesses K to receive the dovetailed projecting inner ends, L, of the top and bottom of the lock J. At the upper and lower sides of the outer part of the cavity of the lock J are secured the bases ot' the spring-catches I, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
With this construction the shackle is applied by bringing the parts A B together, in-
serting the lug E in the socket C, and pressing 5o the lock J into place upon the lugs F G, when of the shackle, shown with its parts separated,
the spring-catches l will engage with the said lugs F G, locking the shackle.
The key is made in two parts, M N, which are pivoted to each other at a little distance from their forward ends. The forward parts or blades ofthe parts M N of the key are made thin and have square hooks or shoulders O P formed upon them, which project in opposite directions, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. With this construction, when the blades of the key 6o M N have been brought into positions parallel with each other, by adjusting the handles ofthe said key the said blades are passed into a narrow key-hole inthe outer end of the lock J, and into the space between the rabbeted adjacent sides ot' the lugsl G. Then by pressing the handles of the key toward each other the hooks or shoulders O P are projected, as shown in Fig. 3,- so as to press the springcatches I outward and release the lugs F G; 7o then by pulling the said key outward the lock J will be withdrawn `from the said lugs F G, allowing the parts A B of the shackle tobe separated. v
Having thus fully described my invention, I 7 5 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A shackle constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of the half-ring parts A B, having socket O 8o and lug E at one end, and notched lugs F G at the other end, and the lock J, having interior spring-catches, I, as set forth.
2. In a shackle, the combination, with the ends ofthe half-ring parts A B, having notched parallel lugs F G, of the lock J, having end apertures and interior spring-catches, I, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said parts are secured against lateral and longitudinal separation, as set forth. 9o
3. In a shackle, the combination, with the lock having spring-catches I I, of the crosspivoted levers M N, having the reverse hooks O P at their ends, whereby these hooks may be pressed apart and upwardly against the catches, for the purpose specified.
JAMES MASON TRACKWELL.
