TOILET KIT Melvin H. rline, Chicago, Ill., assigner to Eisenman and Company, Chicago, Ill., a partnership Alpplioation June 2, 19%, Serial No. 30,654
(Cl. M30- 34) 4 Claims.
This invention relates to a toilet kit of the type used for carrying various toilet articles on a trip, and more particularly to a toilet kit having a pair of compartment sections hinged together so that they may be opened up like a book, and each of said sections having a hinged lid provided with releasable fastening means so that the articles in the respective sections will not spill out when the kit is opened up.
Among the objects of my invention are: to provide a novel and improved toilet kit; to provide a toilet kit having twin compartment sections that may be opened up like a book without spilling the contents of the sections; to provide a toilet kit having a novel construction of twin compartment sections and lids therefor; to provide a toilet kit having compartment sections each provided with a lid, and in which said' lids when closed form center partitions in the lsit when the kit is closed; to provide a toilet kit having a pair of receptacle-shaped compartment sections the sides and ends oi' which are formed of a plurality of layers, the outer layer of which constitutes a single integral piece of flexible material having a hinge portion integrally connected therewith; to provide a toilet kit having a pair of compartment sections hinged together, and strap-like means secured to the edges adjacent the hinge to form a handle and a strengthening reinforcement for the kit; to provide a toilet kit having a pair of hinged compartment sections, a stifening wire around the upper edges of each section and a novel connection of the side and end Walls of the sections with relation to said stiffening Wire; to provide a toilet kit having a one-piece double lid hinged at its central portion to the hinge between the compartment sections and having a novel arrangement of flaps for securing the central portion of the double lid to the section Walls adjacent the main hinge of the kit; to provide a pair of compartment sections hinged together and provided with novel means for detachably securing said sections together in closed position; and such further objects, advantages and capabilities, as will later more fully appear.
The invention is illustrated in a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view looking toward the hinged side of a toilet kit embodying my invention, and showing the kit in closed and fastened position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the toilet kit of Fig. 1, but showing the same open and with one lid raised.
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and showing only a fragmentary portion of the open lid.
Fig. Ll is a longitudinal vertical section on the line flof Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary horizontal section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
In the embodiment shown in the drawings for illustrative purposes, my toilet kit comprises generally a pair of compartment sections l and 2 hingedtogether at 3, and provided with a strap d serving as a combined handle and reinforcing strip.
As seen in Figs. l and 2 the upper edges of the outer side walls 5 and t, the end walls l, 8, 9 and I0 and a portion of the ends of the inner side walls Il and l2 have secured thereto slidefastener strips I3 and ill which, when the two compartment sections are closed together, may be fastened together by a slide-fastener I5, the latter preferably having a flexible extension It to enable easy operation thereof in fastening and unfastening the two compartment sections with relation to each other. Other forms of fastening means may be used as desired. Hingedly connected to the hinged portion of the compartment sections is a one-piece double lid having individual lids l'.' and each of these individual lids having in the middle portion of its free edge a short strip le and 2e of leather or fr the like having fixed therein one portion 2! and 22 of a fastening device such as a glove fastener or the like, the other half of which is fixed in a tab secured to the inner surface of the outer wall of the compartment sections as shown 23 an 2Q in Figs. 2 and 3.
Each of the side and end walls of the compartment sections is formed of a plurality of layers of material as will be understood in Figs. 3 and 4. In this connection it is important to note that the outer layer of each of the side walls 5, 6, Il and I2 and the end walls l, 8, 9 and if), and the hinge 3 are all formed of an integral single piece of leather or other suitable ornamental flexible material, the free ends of which integral strip are doubled back upon themselves at 25, 2S, 2l
and 28 and sewed together by stitching 2s and as seen in Figs. 4, 5 and 6. in other `words one portion of this single integral strip passes entirely around the outside of the side and end walls of the upper compartment section and another portion of this single integral strip passes entirely around the side and end walls of the lower compartment section, these two portions being integrally connected together at the rear edge of the kit to form the integral hinge 3 best understood in Fig. l.
