BY 9mm MM 5m Patented Apr. 17, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I CONTAINER VISE Glen F. Heth, Fort Atkinson, wis,
Application July 19, 1948, Serial No. 39,401
This invention relates to a novel vise for securing a preferably cylindrical container, which container may be fabricated of metal, cardboard, plastic, or the like.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which will firmly hold a container, such as an ice cream carton, and prevent its turning when material is being withdrawn from the container.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a novel container vise comprising a base member, a pair of uprights secured in spaced relationship to each other on the base member, a plurality of discontinuous bands guidingly retained in spaced parallel relationship upon the uprights, and a novel and readily accessible means for opening and closing the bands about any de sired container. 7
These, together with various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the device, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device of the instant invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary rear elevational view of the device illustrating the means for guidingly retaining a band on one of the uprights; and
Figure f is a perspective view of a modified base member employed in connection with the device.
Specific reference is now made to the drawings. In the several views in the accompanying drawings and in the following specification reference characters indicate corresponding elements throughout.
Indicated generally at It is a base member, which may be of any desired form, but which preferably consists of a circular base plate l2 to which is secured an annular flange M. It
6 Claims. (01. 248-361) is to be understood, of course, that this flange may be integral with the base plate l2. As shown in Figure 4, the base member may be modified to erably diammetrically opposed, two of which lugs and 22 serve as means for retaining the first upright 24 and the second upright 26 to the base member.
In the preferred form, as shown in Figure 1,
the uprights 2 1 and 26 are secured, preferably by means of bolts or rivets 28, to the inner surface of the flange l5. Vertically spaced upon the upright is a plurality ofguide and retaining means which consists of a plurality of brackets 38 having an arcuated portion 32 which is spaced from the upright 25 and which is secured thereto by means of a pair of flanges 34 and 36 having bolts 38 extending through the flanges and the upright 26.
Guidingly retained on the upright 26 in the brackets between the inner surface of the arcuate portion 32 and the outer surface of the upright 26 is a plurality of flexible bands 40,,
each of which is secured at one end 42 to the first upright 24 by means of suitable bolts or other fastening pins 44.
The free ends of the bands 4! are further provided with sleeve members it which are preferably integra1 with the bands and may be formed upon the bands Ml, as shown in Figure 1, by turning the free end of the bands 40 inwardly or outwardly upon the band and securing the edge thereof to the band by means of suitable bolts or fastening pins as.
The first upright 24 is further provided with a plurality of vertically spaced apertured lugs for rotatably retaining therethrough a crank arm 52 having vertically spaced cranks 54, preferably U-shaped, the web portions of which engageably receive the sleeves 46 of the bands Ml. Secured to or integral with the crank arm 52, and preferably at the top thereof, is a suitable handle portion 56.
In practical operation, the container is slid between the uprights 24 and 26 and supported on the base plate it of the base member I D. By merely rotating the handle portion 56 of the crank arm 52 in a clockwise direction, the bands 40 will be closed about the container and frictionally retain the container in the vise as shown in Figure 2.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art, A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit'of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A container vise comprising a base member,
, end of each of said bands, a crank arm including vertically spaced cranks engageably receiving said sleeves, and means for rotatably retaining said crank arm upon said first upright.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said first-mentioned means includes a plurality of vertically spaced brackets.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said crank arm retaining means includes a plurality of vertically spaced apertured lugs on said first.
upright engageably receiving said crank arm.
4. The combination of claim 3 and a handle portion carried by said crank arm.
5. A container vise comprising a base member having a circular bottom plate and an annular flange secured thereto, a first upright secured to said flange, a second upright secured to said 4 flange and diametrically opposed to said first upright, a plurality of discontinuous bands secured at one end to said first upright, vertically spaced guide brackets on said second upright for guidingly retaining said bands thereon, sleevescarried by the free ends of said bands, a crank arm including vertically spaced cranks engageably receiving said sleeves, a handle portion on said crank arm, and means for rotatably retaining said crank arm upon said firstupright.
6. The combination of claim 5 wherein said base member includes a circular bottom plate and a plurality of circumferentially spaced upstanding lugs, said first and second uprights being secured to two of said lugs.
