This invention relates to apparatus employed in the manufacture of artificial silk filaments, thread, yarn and the like, hereinafter referred to as yarn, and relates more particularly to a yarn reel adapted to advance helices of yarn in an axial direction. The yarn may be subjected to a treatment with a fluid medium or mediums during the movement of the helices of yarn along the reel.
An object of this invention is the provision of an improved yarn advancing reel of the cantilever type characterized by its simplicity and strength of construction.
Another object of this invention is the provision of an improved yarn advancing reel embodying a plurality of bars which are angularly spaced with respect to each other, the angular spacing being fixed and'equal, and which bars are divided into two sets or cages adapted for interdigitating movement.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved yarn advancing reel in which the movement of the cages with respect to each other may be synchronized and advanced before the transfer of yarn is made, and in which the cages advance the yarn uniformly.
Other objects of this invention, together with certain details of construction and combinations of parts, will appear from the following detailed description.

Referring now to the drawings for a detailed description of my invention, the reel comprises a plurality of bars which are divided into equal sets to form two cages. The bars generally indicated by reference numeral 4 form one cage, and the bars generally indicated by reference 5 form the other cage. The bars 4 and 5 are supported, by means hereinafter set forth, on a single shaft 6 driven by any suitable means (not shown), which shaft rotates said bars. The shaft 6 is rotatably mounted in a bushing l and held therein by thrust bearings 8 and 9 and collar I l. A circular plate I2 is mounted on shaft 6 by means of a collar II for rotation therewith. The bushing 1, and thus the reel structure, is s pp rted y a flange [4 which is attached to rigid supportin means (not shown).
The 'plate I2 is provided with radial slots l5 equally spaced and extending circumferentially around said plate. Thereare sixteen slots in plate l2, one for each of the bars 4 and 5 shown in Figure 1. Behind each slot I5 is mounted a rectangular bearing housing It, which may be integral with plate l2. The bearing housing It is adapted to receive shafts ll arranged in cylindrical guide openings l9. The shafts are supported in said guide openings by linear motion ball bearings 19, shafts I! are mounted on' the platform 2| having integral therewith an angular extension 22, the purpose of which will hereinafter be set forth.
The means for giving the bars 4 and 5 the required in and out interdigitating movement comprises a stationary cam 21 integral with or fixed to hearing I and provided with a groove 28 in which ride cam followers 29. Cam followers 29 are rotatably mounted on brackets 3| fixed to or integral with platforms 2| on which bars 4 are carried. Cam followers 32 are rotatably mounted on brackets 33' which are fixed to or integral with platforms 2| which carry the bars 5. The cam followers 32 ride in groove 33 in cam 34 also fixed to or integral with bearings I. On rotation of shaft 5, the plate i2 is rotated, carrying with it bars 4 and 5 of the reel. The cam followers 29 and 32 riding in grooves 28 and 33 respectively in cams 21 and 34 respectively, impart the proper interdigitating movement to the bars 4 and 5. Referring to Figure 1, it will be seen that one set of bars, for example, bars 4, follows a circular path for 'of rotation and then withdraws uniformly towards the center of the reel, the extent of the withdrawal being as a rule about 1 The set comprising bars 5 moves exactly as the set comprising bars 4 but 180 out of phase. It is to be understood that the motion of bars 4 and 5 may be altered by changing the contour of grooves in the cams 21 and 34.
The sliders 23 of bars 4 are caused to advance uniformly by the following means: Each of the sliders of bars 4 is provided with a stub shaft 35 on which a cam follower 36 is rotatably mounted for contact with the edge 31 of cam 38 fixed to bushing I. The edge 3,! of the cam is so cut as to give a uniform advance to the sliders through from 180 to 300 of rotation of the bars about shaft 6. However, the movement of the sliders is preferably such that they advance from 225 to 275 of rotation and return through the other 135 to85 of rotation. The cam follower 36 is held against the edge 31 of digitating movement of the cages is positive; both the cam 38 by means of a compression spring 39 carried in a groove 4| in inner bar 24 and retained in position between a shoulder 42 on slider 23 and a lug 43 on inner bar 24. The sliders of bars 5 are caused to advance and return uniformly in a similar manner. Thus, each of the sliders of bars 5 is provided with a stub shaft 44 having rotatably mounted thereon a cam follower 45 adapted to contact edge 48 of cam 41 which is also fixed to bearing 1. The edge 46 is also cut so as to impart a uniform advance to the sliders of bars 5 through 225 to 275 of rotation of the reel about shaft 6 and the return of the sliders through the other 135 to 85 of rotation.
The motion of the advancing reel of this invention will now be explained with particular reference to Fig. 1. As the shaft 6 rotates, the

