GOLF BAG CLUB HOLDING MEANS Filed Aug. 1'7, 1950 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 1 T? If Patented Apr. 17, T951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,549,055 GOLF BAG CLUB HOLDING MEANS James R. Burton, Jr., Jasper, Ala.
Application August 17, 1950, Serial No. 180,005 2 Claims. (01. 150-15) This invention relates to golf bag club holding means. The main objects of the invention are to provide such means that will be highly efiicient for the purpose intended, simple in structure, easy to use, and extremely durable. A regular type golf bag is generally provided with a plurality of loops around its top for golf clubs to be inserted therein so that a player will have no trouble in selecting the club required at the time. At the present time such loops are generally made of cloth or plastic material, and are not satisfactory because the cloth, type will not hold its shape and the plastic type will not long resist wear and tear. The present structure is made of thick leather which will stand much use and abuse, and is also made in a novel and improved manner as to shape.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the drawings and description.
By referring generally to the drawings, part of this application, it will be observed that Fig. l isa top plan view of a golf bag with loops according to the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an edge view of Fig. 2; Fig. f is an edge of Fig. 2 opposite the other edge; Fig. is a plan view of top edge and part of one side; Fig. 6 is a detail view of one side of the bag showing how the loops are formed and attached; Fig. '7 is a plan view of a loop member as it appears before attaching to the bag; Fig. 8 is an edge view of Fig. '7; and Fig. 9 is a detail view showing how the loop member is formed for attaching to the bag.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the loop forming member comprises a piece of comparatively thick leather 1 with a curved edge 2 having the opposite edge defining a plurality of integral tabs 3 partly cut off at ends 4 with separating slits 5 and rivet holes 6. Two such members are attached around the top portion 1 of a golf bag 8 by rivets 9 as plainly shown in Fig. 6. The upper edges of the sides or the lining of the bag is attached to the lower edge ofthe loop members so that. golf clubs inserted through the loops will be contained between the outer walls of the bag and the inner walls or lining, with center compartment of the bag between the dual walls, the same being standard structure and no part of the present invention which is limited to the leather loop forming members as holding means for golf clubs.
From the foregoing it will appear that a golf bag equipped with the present invention will be suitable for long and heavy duty use, will retain its shape and attractive appearance.
The loop members may be made in different sizes and capacities, depending on the sizes of bags on which to be used.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to limit same to the exact and precise details of structure, but reserve the right to make all modifications and changes so long as they remain within the scope of the invention and the following claims.
Having described my invention I claim:
1. Golf club holding means attached to a golf bag comprising, a piece of leather defining a shape having one edge slightly curved inwardly, the opposite edge having a plurality of integral tabs, each of said tabs having a blunt shaped end, said piece having a slit between each tab and the remainder of the piece, the slit edges intersecting the line of the blunt shaped end, said tabs having holes therein for inserting rivets therethrough, the width of said leather piece being substantially equal at its ends and at the widest parts of the said tabs, and being less in width near the blunt ends of the said tabs, said golf club holding means being further characterized by each of said tabs partially overlapping its adjacent tab to form a plurality of loops, rivets inserted through the holes in said tabs where they overlap each other, said rivets holding said tabs together to thus form said loops, said piece of leather being adapted for attaching to the upper open end of a golf bag as golf club holding means therefor.
2. A golf bag having golf club holding means comprising, oneach side upper portion a plurality of loops formedof a piece of leather defining a shape having one edge slightly curved inwardly, the opposite edge having a plurality of integral tabs, each of said tabs having a blunt shaped end, said piece having a slit between each tab and the remainder of the piece, the slit edges intersecting the line of the blunt shaped end, said tabs having holes therein and rivets therethrough attaching same in overlapping position to said golf bag, each tab partially overlapping its adjacent tab, the width of said leather piece being substantially equal at its ends and at the widest parts of the said tabs, and being less in width near the blunt ends of the tabs.