The turned over ends and stitches iii-32) not Visible in l because of being hidden by the handle strap il, this stitching however ef;- tending from the bottom to the top of the rear 3 edge of the kit behind the strap e of Fig. l. By forming these parts of a single integral piece of leather or the like, greater strength, economy, and pleasing appearance are accomplished. The opposite' ends of the integral hinge strip 3 are folded inwardly upon themselves at 3l and 32, these turned over portions being either glued, stitched or otherwise secured to the main portion as desired. The width oi the rear hinge strip 3 is suiiiciently great to comfortably space the two compartment sections away from each other when they are opened up into the position shown in Fig. 3, as well as give suiiicient room for securing the longitudinal central portion of the double lid thereto.
As the outer side walls 5 and 6- and the end walls l', 8, 5 and lil or the compartment sections are of similar construction, a detailed description of only the side wall 5` shown in Fig. 3, and its connection with the adjacent portions, will be given for brevity, it being understoodthat this description applies also to the other side and end walls last referred to. They construction of the inner side walls il and l2 is somewhat dife ferent and will be described more fully later herein. Referring to side wall Ei it willy be seen that there is provided a reinforcing wire 33 which extends entirely around the upper edge of the compartment section 2 the meeting ends of which wire are welded or otherwise secured together to form a continuous reinforcing wire around said upper edge. A similar reinforcing wire 3Q is providedl inthe upper edge of the come partment section l. Bent over reinforcing wire 33 is a strip 35 of leather or other suitable flexible material, which after being bent around wire 33 extends downwardly therefrom in the/forni of a pair of parallel skirts 35 and 3l' which terrni-V nate a distance downwardly within the .sidewall These two skirts may be secured together or not asv desired'.
Extending downwardly along the inside ofthe inner skirt 3l is a strip 33' of textile or other suite' able flexible ornamental material which, at its upper inner edge5v has fixed thereto an overlap# pin'gportion 39; portion Se, strip :i3-'and .skirt 3l being secured together by stitching llil. Fixed upon the upper edge of the overlappingporticn 3l! is the slide-fastener strip it, it being understood that this fastener strip extends around three sides or" the upper edge of each compartment section and part way along the ends of the inner. side, as will be understood in Fig. 2. The inte'- gral outer leather strip oi the wall ill is stitched or otherwise secured at i to the outer skirt 3i?.
Also included in the stitching ilof the inner 3l is the lower edge of the' glove fastener' ear 23, which latter is also'further stitched at i2 to the upper portion of the :loop member 35- passing around the rein'iorcing wire 33, and to the overlapping portion 39.
The bottom of each of the compartment sec-g tions will now be described as applied lto conr-V partinent section 2, it being understood thatV the bottom of compartment section lI is of similar construction. rEhis bottoni sectionA comprises an outer layer o leather or the like doubled'back upon itself around-its marginal Aportion as shown at fifi in T"g. 3. Secured h, gluing or vother-wise desired, to the inner face of the outer Vlayer 4'3- is a layer iii of wadding or other soft,-material. Superirnposed on the wedding layer l5 is a layer 45 of chip board, cardboard, or other suitable stiiening material, which may be glued to the adjacent surface vof the wedding layer or not as f i desired. As seen in the lower left hand corner of Fig. 3 the bent over edges M of the outer layer 53, and the lower edges of the outer leather layer or" the side wall 6, and the inner flexible strip 38, and the' marginal edge oi the chip board layer dit, are sewed or otherwise secured together at it?, so as to iirmly connect the side walls with the bottom of the compartment section. Also positioned above the chip board layer lit is a sti ening layer it of cardboard or other suitable aterial, havin-g positioned thereabove a layer of textile material of ornamental appearance and fastened thereto around its edges by the stitching 5! or other suitable fastening means. The bottom of the stifening layer 18 may be glued or otherwise fixed tothe top of the chip board layer Lit, or this bottom member may' be secured in place in the bottom of the coi-npart nicht sectionl in any desired manner around the edges adjacent the stitching 5t, in order to hold the inside portion of the bottom in place in the co :ent section. The layer it and the Y.exible strip which are presented to View in the interior of the compartment sections will 1 be made of material of pleasing appearance, such as silk or the like, and will preferably be" waterprooied so as not to be damaged by the presn ence of a damp wash rag, shaving brush or other damp article that may be positioned in the compartment section.
