4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety razors and more particularly to means for reciprocating the blade during the shaving action.
An important object of the invention is to provide a reciprocably mounted blade holder and operated by a roller when moved over the surface of the skin to be shaved, the roller further easily and quickly removed and replaced without necessitating removal of the blade holder from the head of the razor.
Another object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efiicient and reliable in operation, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had "to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals ,refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 4 is a perspective View of the stationary head of the razor;
Figure 5 is a sectional View taken on Ya line "55 of Figure 3; and
Figure 6 is a perspective View of one of the latch members for the blade holder.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein, for Ythe l.purpose .of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the.inven tion, the numeral 5 designates a substantially rectangular shaped .head of the lrazor having a threaded opening 5 therein for threadedly oonnecting a handle 'I at the under side of the head.
A pair of arms 8 project forwardly from the front side edges of the head 5 and in which the reduced ends 9 of a longitudinally ribbed roller I0 are journaled for free rotation of the roller. Fach end of the roller I0 is formed with va cam I1 composed of multiple cam humps I2 extend- .ing radially with respect to the axis of the roller. .Spacing collars I3 are carried by the reduced ends or pins 9 and positioned between each cam I I and the adjacent arm 8 to space the'carnffrom the arm and to prevent endwise play of the roller.
A blade holder designated generally at `|11 is slidably supported on the head 5 for reciprocating :movement in a direction longitudinally lwith respect to the roller I0, the blade holder -comprising a lower plate I5 having upstanding :apertured ears yI6 at its rear side edges and .an upper clamping plate |35 superposed on Athe plate YI5 and having slots Il Aat its rear edge receiving the ears I6 and pivoted thereto for vertical swinging movement by pins I8.
The front edge of the lower plate I5 is formed with a forwardly projecting lip .I9 resting on the arms `8 and the front edge of the lower vplate I5 beneath the lip I9 is formed witha longitudinal slot 29 in which rearwardly projecting :pins 2| are slidably engaged, the pins being carried by lugs 22 rising from the front edge of the lhead V5.
The rear edge of plate I5 is also formed with -a longitudinally extending slot 23 in which a forwardly projecting tongue VZII of a pair of catches 25 are slidably engaged. The catches 25 are .pivotedto the under side of the .head 5 adjacent 4the rear corner thereof by pins 26 for horizontal swinging movement of the catches to engage vand disengage the tongue 24 with the slot 23 to lock the blade holder Iii-on the head 5.
A pair of pins 2l project forwardly from the front edge oi plate I5 of the blade holder I4 adjacent each side edge thereof and below vthe lip I9, the pins 2l being positioned inwardly of the Yarms 8 and are curved toward the arms, as shown more clearly in Figure 50i the drawings and are formed with forwardly projecting tapered ends seated vin the valleys of the cams II at each end of roller I5. The pins 2i are arranged so that when one pin is seated in oneof .the valleys of the cam at one end of the roller 9, Athe other'of said pins will be `riding von one of the humps I2 of the camnat the opposite end of the roller, whereby tofc'ause a reciprocating movement-of the blade holder I4 on the head 5.
The upper surface of lower plate I5 of the blade holder is curved transversely and formed with a longitudinally extending rib 28 for positioning assenso in the usual longitudinally extending opening 29 of a safety razor blade 30 to hold the blade in a position with its front cutting edge positioned longitudinally above the roller I0. The rib 28 is seated in a groove 3| at the under side of clamping plate I6 of the blade holder, when the clamping plate I6 is lowered into a position on the blade 30 and lower plate I5.
The rear edge of the clamping plate IS is formedwith a rearwardly projecting lip 32 for raising the clamping plate by downward pressure exerted thereon by the thumb or finger.
A locking plate 33 is pivoted at one end between the plates I5 and I6 by means of a pin 34 carried by the lower plate I5 adjacent one of the rear corners thereof, the plate having a lip 35 at its rear edge swingable into and out of position underlying the lip 32, the lips 32 and 35 being substantially coextensive. The free end of plate 33 is formed with a rearwardly inclined 4iinger grip 39 to facilitate movement of the plate 33 into and out of locking position under the lip 32. By swinging the locking plate 33 under the lip 32 of clamping plate I6, as shown by the full lines of Figure 3 of thedrawings, the clamping plate I3 is locked in its lowered position to clamp the blade 30 in the blade holder, and by swinging the locking plate 33 rearwardly from under the lip 32, and to one side of the latter, as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 3, the clamping plate I5 may be raised to remove the blade for cleaning or replacement.
In the operation of the`device, with the blade holder I 4 held on the head 5 for reciprocating movement by the pins 20 and tongues 24 of catches 25, the movement of the roller I0 over the surface of the skin to be shaved will cause a rotation of the roller and the cams I I at the ends of the roller will actuate pins 27 carried by the blade holder to rapidly reciprocate the blade dur- Ying the shaving action.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, vit is'believed that a clear understanding of `the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is, accordingly, deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the claimed as new is:
1. A safety razor comprising a head, a blade holder mounted for transverse sliding movement on the head and including upper and lower blade clamping plates hingedly connected to each other, a locking plate having wedging engagement between the plates at their hinged edges to lock the plates in closed position, and a traction roller journaled at the front edge of the head for rotation by a movement of the razor in a shaving action, said roller comprising a cam surface on each end, and a pin mounted on each end of said blade holder and engageable with said cam surface to reciprocate said blade holder upon rotation of said roller.
2. A safety razor comprising a head, a blade invention, what is holder mounted for sliding movement on the head and including upper and lower blade clamping plates hingedly connected to each other, a locking plate having Wedging engagement between the plates at their hinged edges to lock the plates in closed position, a traction roller journaled at the front edge of the head for rotation by a movement of the razor in a shaving action, said roller comprising a cam surface on each end, and a pin mounted on each end Vof said blade holder and engageable with said cam surface to reciprocate said blade holder upon rotation of said roller, said locking plate being swingably carried by the blade holder.
3. A safety razor comprisinga head, a blade holder mounted for sliding movement on the head and including upper and lower blade clamping `plates hingedly connected to each other, said upper plate having a. lip projecting from its hinged edge for manual manipulation to raise the upper plate, a locking plate swingably carried by the blade holder for wedging between the plates under the lip to lock the plates in closed position, and a roller having longitudinally extending ribs journaled at the front end of the head driven by a movement of the razor in a shaving action, and means comprising cam-actuated pins connecting the roller to the blade holder, said roller having cam surfaces at each end extending radially with respect to the longitudinal axis of said roller.
4. A safety razor comprising a head member, a handle operatively connected thereto, a pair of arms projecting forwardly from the front side edges of said head, a longitudinally ribbed roller journaled at its opposite ends in said arms, said roller having cam surfaces on each end, said cani surfaces comprising indentations extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of said roller, a blade holder mounted for movement parallel t0 the longitudinal axis of said roller, and means comprising a pin secured at each end of said blade holder and engaging said cam surfaces on said roller, said pins being arranged so that when one pin is seated in one of the valleys of the cam surfaces at one end of said roller the other of said pins will be riding on top of one of the hills of the cam surface at the opposite end of said roller, and a locking plate pivoted at one end to said blade holder and swingable into and out of locking position.
