taining merchandise containers in predetermined positions and so as to facilitate the selection of proper. containers during individual sales thereof.

The invention is best described in connection with containers or boxes for. cosmetics in which the general practice is to design or ornament the box itself so as to appeal to the esthetic sensibilities of a purchaser. In fact, many such products go so far as. to relegate trade marks or the like to an inconspicuous. position generally in the rear of the box. where ornamental material may be omitted. Disposed at. such unornamented areas is otherinformation such as the specific nature of the merchandise, its weight,

' and any other details which may be required by labeling laws.

It. should further be observed that the use of cylindrical face powder containers is fairly common'. in the industry. In such constructions. the information above mentioned is. generally provided on a transverse rear wall of the container, such wall being round and generally of the diameter of the cylinder. It can be seen, there fore, that when a series-of such containers are aligned So that a sales person may conveniently sellparticular selections to. a. customenit is impossible for the sales person to see all the rear walls simultaneously inorder to distinguish the contents of each container. As a result, it has been found that the sales person will often turn all the containers rearside up so thatv she can read the information. and dispense the merchandise with facility. Of course, this practice destroys the entire effect of the container ornamentation insofar asit may be viewed by the customer during purchase and is highly undesirable from a merchandising viewpoint.

It-should also be noted that since the containers are cylindrical, they roll haphazardly when disposed. upon their cylindrical side wall so that when it is attempted to arrange for the informative wall. to face the sales person. while the front wall faces the customer, it-is extremely diflicult to maintain the container in a fixed position particularly withreference to adjacent containers which should be properly aligned.

Bearing the foregoing in mind, it is an object of the present invention. to provide. means .00- operating with. a container of j the character described. whereby it maybe caused to assume. a predetermined and fixed position although resting upon a cylindrical Wall,' and wherein means are. further. provided to immediately and .easily 2 with this object is the provision of means. where by a plurality of such containers may be aligned so asto remain in fixed relative positions and: wherein auxiliary means serve to identify the contents of each container notwithstandingv their alignment and mutual proximity.

It is another object of this invention to provide position stabilizing and identifying means for cosmetic containers wherein. such means are conveniently disposable after the merchandise has been purchased in order that the ornamental qualities of the container are not disturbed or detracted from during the ordinary use of the article.

Other objects of my invention will be apparen from the'following description, it being understood that the above general statements of the objects of my invention are intended todescribe and not limit it in any manner.

Referring to'Fig. 1, the insert blank I l shown therein has a main body I5, and integral ex? tremities i6 and IT. The blankmaybe formed of paper, cardboard, transparent plastic such as cellophane or any equivalent flexible material. At. the outer. end of extremity It may be provided indicia such as the shade of the powder contained in. the powder box. .As illustrated, the shade designation is repeated. and written oppositely so that when theouter end is folded along. the. scored line 18, the designation'reads correctly on bothsides of the fold.

out line at 22. Thus, when the outer end of extremity l6 has been folded as described, and when members 20 and 2| are folded on the scored lines 23 and 24, the insert appears as in Fig. 2. The insert H may further be formed with scored lines 25, 26 and 21. If desired, the folded outer portions of the extremities may be secured with adhesive to maintain the folds, but this is not necessary for the practice of the invention.

The article as described is very simply inserted within the face powder container 35 by merely pushing the body l downwardly in the cover portion of the container until it overlies the front wall 3| thereof. The position of the body I5 is shown substantially in dotted lines in Fig. 3. Thereafter, the rear wall 32 connected to the cylindrical wall 33 within which is housed the contents, is inserted into the upper half or cover 34 of the container of which 3| is the front wall. It will be recognized that the container shown has the usual telescopically related body and cover portions. Rear wall 32 is formed of slightly larger diameter than the connected cylindrical wall 33 so as to provide a boss or flange 35 which supports the depending wall 36 of cover 34.

When the body wall 33 is inserted in the cover wall 35, it may push the insert wall l5 down against wall 3| if it is not already there. At this time, or prior to such insertion, the shade designating fold may be bent slightly outwardly along the scored line 21 so that it may be properly acted upon by the flange 35. Thus, when the cylindrical wall 36 approaches the shade designating fold, it will compress it firmly against the flange 35 and bend it to a position which is perpendicular relative to the extremity l6. Simultaneously, the members 2|! and 2| will be likewise bent perpendicularrelative to extremity so as to form feet at the meeting of rear wall 32 with cylindrical wall 36. Hence, the container 30 will be supported satisfactorily by the peripherally disposed feet 20 and 2| so that it is constrained against rolling or other accidental movement. At the same time, the peripherally disposed shade designating fold forms a tab which extends outwardly of the container and discloses the contents thereof to the customer as well as the sales person. Members 26 and 2|, it will be observed, are spaced so as to define that portion of the container wall which is permitted to rest on a support.

