2 Claims.

The present invention relates to improvements in baby carriages and, more specifically, to a new and improved bird-shaped baby carriage with folding seats.

One object of the present invention is the provision of a carriage of the character described which permits one child, or two children, to lay therein on a mattress or to sit on one or two foldable chairs in elevated, comfortable position enabling the child to look out of the carriage without straining his body.

Another object of the present invention is the provision of a carriageof the character described which is provided with adjustable lateral windshields or fan-shaped members for protecting the` child against draft and the like.

Still another object of the present invention is the provision of a carriage of the character described which is provided with an upwardly extending front portion, so-'that a child when standing in the carriage-as older infants frequently do-can hold on to said front portion or/ and to the aforementioned fan-shaped members.

A further object of the present invention is the provision of a carriage of the character described which is shaped partially as a large bird, preferably as a swan, whose wings constitute said fan-Shaped members and whose neck constitutes said upwardly extending front portion, thus Inaking these utilitarian parts appear primarily as ornamental parts.

Still a further object of the present invention is the provision of a carriage of the character described which is provided with new resilient means that appear as the feet of said bird.

Yet still another object of the present invention is the provision of a carriage of the character described which is comparatively simple in construction and light in weight, but which is also of a pleasing outer appearance, roomy, durable, sturdy, and well adapted for withstanding the rough usage to which devices of this type frequently are subjected.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

In the accompanying drawing a preferred form of the invention has been shown.

In the drawing the numeral 2 is a hollow body, which preferably is shaped like the trunk of a bird, and the numeral 4 denotes a chassis member which is carried by wheels 6 that rotate about a pair of axes 8. The numeral Ill denotes angularly bent leg portions which are gradually reduced in thickness towards their lower extremities being extended downwardly from the lower portion of the body 2 and having their thin lower ends secured to the chassis 4. The body 2 and the leg portions IIJ can be made of plastic material, hard rubber, wood, sheet metal, or of any other suitable material having a certain degree of resiliency, so that the leg portions Iii will act like springs interposed between the chassis 4 and the body 2.

To the outer side of the rear portion I2 of the body 2 there is secured any suitable push handle member, consisting for instance of a pair of bars I4 through whose upper ends is extended a hori- Zontal rod I 6. Small figures I8 of birds, to match the body 2, preferably are secured to both extremities of the rod I6.

The numeral 2E! denotes a pair of vertical fanshaped members simulating wings of a bird being pivotally attached to opposite side portions of said body 2 at 2|. The position of the members 2E) relative to the body 2 can be adjusted by turn ing them around the pivots 2 I, so that one or both members 2i] will laterally protrude more or less beyond the open top portion of the body 2. In this way the members 2e can be used as lateral windshields for protecting the occupant of the carriage against draft or the like. The hollow neck portion 22 can be utilized for storing therein towels, an umbrella, or the like, and it permits a child standing in the carriage to hold on to the portion 22. The main section of the top portion of the body 2 is open and provided with rounded edges 24.

One seat or two seats 25 (two seats 26 being e shown in the present instance), towhich are pivotally connected back rests 28, are supported by foldable legs 36, 32, 34 and 36. Said legs are held in upright position by any suitable means, for instance by means of cross bars 38 and 40. The inner side of the curved bottom portion of the hollow body 2 is provided with two straight, towards each other inclined base sections 42 and,

44. The sections 42 and 44 are in spaced relation to one another, and each of said sections is provided with two pairs of lugs. To the lugs on the section 42 there are pivotally secured the parts 30, 32 and 38, while to the lugs on the section 44 there are pivotally secured the parts 34, 36 and 40. A pin is laterally extended from the upper ends of each one of the legs 32 and 36, and each of the cross bars 38 and 4G has at 45 in its upper portion an open slot which is` right angularly disposed to the longitudinal axis of the cross bar and adapted for detachably engaging one of said pins, so that the seats will be held safely in the position shown in`Figure 2 in dotted lines. If both seats are collapsed, as may be seen in Figure 3, a-mattress 46 can be placed into the body 2, so that a'child, orl two children side by side, can lay thereon as -in an ordinary baby carriage.

Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

t is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specic features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:

1. A device of the character described comprising a bird-shaped carriage body which has a hollow main portion that is open at its top and whose curved bottom portion is provided with straight base sections from which lugs are upwardly extended into said body, angularly bent leg portions which are gradually reduced in 'thickness towards their lower extremities being extended downwardly from the lower portion of said body, a chassis having four wheels and having the lower extremities of said leg portions attached toits upper side, a pair of vertical fanshaped members simulating Wings of a bird being pivotally attached to opposite side portions of said body, the lower portions of a pair of collapsible chairs being pivotally connected to the lugs on the base sections of the bottom portion of said body, and a push handle member being secured to the upper outer portion of said body.

A baby carriage comprising a bird-shaped carriage body which has a hollow neck portion and a hollow main portion that is Open at its top and whose curved bottom portion is provided with two even towards each other inclined base sections which are in spaced relation to one another, two pairs of lugs being secured to each of said base sections and being upwardly extended into said body, angularly bent leg portions which are-gradually reduced in thickness toward their lower 'extremities being extended downwardly from the lower portion of said body, a chassis having ourwheels and having the lower extremities of said leg portions attached to its upper ide, a pair of vertical fan-shaped members simulating wings of a bird being pivotally attached to opposite side portions ofsaidbody, a bar being with its lower end pivotally secured to each'lug, a pair of horizontal seat panels within said body. being in spaced relation to theinnersides ofl said body and each panel having the lipperends of four of said bars pivotally secured to its lower side, a back rest being tiltably secured to ariV edge portion of each seat panel, pins being laterally extended from the upper portions of two of said bars beneath each seat panel, two pairs of cross oars of which each pair has its lower ends tiltably secured to one of said two base sections'at that edge portion of the base section whichriswcloseA to the other base section and each of saidcross' bars having in its upper portion an lopen slot which is right angularly disposed to the longitudinal axis of the cross bar and adapted fordetachably engaging one ofY said pins, and a push handle member being-secured to the upperouter portion of said body. f v EvELYN DORE.