At the same time, the rotation of shaft 6 causes the cam followers 32 to ride in groove 33 of cam 34'thereby causing the bars 5 of the second cage to follow a perfectly circular path clockwise from point F- to point E, then to withdraw gradually and uniformly inward towards shaft 6 from point E to point H, the point of maximum withdrawal, and then gradually to move outwardly from point H to point F where they are fully extended.

Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A reel for advancing helices of yarn axially, comprising a rotatable shaft, a plurality of longitudinally extending bars for carrying the yarn along the reel rotatable with said shaft, means for supporting each of said bars including a plurality of reciprocable shafts operatively connected to eachvof said bars, a platform for supporting said reciprocable shafts and an extension from said platform to each of said bars, andcam meanslfor; reciprocating each of said bars individually. 1
. 2. A reel for advancing helices of yarn axially,

From point J to point I, the sliders return to their original positions ready for another advancing movement. This return of the sliders is made while the bars 4 are withdrawn away from the yarn. This motion of the sliders is' effected by the cam followers 36 running on the edge 3'! of cam 38. The sliders of bars 5 of the other cage begin advancing at point K before the bars 5 are fully extended and before the advance of the sliders of bars 4 of the other cage has stopped (at point J), and uniform advance of the sliders of the second cage, bars 5, continues around'to point L. Since the bars 5 withdraw from point E to point L, the advance of the sliders continues until the bars have moved inwardly and away from the yarn. From point L to point K, the sliders of bars 5 return to their original position ready for another advance. The motion of the sliders of bars 5 is effected by cam followers 45 running on the edge 46 of cam 41.

4. A reel for advancing helices of yarn axially, comprising a bushing, a rotatable shaft journaled in said bushing, a plate mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith, a plurality of spaced, angularly arranged housings on said plate, a plurality of reciprocable shafts mounted in each of said housings, a longitudinally extending bar for carrying the yarn along the reel fixed to said reciprocable shafts in each housing, a platform for supporting said reciprocable shafts in each housing, an extension from each platform to each bar, a cam follower attached to each platform and cam means cooperating with each cam follower for reciprocating each of said bars individually.
5. A reel for advancing helices of yarn axially, comprising a bushing, a rotatable shaft journaled in said bushing, a plate mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith, a plurality of spaced, angular- 'ly arranged housings on said plate, a plurality housings, ball bearings surrounding each of said shafts, a longitudinally extending bar for carrying the yarn along the reel fixed to said reciprocable shafts in each housing, a platform'for supporting said reciprocable shafts in each housing, an extension from each platform to each bar and means for reciprocating each of said bars individually.

A reel for advancing helices of yarn axially, comprising a bushing,' a rotatable shaft journaled in said bushing, a plate mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith, a plurality of spaced, angularly arranged housings on said plate, a plurality of reciprocable shafts mounted in each of said housings, ball bearings surrounding each of said shafts, a longitudinally extending bar for carrying the yarn along the reel fixed to said reciprocable shafts in each housing, a platform for supporting said reciprocable shafts in each housing, an extension from each platform to each bar, a cam follower attached to each platform and cam means cooperating with each cam follower for reciprocating each of said bars individually.

A reel for advancing helices of yarn axially, comprising a rotatable shaft, a plurality of longitudinally extending bars, for carrying the yarn along the reel rotatable with said shaft, said bars comprising an inner bar and a slider carried by said inner bar for movement relative thereto. means for supporting each of said bars including a plurality of reciprocable shafts operatively connected to each of said bars, a platform for supporting said reciprocable shafts and an extension from said platform to each of said bars, and means for reciprocating each of said bars individually.

comprising a rotatable shaft, a plurality of longitudinally extending bars for carrying the yarn along the reel rotatable with said shaft, said bars comprising an inner bar and a slider carried by said inner bar for movement relative thereto, means for supporting each of said bars including a plurality of reciprocable shafts operatively connected to each of said bars, anti-friction means surrounding said reciprocable shafts, a platform for supporting said reciprocable shafts and an extension from said platform to each of said bars, and means for reciprocating each of said bars individually.

