IMPROVEMENT IN SEEDING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 25,456, dated September 13, 1859.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, M. L. TOURTELETT, of Neshonoc,in the county of La Grosse and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and Improved SeedingMachine; and Ido hereby declare, that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1' is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line x at, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan or top View of same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
To enable thoseskilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a rectangular frame, which is mounted on two wheels, B B, a draft-pole, 0, being attached to the axle D.
On the frame A two oblong hoppers, E E, are attached, said hoppers having perforated bottoms a, underneath each of.which a perforated slide, b, is placed. (See Fig. 1.)
In each hopper E E a slide, F, is placed longitudinally. These slides are allowed to work or vibrate freely in the hoppers, and they are connected at one end by a bar, 0. The front slide, F, is connected by a bar, (I, to a trasverse-rod, e, which connects the front ends of two levers, G H, the lever H having its fulcrum-pin f about at its center, and the lever G its fulcrum-pin g at one end.
To one of the wheels, B, a serpentine or zigzag cam, I, is attached, said cam .being fitted between pins h h at the under side of lever G.
To the under side of each slide F pendants t' are attached, said pendants serving as stirrers, and extending nearly down to the perforated bottoms a, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. Each slide F is covered by a cap, J. These caps extend the whole length of the hopper, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and pro tect the slides from the weight of the seed, thereby avoiding much friction.
K is a spring, one end of which is attached to frame A, and the opposite end is attached to the traverse-rod e. The back end of lever H is attached by a pin, 9', to a slide, L, which is perforated, and works through the lower parts of hoppers M M on the frame A, said hoppers being at a suitable distance apart to plant inhills or drills, (see Fig. 2,) and having perforated bottoms a To the back part of the frame A, a bar, N, is attached by joints is k. To this bar the drivers seat 0 is attached by a curved support, Z, and to the bar N a curved plate or board, P, is attached by bars on m. The curved plate or board 1? is also connected by chains a a to the frame A, a chain being at each side of frame A.
It will be seen by referring to Fig. 1 that the convex side of the plate or board faces the front of the machine.
To the axle D a series of bars 0 are attached by jointsp, and to the back ends of these bars 0 curved rods q are attached, said rods having furrow-shares 0', secured at their lower ends. Any suitable number of these shares may be used.
The operation is as follows As the machine is drawn along, the cam I gives a reciprocating motion to the slides F F and L through the medium of the levers G H and traverse-rod e. The stirrers 2' cause the seed to pass out from the hoppers E, through the perforated bottoms a a, the amount of the discharge being regulated or entirely out off by adjusting the perforated slides 11 b. The slide L, which works in the hoppers M, distributes the seed from said hoppers in the usual way. The spring K insures an equitable or regular movement of the working parts which actuate the sted-distributing device.
It will be seen that the driver mayinstantly cut off the distribution of seed from either hopper by adjusting its perforated slide, and that either hopper, E, may be used for drill or broadcast sowing, according to the number of perforations in the bottoms a and slides 12 thereof.
