SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,255, dated February 28, 1882.
Application filed August 30, 1881. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SELAH M. BAIRD, of Holly, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. The same letters and figures of reference are usedto indicate the corresponding parts;

c is a small chain or cord attached to the sliding arm G by means of the button I). The
chain 0 passes up through the eye-headed bolt d, with the ring 0 at the upper end of the chain.
The bent arm F is used to elevate objects on or near the ground. When elevated sufiiciently high by the bent arm F, the object is then taken by the horizontal arm G and raised to the required position.
The object of the chain c is to raise or lower the arm G to any required position.
The spring-catch D will hold the lover or handle E in a fixed position.
Having now fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The bent and curved arm F and the horizontal arm G, both sliding on the vertical shaft 0, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposesv set forth.
2. Thechain 0, attached to the horizontal arm G, and passing through the eye at, attached to the upper end of the shaft 0, in combination with the bent and curved arm F and the horizontal arm G, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
