Projecting downwardly from the trailing end of the portion 6 is a heel 10 which follows the cut- 45 ting edge and finishes the out made thereby,
Depending downwardly from the leading end of the plate I is a cylindrical pilot block I I, provided at the leading end thereof with a semi-spherical nose I2. This block is in longitudinal alignment 5() with the afore-mentioned cylindrical portion 6 and the lowermost extremity l3 thereof is positioned somewhat above the lower extremity of the cutting edge 9, as is illustrated by the reference numeral M in the accompanying Figure 1.

When the invention is placed in operation, the depth of cut being taken will be approximately equal to the dimension indicated by the numeral I4 and the greater portion of the cutting force will be concentrated in a downward direction against the floor 16 of the out. A smaller portion of the force will be equally distributed along the arcuate sides of the cutting edge, and by virtue of this equal distribution of the cutting force, the cutting section will be urged in a straight line along its intended course.
The sawdust removed during the cutting operation will be disposed of by passing upwardly through the bore I, thereby preventing the clogging of the saw which was frequently experienced in conventional practice as a result of excessive accumulation of sawdust in the cut.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A cutting section for chain saws comprising; in combination, a plate adapted for insertion between the links of a chain, a cylindrical portion on said plate and having a part projecting in the direction in which the saw is to travel, said portion having an upwardly inclined chip clearance passageway formed centrally and longitudinally therein, an arcuate cutting edge on said cylindrical portion at the end of said passageway adjacent said projecting part, a pilot block on the end of said plate in advance of said cutting edge, and a downwardly extending heel at the trailing end of said cylindrical portion.
2. A cutting section for chain saws comprising, in combination, a plate adapted to constitute one of the links of a chain and formed with a plurality of transverse apertures to receive the cross pins of the immediately adjacent links, a cylindrical portion at the trailing end of said plate with said chain, the longitudinal axis of said portion inclining from the leading end thereof, said portionhaving a longitudinally extending axial bore, an arcuate cutting edge at the forward end of said cylindrical portion, a heel at the trailing end of said cylindrical portion, a cylindrical pilot block secured to the leading end of said plate, and a semi-spherical nose at the leading end of said block, said block and heel being in the same plane with said cylindrical portion, the pilot block extending to a plane spaced beyond a parallel plane including outer edge portions of the cylindrical portion and heel.
3. A cutting section for a chain saw comprising a generally U-shaped substantially flat plate having a bight portion and arms, means in the bight portion for connecting the section to and between links in a chain, a pilot block on the end of the arm disposed in the direction the section is to travel, a hollow cylindrical portion on the end of the other arm, and a heel on the trailing end portion of said cylindrical portion, said cylindrical portion having a sharpened leadin edge, the extremities of said guide block and cylindrical portion and heel remote from said bight portion being substantially co-planar with the sharpened edge projecting slightly beyond and between the extremities of said guide block and heel.
4. A cutting section for chain saws comprising, in combination, a body adapted for connection to a chain a chip clearance hollow cylinder in said body, an arcuate cutting edge at the leading end of said cylinder, and means for guiding said edge and governing the depth of cut thereof, said means comprising a pilot block connected to said body in advance of said cutting edge, and a downwardly extending heel at the trailing end of said cylinder and behind said cutting edge.
5. A cutting section for chain saws comprising, in combination, a vertically disposed plate adapted to constitute one of the links of a chain, a cylindrical portion at the trailing end of said plate as placed in a chain saw, said portion having a longitudinally extending chip clearance bore formed centrally therein, a chamfered portion at the leading end of said bore forming an arcuate cutting edge, and means for guiding said edge and governing the depth of a cut made by the cutting edge comprising a, heel at the trailing end of said cylindrical portion, a pilot block having a curved surface and secured to the leading end of said plate, and a nose having a curved surface at the leading end of said plate, said block and said cylindrical portion and said nose being all on one side of a chain wherewith the device is used.
