Description
April 17, 1951 H. BLYTHE 2,549,658
DISPLAY DEVICE Filed Oct. 26, 1946 Inventor loads 1]. 5572226 WW 19m Patented Apr. 17, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFlCE DISPLAY DEVICE Louis H. Blythe, Evansville, Ind. Application October 26, 1946, Serial No. 705,933 7 My invention relates to a display device and more specifically to an illuminated stand for exhibiting cards and/or other objects for ornamental or utilitarian purposes.
-A primary object-of this invention is the provision of an ornamental device adapted to serve as a befitting trophy such as are awarded to successful contestants in sport events.
A second object of this invention is to provide a device of this character with an illuminating device which permits the introduction of an interest feature auxiliary to that carried by the usual model trophy and which feature when it takes the form of a photograph may be chosen by the recipient of the award to suit his individual prejudices or interests.
A third object of this invention is to provide such a device with constructional details enabling it to be manufactured at little 'cost yet having'a very attractive appearance. v A fourthobject is to provide a device of this character which is adaptable for use as a trophy or award in many games, particularly those games employing a ball or globular object such as bowling, baseball, golf, tennis or boxing in which last case a boxing glove is illuminated, and for other similar display uses.
With these and other objects in view, as shall appearas this disclosure proceeds, this invention consists in the novel construction, com
. bination and arrangement of parts as will be described hereinafter in detail, and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a material part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a preferred embodiment of this invention;
Figure. 2 is a central vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 in Figure 1, but showing parts in elevation to clarify the illustration; and,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the display holder and card display.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar or identical parts throughout the several views of the drawings. As shown in Figure 1, this invention comprises a hemispherical base H! which is provided, near thelbase thereof with an interior horizontally disposed plate I 2 rigidly secured to the base near the lower rim thereof. This plate 12 facilitates the use of a cushioning pad Hi, this pad making the invention more adaptable for certain uses.
At the top of the base It! there is an upstanding neck I6, which in the particular embodiment of my invention which is shown in the drawings is screw threaded on the outside thereof.
6 claims. ,1 (01. 40-126) A top plate l8 of the. same diameter as the neck "5 is adapted to be Sfirmly held on the top of theneck l6 bythe bolt 20. This plate has a primary function of holding the bracket 22 which in turn at its top is provided with spring clips 24 adapted to hold a display. This .dis-
play will probably be in the form of a card orphotograph and the inventor envisages a disother displays may be used.
To illuminate the display a lamp 28 is provided and this lamp may be mounted in a socket 313 in said plate I8. The lamp will normally be small and located underneath or behind the display. Connecting wires 32 and a switch 34 mounted on the base It together with power lines 36 complete the electrical circuit.
A hollow object 38 representing a bowling ball, football or boxing'gloves, or like objects, is formed with a neck portion 40 which may be screwed to fit the neck portion l6 of the base and this neck portion 49 will normally have a flange at the inner end thereof and internally disposed,
to be used to clamp the plate l8 between this flange and the top of the neck I 6.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings only a small portion of the hollow object 38 is made transparent. This is represented by the small window 42 through which the display 26 may be viewed.
On the base ill a plaque 44 may be secured by such means as small bolts with the nuts therefor disposed towards the inside of the base so as to make this plaque easily attachable. It should be noted that a linear relationship will normally exist between said plaque, said window 42 and said display 26 solthat the plaque and the display may be viewed from the same direction. It will also be noted that a cogitive relationship will exist between said plaque, the display and the form of the hollow body 38. The inventor envisages one use of his invention to include the illumination of a plaque giving the name of a winner and details of a sports event while the display will constitute a picture of the team or group with which this person was associated, and the hollow body 38 will take a form of an article used in the play such as a bowling ball. 7. i
Though I have shown a particular embodiment of this invention, I do not wish to be limited to this particular embodiment and desire to include in the scope of the invention the construction, combination andarrangement of parts substantiallyas set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A display device including a generally hemispherical hollow base, a horizontally disposed plate removably secured to the top thereof and the circular edge of the base being disposed downwardly, a display holder secured to said plate, said base having an upstanding neck at the top of the base and said plate being secured to and within said neck, a horizontally disposed plate secured to said base near the bottom thereof, the first mentioned plate being secured to the other plate by a bolt and said display holder comprising a bracket with spring clips thereon adapted to grasp and hold a display, a hollow globular member having a neck securable to said neck on the base, said member being largely opaque but having a window adjacent said display holder.
2. A display device comprising a base with a screwed neck, a display holder mounted on a plate resting on said neck, a largely opaque but partially transparent hollow member having a neck secured to said neck and enclosing said display holder with a display mounted therein, said neck on the hollow member having a flange, and said flange holding said plate peripherally on the neck of said base.
3. A combination according to claim 2 and including a lamp within said hollow member and mounted on said plate on the side of said holder remote from said transparent portion and adapted to illuminate a display held in said display holder whereby a silhouette of said display is made visible through said transparent portion. 4. A combination according to claim 2 and including an electric lamp within said hollow member, a display of card character held in said display holder, said lamp being positioned on the side of said display remote from a transparent portion of said hollow member, whereby a silhouette of said display is made visible through said transparent portion.
5. A display device comprising a generally hemispherical hollow base with the circular edge thereof disposed downwardly, an externally threaded neck on the top of said base, a plate resting on the top of said neck, another plate secured to the base adjacent the said circular edge thereof, an elongated member extending between and holding the plates together, a hollow globular member having a neck threaded on the first mentioned neck, a lamp and a display mounted on the first mentioned plate and within the globular member, said globular member having a window, the remaining portions of the globular member being opaque.
6. A device according to claim 5, and wherein said display is positioned between said window and said lamp.
