EDWARD NUNAN, OF SAN rnnnorsoo, CALIFORNIA.
PIPE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,151, dated February 28, 1882.
* Application filed July 20, 1881. (No niodeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD NUNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented acertain new and useful Pipe-Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are, first, to provide a pipe-coupling the parts of which may be quickly united and disunited or disconnected without the aid of a tool or spanner; second, to provide a pipe-coupling in which the meeting ends may be firmly united or locked instantaneously by simply coupling the two parts together by movingan eccentric ring to tighten up the griping-levers. These objects I accomplish by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, showing the parts united. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the coupling disconnected, with the coupling or eccentric ring drawn back and the arms or levers elevated. Fig. 3 is a perspective viewof arm or lever. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the eccentric ring. Fig. 6 is a section taken on line X X of Fig. 5.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several figures.
In the manufacture of my coupling I provide the cap or female end A with a series of longitudinal slots, B, in the base of which is made a recess or depression, 0, to receive the lugs or projections upon the ends of the arms or griping-levers D of which this portion of the coupling is composed. A rabbet, E, is also made in the under face of each lever, the lower portion of which fits over the square shoulder of a collar formed from the metal of the cap or female coupling, while the upper or outer end of each arm or lever extends to the top of the cap and forms a beveled hook or catch to hold the male portion of the coupling F, which male portion is also beveled at F. The levers or arms D are a little thicker than the body of the coupling-cap, and near the upper ends thereof is made a transverse slot, G, on which moves the outer eccentric flanges of a holding and tightening ring, H. The inner face of this ring is not a true circle,
59 but is made eccentric, or with a series of eccentric arcs, and provided with transverse slots H and flanges I I, so that when it is placed around the cap and the levers or arms it may be moved up to the rim of the cap until the outer flanges, I I, of the ring enter the slots at the end of the levers, when by turning the ring to the right the outer ends of the griping-arms are forced down, and the beveled ends of the arms engage with the beveled head of the male portion of the coupling, in which position it is held tightly.
For convenience the lower ends of the arms or levers may be held by pins passing through the solid portion of the cap at its base.
In operation it will be seen that the arms or levers will have sufficient play or movement in their respective slots or openings in the cap of the female portion of the coupling to receive the male portion and adjust the tightening band or ring, while each lever or arm is independent of the other; also, that the lug at the lower end of each arm will engage in the recess made in the cap and permit end-play, and hold the arm firmly when the parts are in position, in such a manner that it will be impossible to remove the male part of the coupling until the ring is drawn backward.
Any suitable packing may be employed to prevent leakage and tighten up the meeting ends of the coupling.
The rapidity and ease with which connection and disconnection are made with my coupling are of great moment when its adaptation to firehose and air and steam brakes is considered, where quick and prompt action is necessary to connect the meeting ends of hose and conducting-pipes, as an instantaneous coupling and uncoupling of the parts can be made.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a pipe-coupling the female portion of which is provided with longitudinalslots or openings and recesses at the base thereof, the arms or levers having holding lugs or projections at their upper and lower ends to fit into said recesses andreceive and engage with the head of the male portion of the coupling, and adapted to be compressed or tightened and held in position by a tightening-ring, con- .for the purposes herein set forth and specified.
3. In combination with the male portion of a pipe-coupling having a beveled head, the cap or femaleportion provided with longitudinal arms or levers having beveled ends to fit over and engage with the end of the male portion and hold it in place when surrounded or compressed by a ring or band, substantially as 20 herein set forth and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 11th day of July, 1881.