lThe one-piece douole lid whichis made up to have the individual lids il and i8', is formed of continuous material indented at each end o'iitsv longitudinal center as will ble understood in Fig.`
2, and is composed' oi an upper 'ieet 5| and a lower sheet' 52' oi textile material of pleasing appearance and orefer'aoly waterl-prooied for rea sons' similar to those referred' to' above in' con# etion with strip Sii and bottom' sheet it'. y The and lower sheets Si 52 have intel posed therebetween, one for the lid il one for' the lid it, a layer 53 of chip board', card#Y board orother suitable sth-lening material'. Just beyond the inner e I ges oi stiiening sheets y 5t' the upper and lower sheets and @saresti/sched or ot'herwisesecur'ed together at 513 and 'fja-sv-w-ifl-l be best understoodin Fig. 3, these rows-of sti-teh@ occurring along the opposite edges of` the hinge str' 3; Eetween stitch-ingl Fifi and the upper portion and' the lower portion 5l of! thev upper and lower sheets Elv ,andV 52 have interfposed between there a stl-iieni-ng strip 5i" of material similar to that of the sheets 53'.
Also included in the stitch-ing and 55, and
below te lower por-.tion 5l of the central portion oi the ene-piece lid, is a sheet .t of textile material having the downwardly extending skirtsY 59 andill, the former being extended downwardly along the inner side oi the inner wall of com partrn'ent section 2 andthe latter being extended downwardlyalong the inner surface of the inner ywall of the compartment section i.. As seenC in Fig. 3 each of the downwardly extendingZ skirts 59 and BSv are extended at their bottom edge laterally between the sheets le and it of thebottom of the compartment section .asl indicated at 6l and 52 and rnay be glued', sewed, or otherwise Theorie-piece ,double lid` hasl secured around its edgesga bent =over strip Alltl so bent as to lap over both the top and bottom of the marginal edges of the lids and being secured thereto by stitching or the like 64. It is thus seen that I have provided a novel construction of lids for the compartment sections which may be swung as desired, and fastened in closed position by the snap fasteners on the tabs 21-24 in order to prevent the contents of the compartment sections being spilled when the kit is opened, and which lids may be readily opened when desired by releasing said snap fasteners. Aside from the addition of the inwardly extending skirts 59 and 60 the inner side walls of the compartment sections are of the same construction as the outer side and end walls described above in connection with, and shown in Fig. 3.
It is thus seen that I have provided a very attractive and useful twin toilet kit embodying a pair of compartment sections hinged together so that they may be closed and fastened and the kit conveniently carried around by the handle l with the lids closed and fastened, or the compartment sections opened up like a book and the lids unfastened and raised to open position, one at a time, to make available the fittings or articles being carried therein. It is also to be noted that when either of the opened lids is released it will automatically swing back to closed position because of the integral construction thereof. When the two compartment sections are swung together and locked by the slide fastener described above, or other suitable fastening means, the kit may be conveniently packed in a suitcase or other larger carrying case, or separately carried about by the handle li if desired. The present kitis made of material of pleasing appearance, so as to be attractive to the user, and is of such construction as to give great convenience in use. Also when the kit is closed the individual lids are laterally positioned apart a small distance which provides a middle space available for pockets, loops and the like to hold small ttings and into which space damp wash cloths or other articles of reasonable thinness may be positioned. The flexibility of the side and end walls of the compartment sections also in effect makes a toilet kit of the expansible and collapsible type, by virtue of which it may be more or less pressed inwardly to more readily accommodate it to the available space in a suitcase or the like in which it is necessary to push the suitcase lid downwardly when fastening the same.
