E. BERG CHICK BROODER -March 27, 1951 2 Sheets-Sheet Filed Nov. 6, 1945 INVENTOR. EZEA 552G Patented Mar. 27, 1951 UNITED STATES TENT DEFECE The present invention relates to chick brooders and is more particularly concerned with a brooder constructed to provide controlled heat and accommodations for growing chicks.
One of the objects of the invention is to pro"- vide an adjustable hover to accommodate growing chicks and young turkeys.
Another object of the invention is to provide a chick brooder constructed to afford controlled and evenly distributed heat.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a chick brooder of simpler and more compact construction than prior devices.
With the foregoing and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention:
Figure l is a top plan view of the invention, partly in section.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation, partly in section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section through the device of Figure l with the canopy, apron and curtain omitted.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detailed section taken on the line 4- 5 of Figure 1.
Like numerals in the description and drawings designate the same parts of construction.
In general terms, this invention comprises three main elements, namely, a hot-water tank supported on standards, a removable canopy and a surrounding curtain or curtains enclosing the hover compartment for the chicks. The novel construction of each and their interrelations will be specifically described hereinafter.
Water tank l is preferably rectangular, made of metal or other suitable material with closed top 2, and of suitable depth to contain a layer of heated water over the hover or compartment 3, sufficient to maintain an even, dosirable temperature throughout same. Water is supplied to the tank through a supplementary filler pipe ll which opens through the top wall thereof. The level of the water in filler pipe 4 is maintained about half-way up the sides so as to insure against loss of water in the tank by evaporation and also to keep the water level in the tank up to the underside of the tank top 2.
The removable canopy 5 for the brooder is supported atop the tank I and is preferably pyramidal in form. Above the open, filler pipe ll, the canopy is provided with an opening 5 and flap cover 7 therefor, adapted to be fastened by 1 Claim. (01. 11933) any suitabl means, such as a pivotal catch. This opening or port in the canopy affords access to said pipe either to replenish the water in tank 5 or to inspect the water level in said pipe.
Beneath said canopy is a chamber 8, which may be dome-shaped asillustrated and superimposed centrally on the top wall 2 of tank I. This chamber contains the water heater, preferably an electric unit with a conventional wire and plug connection 9 to a circuit and controlled by a thermostat switch it on the outside of the canopy.
The horizontally disposed water tank is supported on extensible standards or legs H and said tank and legs are surrounded by a depending apron E2 of light metal or other suitable material. This apron is secured to the canopy 3 in the region of the top of the tank and extends a suitable distance below the tank bottom to cover the top hem of curtain l8.
The le s or standards I! may be tubular and telescopic as illustrated in Figure 5, to permit extension thereof. The upper members I3 are provided with a plurality of vertically aligned holes i l through opposite sides thereof for the reception of a pin it which normally rests on top of the lower member of the leg, thus permittin the raising of the water tank above the floor of hover as may be desired. Members l3 are secured to lateral extensions to the top wall 2 of the tank.
Apron I2 is also provided with a plurality of vertically aligned holes [6 adjacent the legs and located to register with the holes I I in the upper members of the legs. Pins l5 are elongated and are adapted to engage said holes l 6.
Supported removably on said pins I5 is a curtain rod ll which may be continuous or made in sections and this rod holds a fabric curtain l8, which also may be continuous or made in sections. This curtain is provided on the bottom edge with scollops l9, which provide openings for the ingress and egress of the chicks and it is of suitable length to shut in compartment 3 at any adjusted height of the tank.
While the curtain contains the heat in said compartment, sufiicient ventilation for fresh air therein is afforded by said openings between the scollops and the space between the top of the curtain and apron l2.
In operation this brooder will provide even temperature from the hot water tank, uniformly distributed throughout the compartment 3, thus discouraging the chicks from piling up for warmth.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a brooder, a plurality of vertically disposed legs arranged in spaced parallel relation to form an enclosure, said legs each comprising a plurality of telecoping sections, a flat fluid container 1 horizontally positioned in said enclosure and fixedly secured to the top sections of said legs, a rigid skirt concentrically disposed about the top sections of said legs and spaced from the latter, a pin extensible through each of said top sections and the skirt adjacent thereto for locking said legs in a predetermined adjusted position relative to a supporting surface, means carried by said pins intermediate said legs and the skirt adjacent thereto for supporting a curtain, and means carried above said container and supported by the latter for providing heat energy to said container, whereby said container may be vertically positioned relative to a supporting surface.
