Description

Patented Dec. 1.9; 1950 LAolv-Friso STATES PTEN T --0F F ICE FLOATING OTTOMAN Emmett `C. Burden, Lansing,-Mich.
Application April 30, 1949,v Serial No. 90;? 13
1 Claim. (Cl. 155-165) This `invention relates' to furniture, is particularlyconcerned with foot rests, is 4more particularly concerned with Ottomans, and is most particularly concerned with a floating ottoman which is used most advantageously for resting of an individuals feet during the use of a rocking chair.
In the prior art there are various types of furniture which can be classiiied as falling in the category of foot rests. The ottoman is the most popular type of foot rest which has hitherto been available, and the conventional type of ottoman is quite convenient for use with a stationary chair but it is not at all useful for resting the individuals feet when the individual is using a rocking chair. For example, when the ottoman is stationary, the individual resting his feet thereon will experience a dragging of his feet along the top of the ottoman, while his body is being moved to and fro on the rocker. There are also other disadvantages inthe use of conventional otto mans.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an ottoman. A still further object of this invention is the provision of a iioating ottoman. It is a further object to provide a floating ottoman of extremely sturdy construction. It is a still further object to provide a floating ottoman having ease of a to and fro movement. It is a further object of this invention to provide a floati ing ottoman of simple construction and having utility heretofore not present in conventional Ottomans.
I have now discovered and invented an ottoman comprising a pair of elongated base supports, a pair of cylindrical cross braces, the said base supports being connected by the said cylindrical cross braces, a plurality of long vertical spindles, a pair of cross members, the said vertical spindles disposed between one of the said base supports and one of the said cross members, an upholstered cushion, two pairs of vertical supports, each of the said vertical supports being secured to the said cushion and extending downwardly therefrom, a pair of top supports, two pairs of hangers, each of the said hangers being swingably attached to one end of one of the said top supports at its upper end, and each of the said hangers being swingably attached to one of the said vertical supports, a pair of separator bars, and each of the said separator bars being connected at its ends to a pair of opposed hangers, and I am now able to avoid the disadvantages of the prior art and am able readily to accomplish the objects set forth.
`While some of thefmore outstanding features, and advantages of this invention Shave been hereinbefore set forth, others will become apparent from the following disclosures, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the ottoman of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a right side view of the same.
The two base supports I are parallel to each other and are sufficiently longer than the length of the upholstered cushion I4 to give proper support to the ottoman. The pair of cylindrical cross braces 2 connect the two base supports, are parallel to each other, and are substantially perpendicular to the said base supports. A plurality of long vertical spindles 3a connect the base supports I, and the pair of top supports 3, and the top supports 3 are supported upon the vertical spindles 3a. A pair of cylindrical top cross braces 4 connect and reinforce the two top supports 3. The hangers 5 are suspended, and swingably held to the ends of the said top supports 3, by means of the pins 1. Each pair of the said hangers is connected by a cylindrical separator bar 6, and the bottom portion of the hangers are swingably attached substantially to the bottom of the vertical supports III by means of the pins 8. Each pair of the vertical supports I are connected by a cross brace 6a. The separator bar 6 is secured at each end to each of the two hangers by means of the two bolts 9. The pair of vertical supports on each side of the ottoman are connected by the cross member Illa. A plurality of short vertical spindles Ib connect each side of the frame of the cushion and the two cross members Ia. The two supports I2 provide support for the springs I3, which springs support the upholstery of the ottoman.
In the use of the ottoman of my invention the feet of the individual are placed on the cushion I4 of the ottoman and the Vbody of the individual is reposed on a conventional rocker (not shown). A rocking motion is obtained by bracing the feet against the surface of the cushion of the ottoman, and the rocking of the rocker, and the to and fro motion of the floating ottoman is continued at the same rate. I wish to point out that once the rocking motion is under way, the entire body of the individual, including his legs and his feet are moved to and fro with little effort and without the conventional friction accompanying the use of a conventional stationary ottoman.
Although I have found that it is not necessary, I do nd it useful to provide the swngable por-` tions of my invention with ball or roller bearings, since this prevents excessive friction and allows for a smoother movement of the ottoman.
Having clearly set forth the construction, utility and advantages of my invention I wish particularly to state that it will be apparent that changes in the details of the construction and arrangement of the various members of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A floating foot rest comprising a pair of elongated base supports, a pair of cylindrical cross braces, the said base supports being connected by the said cylindrical cross braces, a plurality of long vertical spindles, a pair of cross members, a pair of top supports, the said vertical spindles disposed between one of the said base supports and one of the said top supports, an upholstered cushion, two pairs of vertical supports, each of the said vertical supports being secured to the 4 said cushion and extending downwardly therefrom, two pairs of hangers, each of the said hangers being swingably attached to one end of one of the said top supports at its upper end, and each of the said hangers being swingably at tached to one of the said vertical supports, a pair of separator bars, and each of the said separator bars being connected at its ends to a pair of opposed hangers.
