(No Model.).-
J. P. JOHNSON.
, PLATFORM SPRING FOR WAGONS.
No. 254,219. Patented Feb. 28,1882.
- a citizen of the United States,
UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
JEREMIAH P. JOHNSON, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR, BY
MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, To JOHNSON,
ROSE & 00., OF DETROIT, MIOH.
PLATFORM-SPRING FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 254,219, dated February 28, 1882. Application filed June 9, 1881. (No model.) Patented in Canada June 7, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH P. JOHNSON,
residing at T0- ronto, county of York, and Province of Ontario, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Platform-Spring Wagon-Gear, (for which I have received Letters Patent in Canada, No. 12,919, dated the 7th day of J nne, 1881;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear, full, and exact description of the same.
The first part of my invention relates to the iron brace attached in the center to the axle and extending on either side, being about fifteen inches in length and provided with a straight rod or bolt passing through the brace at the upper side; also, arod at the lower part connecting with the same by means of two hangersfor holding springs, this rod being bent in such a way as to pass around the under side of the axle, which will be more particularly set forth in drawings hereto attached.
Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved platform-gear Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of my improved brace with connecting-rods, &c. Fig. 4 is an end view of the same; Fig. 5, a side view.
A designates the axle, to whichis attached the brace B; and O designates the straight rod or bolt passing through the: ends of brace B, provided with a'solid head on one end and a nut on the other. Ita-lso passes through the upper portion of the hangers D D, which are intended for holding the springs, and are supported at their lower ends by means of rod E, which is bent in such a way as to pass around the axle at the lower side, d id d with a houlder on each end, d th l themselves passing-through the lower portion 0f the hangers D D are fixed firmly with nuts on the ends of rod, but at the same time allow the hangers to have an easy motion by working on the rods when the pressure is placed on the springs and they expand. Brace B is also separated in the center about threeinches and provided with two clips for fastening to the axle, thus forming a brace sidewise as well as downward.
F is the pole or shaft coupling attached or placed on rod 0 immediately after the hanger D, so that it is securely held by the nut; also, the rear end of the pole or shaft iron, which is formed with an eye for fastening to the pole or shaft coupling with a bolt, willpress against the said nut of the bolt 0, which holds the pole or shaft coupling, thus preventing the working of the nut, and as the rear end of the bolt 0 is provided with solid head, as heretofore set forth, the pole or shaft coupling will never in any way be liable to detachment.
By use of this brace with the rods, hangers, 850., a complete truss-work is formed, and as the brace is attached so near the hub of the wheel the weight of the load on the wagon comes on the axles at the strongest point. The same means gives a long spring, wliich insures an easy motion.
. I am aware that prior to my invention similar wagon-gears have been made with similar parts. Therefore I do not claim the whole as broadly new; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a platform-spring wagon-gear, the brace B, placed at right angles with the axle, spread in the center to form a brace sidewise, and raised at each end about two and one-half inches to form a brace downward, and a lip on each end of the brace extending upward, in combination with rods O and E, shaft-coupling F, and hangers D.
- JEREMIAH P. JOHNSON.
