Patented May 1, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Claims.
This invention relates to new and .useful improvements and structural refinements in supports or hangers for cables, and the principal object of the invention is to facilitate convenient, dependable and safe supporting of electrical and other cables in mines, warehouses, and the like.
This object is achieved by the provision of the instant hanger which includes in its construction a pair of coacting jaws adapted to engage opposite sides of a support, such as for example, an overhead beam, truss, rafter, etc., an important feature of the invention residing in the provision of a seat for cables on the hanger, together with means for retaining cables in position in the seat.
Another feature of the invention resides in the provision of means for adjusting the spacing of the support engaging jaws, whereby the invention may accommodate supports of different sizes and types.
Some of the advantages of the invention lie in its simplicity of construction, in its dependable and versatile operation, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important object and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view thereof;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 3-3 in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is. a cross-sectional view, similar to that shown in Figure 2, but illustrating a modified embodiment of the invention;
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 55 in Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a top member of the invention.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, and more particularly to Figures 1-3, inclusively, the invention consists of a cable hanger designated generally by the reference character ID, the same embodying in its construction an elongated base member I2 provided at one end thereof with a stationary jaw l4 terminating in a pointed extremity or edge It, while a top member I8 is positioned on the base member 12, as will be clearly apparent.
The top member I8 is elongated and one end portion thereof constitutes a coacting jaw 23 having a pointed extremity or edge 22 disposed in opposing relation to the corresponding extremity N3 of the stationary jaw l4, it being noted that the intermediate portion of the top member I8 is provided with a screw 24 which is selectively receivable in a row of screw-threaded apertures 26 provided in the base member I2, whereby the spacing of the jaws I4, 20 may be varied as desired and whereby the jaws may be locked in a predetermined spaced position, as required by the thickness of a support 23, 30 or 32 (see Fi ures 1, 2 and 4, respectively) to which the hanger may be attached. Such a support may assume any suitable configuration, such as for example, of a log or joist, as indicated at 28, or a rectangular wooden beam, as indicated at 30, or a steel beam, as indicated at 32, it being noted that the jaws I4, 20 are so configurated as to be universally adapted to the different types of supports, Moreover, in instances where wooden supports are available, the pointed extremities I6, 22 of the jaws may be embedded into the supports, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
In any event, it is to be noted that an endless band 34 extends around the intermediate portions of the hanger members l2, l8 and is slidable thereon, the purpose thereof being to hold the two members together independently of the screw 24, so that separation of the members is prevented while the member I8 is adjusted on the member l2 after removing the screw.
The free end portion of the top member 18 is provided with an upwardly extending keeper arm 36 which may, if desired, be formed integrally with the member l8, its function being to retain cables 38 in position on a cable seat 40 constituted by an intermediate portion of the member l8, as is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2.
It will be clearly apparent from the foregoing that by virtue of the hanger the cables 38 may be conveniently and dependably mounted on the supports 28, 30 or 32, and if desired, the upwardly extending keeper arm 36 may be adjustably secured to the top member 18 by a single screw 42 so that, in instances where the supports 28, 30, or 32 are inclined, the hanger members l2, I8 may be transversely inclined with the supports but the keeper arm 36 may be adjusted as indicated at 44 in Figure 6 so that it remains substantially vertical to safeguard against any 3 possibility of the cables becoming displaced from the seat 40.
Finally, it is to be noted that the upper end portion of the keeper arm 36 may be outwardly angulated, as at 46, so as to assist in the application of cables to the hanger.
Referring now to the modified embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying Figures 4 and 5, this is designated generally by the reference character 56 and is similar to the embodiment already described, insofar that it consists of a base member 52 provided with a stationary jaw 54 and with a top member 56, equipped with a coacting jaw 58, the top member 56 affording a cable seat 60 and being provided with a keeper arm 62, similar to the aforementioned arm 36.
However, in this instance, the means for adjustably connecting the members 52, 56 consists of an endless band 64 which extends around intermediate portions of the two members and is provided in the upper portion thereof with a locking screw 66, the latter bearing against the upper surface of the member 56 so that when the screw is tightened, the two members are frictionally engaged in the band 64 and relative sliding thereof is prevented.
This modified form of construction eliminates the necessity of providing the base member with screw-threaded apertures and also facilitates a relatively finer degree of adjustment in the spacing of the jaws.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure, and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a cable hanger, the combination of an elongated base member having a beam supporting end portion and an intermediate portion, a stationary jaw provided at one end of said beam supporting end portion, an elongated top member slidably mounted on said intermediate portion of said base member and movable toward and away from said stationary jaw, a coacting jaw provided at one end of said top member in opposing relation to the stationary jaw, said jaws being adapted to engage opposite sides of a support, an intermediate portion of said top member constituting a cable seat, and an upwardly extending cable retaining arm provided at the remaining end of said top member, means selectively locking said top member to said intermediate portion of said base member.
2. In a cable hanger, the combination of an elongated base member provided with a row of screw-threaded apertures, a stationary jaw at one end of said base member, an elongated top member positioned on said base member, a coacting jaw provided at one end of the top member in opposing relation to the stationary jaw, said jaws bein adapted to engage opposite sides of a support, a screw provided on said top member and receivable selectively in said apertures whereby the distance between said jaws may be varied, an intermediate portion of said top member constituting a cable seat, and an upwardly extending cable retaining arm provided at the remaining end of said top member.
3. The device as defined in claim 2 together with a slidable guiding band extending around intermediate portions of said members and connecting the same together independently of said screw.
4. In a cable hanger, the combination of an elongated base member, a stationary jaw at one end thereof, an elongated top member slidably positioned on said base member, a coacting jaw provided at one end of the top member in opposing relation to the stationary jaw, a slidable guiding band extending around intermediate portions of said members, a locking screw provided on said band and frictionally engageable with one of said members for locking the members against relative sliding movement whereby said jaws may be retained in a predetermined spaced relation and in engagement with opposite sides of a support, an intermediate portion of said top member constituting a cable seat, and an upwardly extending cable retaining arm provided at the remaining end of said top member. 5. The combination of claim 1 wherein said jaws are wedge shaped, the upper surface of said jaws lying parallel to said base member.