In Fig. 5 are illustrated extremities l6 which are disposed at a variety of angles in order that the shade designating tabs be out of alignment. The effect is illustrated in Fig. 9 where the boxes may all be aligned in fixed relative position with their axes coincident and where the insert feet maintain them so and wherein the shade desige nating members are staggered radially to facilitate identification of each container.

In Fig. 4, the feet forming extremity need not be folded to produce such feet, the result being that the feet will be made of single rather than of double thickness. However, the forces which they are adapted to counteract are extremely slight, it being only necessary that they prevent the container from rolling. Accordingly, they may be of the single thickness disclosed and may even fold or wrinkle without materially affecting their function.

The main body l5 of the insert may be utilized as an advertising medium so that in this respect alone it affords some advantages. As illustrated in Fig. 6, the center portion 40 of the insert may 'bdmut out'to-render'the inner'dace of wall 3| visually accessible if it is desired to expose any information thereon instead of concealing it. Advertising material 4| may appear as convenient.

In any of the embodiments shown, the consumer may, if desired, throw away the insert after having purchased the article or make any use thereof which she sees fit. v

In Figs. '7 and 8 are illustrated; embodiments of the invention which are more'orie'ss permanently associated with the container. In Fig. '7, the container rear wall has secured thereto a label or the like 46. Such label may be made of paper, cardboard or transparent plastic, as hereinbefore mentioned. It is probably preferable to utilize a material less flexible than cellophane in order that the feet serve their function properly. Label 46 has formed, integrally therewith, the feet 4'5 and 48 for the purposes above mentioned. A shade designating tab 49 is also integral with label 46 and may be detached as desired by virtue of the reduced connection illustrated.

In Fig. 8, the rear wall 56 is itself formed with an enlarged base portion 5| which is straight rather than arcuate. Accordingly, it serves to brace the container against rolling by providing a platform therefor. The label 52 is adhesively secured to rear wall and the shade designating tab 53 is integral therewith.

I have shown preferred embodiments of my invention but it is obvious that numerous changes and omissions may be made therefrom without departing from its spirit.

I claim:

1. The combination with a cylindrical container having telescopically related body and cover portions, of a flexible insert for said container, said insert comprising a main portion enclosed within said container, and a pair of extremities integral with said main portion and extending outwardl between the telescopically assembled body and cover portions of said container, one of said extremities being shaped to form feet which project outwardly from the periphery of said container for supporting said container against rolling movement while res-ting on a cylindrical wall thereof, and the other extremity forming a tab disposed outwardly from the periphery of said container and adapted to receive indicia thereon.

2. The combination according to claim 1 wherein said main portion of said flexible insert is maintained against the cover portion of the container, said extremities being bent perpendicularly where they emerge from said container so as to form said feet and said tab respectively.

3. The combination with a cylindrical container having telescopically related body and cover portions of supporting means'extending from between the telescopically assembled body and cover portions for maintaining said container against rolling while resting on a cylindrical wall thereof, a tab, a connecting portion integral with and between said tab and said supporting means, said connection portion between the tab and the supporting means being held against the inner face of the cover portion, the tab and supporting means extending outwardly from the peripher of the container at points other than diametrically opposite each other. i

The combination with a cylindrical container having telescopically related body and coyer por- -tiens-, of=a"fiexibie insert for'said container, s'aid insert comprising a main portion enclosed within said container, an extremity integral with said main portion and extending outwardly between the telescopically assembled body and cover portions of said container, said extremity being formed with a pair of spaced feet which project radially outwardly from the periphery of said container.

5. The combination with a cylindrical container having telescopically related bod and cover portions, of a flexible insert for said container, said insert comprising a main portion enclosed within said container, an extremity integral with said main portion and extending outwardly between the telescopically assembled body and cover portions of said container, said extremity being formed with a pair of spaced feet which project radially outwardly from the periphery of said container, said feet being formed by folding over end areas of said extremity.

6. The combination according to claim 5 and 6 wherein said extremity is maintained perpendicularly to said main portion and wherein said extremity is substantially enclosed within said container, the feet thereof emerging therefrom.
