Description
NITEI) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE BERTOLET, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
STEAM-ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,480, dated September 20, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE BERTOLET, of the city of Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cylinder- Cock Apparatus for Discharging the 1Water from the Cylinder of Locomotives and other Steam-Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and opera-- tion of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- 'Figure l is a side view, Fig. 2, an end view.
The letters in both figures refer to the same parts. t
A, A, represents a longitudinal section of a locomotive cylinder attached to a portion of the frame f, f, f, f. Near each end of the cylinder there is a boss, B, B, into which is screwed the cocks C, C. These cocks are of peculiar construction. They are each fitted with a valve c, fv, having its seat at S, S.
O, is an opening through which the water escapes when the valve is for that purpose.
I, I, is a bar passing through the stem of each valve, which is slotted for that purpose.
B, R, are arms one end of which is attached to the bar I, I, and the other end to the lugs on the cylinder cocks at L, L. The rod N, connects the bar I, I, with the right angled lever T, T, and compensates for the radius of said lever and the arms R, R. The lever T, T, is secured to the shaft E, which is attached to the frame of the engine on either side for the purpose of working the cocks on both cylinders. The rod IV, connects the lever T, with a similar lever M, on top of the frame. This lever changes the direction of motion from perpendicular to horizont-al and'is connected loy the rod F, with a handle or straight lever D, which is placed in a situation most convenient to the engineer.
l, l, l, 1 are pins which connect the several parts they are wired to prevent their coming outl as represented by 2, 2.
The operation of this apparatus is olovious viz, if the lever D, be drawn to P, the whole mechanical arrangement changes its position to that indicated by the dotted lines thus raising or opening the valves in two or four cylinder cocks simultaneously.
I/Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letl ters Patent is- The peculiar arrangement of the bar I, I, in the slotted valve stem and the connection of the arms It, R, with the cylinder cocks HORACE BERTOLET.
IVitnesses:
CHAs. MELCHER,
P. C. CLARK.
