This invention relates to new and useful improvements in scribers and the primary object of v in the case and embodying novel and improved means for retaining the holding member in a longitudinally adjusted position relative to the case.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a piece of chalk radically diilerent in construction from chalk heretofore manufactured and uwhose conception when used in conjunction with the present holder being entirely new.

Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a chalk holder including a case and a chalk holding member that is quickly and readily moved up and down in the case to expose a chalk held by the member from the case whereby the chalk may be used for marking.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a chalk holder so constructed as to permit a chalk to be applied thereto or removed therefrom in a minimum time.

Another objectof the present invention is to provide a chalk holder and chalk, the chalk being of uniform thickness throughout and sufficiently thin to make fine lines on cloth and to eliminate the necessity of sharpening the chalk.

Another object of the present invention is to providev a chalk holder and dispenser so designed as to eliminate a vexing problem of constant sharpening of chalk and will thus save considerable tir'ne on the part of the user. vIt will prove more economical over the old type of chalk since practically all of the chalk is used up. Y. A further object of the present invention is to provide a chalk holderwherein the users fingers will not contact a chalk so that the chalk will remain substantially hard forcontinued use with minimum waste.

A still further aim of the present invention is the provision of a chalk holder and chalk therefor that are simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, small and compact in structure, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more .fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Referring now to the drawings in detail, Wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral ID represents an elongated casing having spaced side walls l2 and lll, an end Wall l5 and a discharge opening I8 at one end'for chalk.

A chalk-holding member 2Q is received in the casing lil for movement longitudinally of the casing and toward or away from the discharge opening I8. The chalk-holding member 20 is formed from a single blank of bendable material, such as tin, and includes a split sleeve 22, a plate 2li projecting `from one edge of the sleeve 22, and a retainer channel 26 projecting from the other edge of the sleeve and overlying the plate 24.

Means is provided for retaining the chalk-holding member 20 at a predetermined distance from the discharge opening i8. This means consists of a pair oi substantially L-shaped locking members having rst and second leg portions 28 and 3l). The leg portions 28 are slidably received in the ends of the sleeve`22 whereas the leg portions 3il are slidably received in longitudinal slots 32 in the wall l2.

The outer longitudinal edges of the slots 32 are provided with longitudinally spaced teeth 34 for receiving lugs or dogs 36 on the leg portions 30. A spring member 38 received in the sleeve 22 yieldingly bears against the leg portions 28 to urge the leg portions 28 from the sleeve 22 and the lugs 35 toward the teeth 34 since the chalkholding member 20 is disposed transversely of the casing lll and the slots 32.

Finger gripping pieces il@ are integrally formed with the leg portions 3B, overlie the wall l2 and project laterally from the casing so that the lock ing members can be simultaneously moved toward each other, by the thumb and middle nger of a user, to force the dogs 3S from the teeth and to permit the chalk-holding member 20 to be moved toward the discharge opening.

Upon release of the inward pressure on the pieces 40, the spring 38 will urge the dogs 36 toward the teeth 34.

Flanges or guide tongues 4I are provided at the ends of the sleeve 22 and are slidably received in longitudinal guide slots 42 formed in the wall I4 to prevent twisting of the chalk-holding member relative to the casing or lateral movement of the 'chalk-holding member relative to` the casing.

Guide plates 44 and 46 are integrally formed with the walls I2 and I4 respectively, at the open end of the casing I0. The plate 4G is flush with the wall I4 whereas the plate 44 slopesfrom the wall I2 and toward the wall 4S to form a restrictedexit 48 or an exit smaller that the opening I8.

The numeral 50 represents an elongated piece of ilatthin chalk having a rib 52 at one end for reception in the channel 26 and ybetween the channel ZSand plate 24.

In practical use of the present invention, the chalk-holding member 20 is moved outwardly of the opening I2 and between the plates 44 and 46 so vthatthe rib 52 of the chalk can be placed into the retainer channel.

To remove a used piece of chalk C as shown in Figure 5, the rib 52 of a new piece of chalk is slipped into the retainer channel which will force the'rib of the chalk C from the retainer channel to effect an ejection of the old chalk C.

While this invention purports to a chalk holder and improved chalk for the marking of cloth, it is in no way to be construed that this limits its usefulness as a marking device in other elds, nor is the shape oi the rib 520i the chalk or the shape of the channel 26 of the chalk holder as shownv in the drawings to be construed as nal in construction and can be altered in shape to conform to better manufacturing methods or as use dictates.

Having described the claimedas new is:

l. A chalk holder comprising an elongated invention, what is case having an open end, an upper wall and a Y lower wall, a hollow member received within the case and disposed transversely of the case, guide loops at the ends of said hollow member, the lower wall of said case having a pair of lungitudinally extending slots slidably receiving said loops, means integrally formed with said hollow member for holding a piece of chalz, the upper wall of said oase having a pair of longitudinal openings including toothed edges, a pair oi locking members slidably carried by the hollow member and including upstanding end portions projecting through said openings, and means within said holiow member^ urging the upstanding portions oi locking members toward the toothed edges of said longitudinal openings.

2. The combination of claim l wherein said locking members include finger gripping portions projecting laterally from the case and slidably supportedr upon the upper wall of said case.

3. A cha-1k holder comprising an elongated case havingan opzning at one end, a hollow member disposed transversely ei the case and mounted within the case, said casing including a bottom wall having a pair of longitudinally extending spaced parallel siots, guides at the ends ci said hollow member slidably received in said slots, said hollow member beingopen at its ends, a pair of L-shaped locking members each including a longer leg and a shorter leg, the longer legs of said locking members being slidably received in the ends of said hollow member, said case including an upper wall having a pair of longitudinally extending parallel openings, said openings including outer toothed edges, the shorter legs oi said locking members projecting through said pair of openings, dogs projecting laterally from the shorter legs of said locking member engaged between selected pairs of teeth on said toother edges, a single spring member within said hollow member and biasing the longer legs of said locking members from the ends of the hollow member and the dogs against the toothed edges of said pair of openings, and. means carried by said hollow member for supporting a chalk within the case.

A chalk holder comprising an elongated case having an opening at one end, a hollow member disposed transversely of the case and mounted within theA case, said casing including a bottom wall having'a pair of longitudinally extending spaced parallel slots, guides at the ends of said hollow member slidably received in said slots, said hollow member being open at its ends, a pair of L -shaped locking members each including a longer leg and a shorter leg, the longer legs of said locking members being slidably receivedv in' the ends of said hollow member, said case including an upper wall having a pair of longitudinally extending parallel cpenings, said openings including outer toothed edges, the shorter legs of said locking members projecting through said pair of openings, dogs projecting laterally from the shorter legs of said locking members engaged between selected pairs oi teeth on said toothed edges, a single spring member within said hollow member and biasing the longer legs of said locking members from the ends of the hollow member and the dogs against the toothed edges of said pair of openings, a channel member carried by and paralleling said hollow member, and a plate carried by said hollow member and underlying said channel, said channel adapted to receive a rib on a chalk and said plate adapted to retain avrib on a chalk in saidY channel.

5'. A chalk holder comprising an elongated case having a dispensing opening at one end, a hollow member slidably carried by and positioned in said case and disposed transversely of said case for sliding movement toward and away from the opening, said hollow member having open ends, a pair of locking members slidably mounted in the ends of said hollow member, means carried by saidcase engaging said locking members, and a single spring acting on both locking members and urgingY the locking members to their locked position.
