Filed July '7, 1950 Patented July 10, 1951 BRUSH HOLDER AND SCRAPER ATTACH- MENT FOR PAINT CANS Joseph L. Kosorok, Red Lodge, Mont. Application July 7', 1950, Serial Ni). 172,499
Claims. (01. 22090) My invention relates to paint brush holders and has for its primary object the provision of a device for this purpose which maybe readily attached to and removed from a conventional paint can.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a device which may be utilized in conjunction with paint cans which vary, within limits, in diameter and size.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a device of the class described which is provided with a wiping plate, the wiping surfaces of which are spaced radially inwardly from the sides of the peripheral edge portion of the opening of the paint can, whereby all of the paint removed from the brush by wiping engagement will drip directly back into the pail.
Another important object of my invention is the provision of a brush holder, the paint brushengaging jaws of which may be readily moved from a position overlying the opening in the paint can to an inoperative position remote therefrom.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a device which may be inexpensively produced, which is rugged in construction and durable in use, and which will occupy but a minimum of space when packed for storage or shipment.
The above and still further objects of my' invention will become apparent from the following detailed specification, appended claims, and attached drawings.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views:
. Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of my novel device secured to a paint can;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the structure of Fig. l, on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in end elevation, as seen from the right of Fig. 1 and on a reduced scale; and
Fig. 4 is a view in section taken on the line 4--4 of Fig. 2.
Referring with greater particularity to the drawings, a paint can A of conventional manufacture and size is provided with a cover-receiving opening B at its upper end and a marginal flange C, which projects radially inwardly from the circular side wall D.
According to my invention, I provide a pair of preferably segmental clamping members I and 2 which are adapted to be frictionally retained against the side wall D of the paint can A in opposed relationship by means of coil tension springs 3 which have their opposite ends securely anchored in openings 4 in adjacent side edges of the clamping members I and 2.
Preferably and as shown, the clamping members l and 2 are retained in position, whereby their upper end portions 5 project upwardly from the flange C at the upper end of the can A. Preferably and as shown, the opposite upper edge portions of the clamping members I and 2 are provided with upstandingears 6. Coiled tension springs I have one end securely anchored in the ears 6, as indicated at 8, and their opposite ends secured one each in apertures 9 injthe corner po-.- sitions ID of a wiper plate ll. As shown, the corner portions Hi are adapted to overlie the flange C at the upper end of the can A, preferably in spaced relation thereto, as shown particularly by Figs. 1-3 inclusive. Plate II is provided with a central opening 12, which is preferably rectangular in form so as to provide a plurality of straight wiper surfaces l3 which are spaced radially inwardly from the flange C for a purpose which will hereinafter become apparent.
An arm 14 has one end pivotally secured on a horizontal axis to the intermediate portion of clamping member I, as indicated at l5, for limited movements to and from the full and dotted line positions of Fig. 1. At its free end, arm I4 is provided with a brush-holding member is which comprises a pair of jaw-forming members I! and 18, each of which is notched adjacent its free outer end to provide a mouth [9. A coil tension spring 20 biases the jaws toward a position to frictionally grip the handle E of a paint brush. F, whereas the handles 2! on each of the jaws I1 and I8 facilitates manual spreading of the jaws to release the handle E of the brush F therefrom.
It will be noted that, when the arm is is moved to the operative position indicated by the dotted lines of Fig. 1, the brush F will be held in a vertical position over the openings [2 and B, whereby paint dripping from the bristles G will drop back into the can without waste. Furthermore, when it is deemed advisable to remove excess paint from the bristles G by wiping contact, this may be accomplished by causing same to engage the straight wiping surfaces l3 of the Wiper plate ll. Here again, in view of the fact that the wiping surfaces I3 are radially inwardly-disposed with respect to the flange C, all paint removed from the brush will drop back into the can A without waste.
My invention has been thoroughly tested and found to be completely satisfactory for the accomplishment of the above objects; and, while I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that the same is capable of modification without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a wiper plate having a central'opening therein and circumferential'ly-spaced peripheral portions which are adapted to overlie the upper marginal edge of an open top container, a pair of clamping members adapted to engage the sidewall of 'said container in opposed relation, yielding means connecting adjacent side edge portions of said clamping members whereby to cause frictional anchoring engagement between the said members and the wall of said container, yielding means connecting the upper portions of said anchoring members to said plate at circumferentially-spaced points about said container, an arm pivotally secured to one of said clamping members for limited swinging movements about a horizontal axis from an inoperative position adjacent the lower end of said container to an operative position wherein said arm projects above the level-of said plate, and a brush-holding member carried by the free end of said arm and adapted to overlie the opening in said plate when said arm is swung to its operative position.
' 2. The structure defined in claim 1 in which the central opening in said plate is provided with a straight brush-wiping edge.
3. In a device of the class described, a rectangular wiper plate having a central opening therein, the corners of said wiper plate adapted to overlie the marginal edge of an open-topped paint can, a pair of segmental clamping members, coil springs connecting the opposite upper end portions of each of said clamping members to adjacent corners of said wiper plate and positioning aid clamping members in diametrically opposed relationship on said container, coil tension springs connecting the adjacent side edges of said clamping members in a plane below the level of said wiper plate, an arm pivotally secured to one of said clamping members for limited swinging movements about a horizontal axis from an inoperative position adjacent the lower end of the container to an operative position wherein the arm projects above the level of said wiper plate, and a brush-holding member carried by the free end of said arm and adapted to overlie the opening in said Wiper plate when said arm is swung to its operative position.
4. The structure defined in claim 3 in which said central opening is provided with a plurality of straight wiper surfaces.
5. The structure defined in claim 3 in which said brush-holding member comprises a pair of clamping jaws and in further combination with yielding means biasing said jaws toward brush handle-engaging position.
