SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,467, dated February '7, 1882. Application filedMay 26,1 81. (Model) To all 'tthum it may concern:

Be itknown that I, JOHN HENRY WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey,have invented anew and useful Improvementin Stud and Gulf-Button Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

My improvement consists, first, of an extenconsisting of two posts, one sliding inside of the other, but so constructed as when open to prevent separation and when closed to remain so closed until it is necessaryto remove the button, and,-second, of aback connected to the post by rings, so as to turn freely at any angle with the post.

The advantages of my improvement are, first, the stud or button will sit snugly and tightly; second, the two posts forming the extension-post bein g inseparable, neither part of the stud or button can be lost or mislaid, but are-always together; and, third, the back, be-

ing connected with the post by rings, will turn in any angle with. the post, thereby obviating all annoyance and lossot' time caused by having to search for the proper angle to which to turn the back in order to remove the button, and enabling the button to adjustitsclf to any position without strain or difljculty.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Fig. 2 represents the button extended ready to be put into the cuff. a is the outside post; b, the inside post, D, the back, and G O the connecting-rings one attached to inside post, I), and one to back D. The back D is pushed through the button-hole, then turned at right angles with the post, and the posts pushed together, fastening and holding the cuff securely.

Fig. v3 represents outside and inside posts. 0 is the upper end of outside post, a, which is flanged or widened from the inside.

Fig. 4 represents inside post,'b, which is split down the center and spread apart, thusproducing, when compressed, a spring which compels the shoulders f f to shoot into the flanged or upper end, 6, of the outside post when the button is closed, thus keeping it secure.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new, to be secured by Letters Patent- An improved button or stud provided with an extensible post consisting of an outer cylindrical portion and an inner sliding and inseparable portion, in combination with a back flexibly connected to the inner sliding portion,