A reel for advancing helices of yarn axially, comprising a bushing, a rotatable shaft journaled in said bushing, a plate mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith, a plurality of spaced, angularly arranged housings on said plate, a plurality of reciprocable shafts mounted in each of said housings, a longitudinally extending bar for carrying the yarn along the reel fixed to said reciprocable shafts in each housing, a platform for supporting said reciprocable shafts in each housing, an extension from each platform to each bar, said bars comprising an inner bar and a slider carried by said inner bar for movement relative thereto, a cam follower attached to each platform and cam means cooperating with each cam said shafts, a longitudinally extending bar for carrying the yarn along the reel fixed to said reciprocable shafts in each housing, a platform for supporting said reciprocable shafts in each housing, an extension from each platform to each bar, said bars comprising an inner bar and a slider carried by said inner bar for movement relative thereto, a cam follower attached to each platform and cam means for cooperating with each cam follower for reciprocating each of said bars individually.

A reel for advancing helices of yarn axially, comprising'a bushing, a rotatable shaft journaled in said bushing, a plate mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith, a plurality of spaced, angularly arranged housings on said plate, a plurality of reciprocable shafts mounted in each of said housings, a longitudinally extending bar for carrying the yarn along the reel fixed to said reciprocable shafts in each housing, a platform for supporting said reciprocable shafts in each housing, an extension from each platform to each bar, said bars forming two cages, the bars of which are interdigitated, means for reciprocating the bars of said cages individually, and means for longitudinally advancing the bars of each cage separately, the longitudinal movement of the bars of one cage being in synchronization with the longitudinal movement of the bars of the other cage.

A reel for advancing helices of yarn axially, comprising a, bushing, .a rotatable shaft journaled in said bushing, a plate mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith, a plurality of spaced angularly arranged housings on said plate, a plurality of reciprocable shafts mounted in each of said housings, ball bearings surrounding each of said shafts, a longitudinally extending bar for carrying the yarn along the reel fixed to said reciprocable shafts in each housing, a platform for supporting said reciprocable shafts in each housing, an extension from each platform to each bar, said bars forming two cages, the bars of which are interdigitated, means for reciprocating the bars of said cages individually, and means for longitudinally advancing the bars of each cage separately, the longitudinal movement of the bars of one cage being in synchronization with the longitudinal movement of the bars of the other cage. I

A reel for advancing helices of yarn axially, comprising a bushing, a rotatable shaft journaled in said bushing, a plate mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith, a plurality of spaced, angularly arranged housings on said plate, a plurality of reciprocable shafts mounted in each of said housings, a longitudinally extending bar for carrying the yarn along the-reel fixed to said shafts in each housing, said bars comprising an inner bar and a slider carried by said inner bar for movement relative thereto, means for reciprocating said shafts in said housings so as to cause the reciprocation of said bars individually, and separate means for reciprocating said sliders horizontally.

A reel for advancing helices of yarn axially, comprising a bushing, a rotatable shaft journaled in said bushing, a plate mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith, a plurality of spaced, angularly arranged housings on said plate, a plurality of reciprocable shafts mounted in each of said housings, ball bearings surrounding each of said reciprocable shafts, a longitudinally extending bar for carrying the yarn along the reel fixed to said shafts in each housing, said bars compris- 7 ing an inner bar and a slider carried by said inner bar for movement relatve thereto, means for reciprocating said shafts in said housings so to cause the reciprocation of said bars individually,
and separate means forrreciprocating said sliders horizontally. I

A reel for advancing helices of yarn axially, comprising a bushing, a rotatable shaft journaled in said bushing, a plate mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith, a plurality of spaced, angularly arranged housings on said plate, a plurality of reciprocable shafts mounted in each of said housings, ball bearings surrounding each of said reciprocable shafts, a longitudinally extending bar for carrying the yarn along the reel fixed to said shafts in each housing, said bars comprising an inner bar and a slider carried by said inner bar for movement relative thereto, cam means for reciprocating said shafts in said housings. so as EEFEEENcEs CITED I The following reierences are of record in the file of this patent:
