SEAL-LOCK.
.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,388, dated February 7, 1882. Application filed August 31, 1881. (No model.)
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCISCO P. IANNA- RQNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington city, District ot'Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Packing-Boxes, of which the following,lr is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in packing-boxes, and more particularly to that class 'known and used as coii or shipping boxes. y
The object ot' my invention is to obtain positive security against accidental or fraudulent My invention further consists in the details of construction hereinafter fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In order thatothers skilled in the art may know how to make and use my invention, I
will proceed to describe the construction and` operation of the same, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a bottom plan view of the lid or cover of my improved box, showing a threebolt lock and independent catch-bar. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal and vertical section through a boxembodying myinvention. Fig.3 represen ts a bottom view of the covering-plate which conceals the key-entrance to the lock proper. Fig. 4 is a plan or top view of the central cap-plate of the lock with the coveringplate removed. Fig. 5- is a plan view ot' the lock, exposing the bolts and bolt-operating mechanism. Fig. 6 is a central section taken horizontally through Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a side or edge view ofthe cap-plate shown at Fig. 4; and Fig. 8 is a section taken at line a: w, Fig. 4..

A represents la rectangular wooden box., which preferably has arranged centrally and at right angles to each other two countersunk strengthening iron bands, BB, near the upper ends of which are provided boltholes or openings, through which theloclebolts pass. These bands are secured by screws C, and hold the sides, bottom, and ends of the box securely in place. D is the top, which israbbcted around the edges to permit the lock-bolts to move in aplane below the top edges ofthe boxand guard them against attack from the outside.
At the center otl the cover or top of the box, on the inside,is arranged thelock-case E, which is secured in place by screws F, or in any other suitable manner.
The lock shown consists of three radiating bolts, the inner ends of which are provided with rack-teeth mes-hing with a centrally-arranged pinion adapted to be operated by an ordinary key.
The top of the box is mortised or cut away over said lock to receive the hub G of capplate H, through which pass two or more screws, I', the threads of which pass into the top plate ofthe lock-case E, and thus hold the cap-plate in position. This cap-plate is provided with a key-hole, J, to permit the pas sage of the key tov the lock below; and it is furnished also with another key-hole, K, arranged within which is a post, L, secured to a bracket, M, on the under side of the plate.
N and O are two rectangular openings in 'said plate to receive hooks secured to the under side ot' a guard-plate presently' described.
Arranged underneath the opening N is a spring-latch, P, and in line with and slightly behind the opening O is arranged a ilat spring, Q, one end riveted to the under side of plate, F, and the other provided with a stud, R,'which passes through an orifice in the plate H, and in its normal position projects slightly above the same.
On each side ofthe key-hole K are arranged two or more sharpened studs or points, S, adapted to pierce and hold stationary a paper or other puncturable seal.
The cap-plate is formed with an annular rim, T, which is designed to come flush with the top of the box and high enough to receive within IOC it a guard-plate, U, having a key-hole, V, corresponding with the key-hole K in the capplate, and two hooks, a b. Each side of the key-hole, V, are two depressions, c c, adapted 5to receive the points S S. The plate Uis placed in position by passing the hook a through the opening O and under the plate H, and then, by pressing on the opposite side of the guard-plate, forcing the beveled hook b under the spring-latch P. The key-holes K V are arranged to one side ot' the spring-latch I), and the latter is adapted to be operated by a suitable key. Before placing the guardplate in position a paper or other easily-punct. ured seal is placed over the hole K, and the points S S caused to penetrate and hold the same against lateral movement, so that when the plate U is latched in place it cannot be removed except by the withdrawal ot' the latch by a key, the entrance ot' which must destroy the seal.
The seals used may bc in triplicateone furnished with the bill ot' lading, one placed under the guard-plate, and one kept with the stub or inclosed in the box; but in this particular any predetermined system may be adopted.
To remove the guard-plate a key is forced through the seal under the key-hole V, and by turning the key the spring-latch P is Withdrawn from the hook b, and when the hook is released the spring-stud R forces the plate upward sufficiently far for it to be grasped to withdraw the hook a, from its seat, when the plate may be entirely removed, thuseXposiug dthe cap-plate over the lock, and through which cap-plate the lock may be operated.
The box may or may not be furnished with any suitable grasps or handles.
I do not Wish to confine myself to any special feature of construction in the lock proper or the number of bolts used, as any character of lock mechanism may be used, the gist of my invention in this particular resting in the idea of providing the lock with acap-plate, access to which is obtained only by the removal of a guard-plate.
What I claim as new, and by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the lock secured on the under side ot' the lid of the box, and a capplate having a key-hole through Which the lockoperating key is passed, a concealing guardplate,U, provided with a key-hole, V, o'ut ot' register with the key-hole of the lock and adapted to receive a diierent key, so that the guard-plate must be unlocked and removed before access can be had to the key-hole of the lock, substantially as hereinbet'ore set forth.
2. In combination with the plate H, provided with openings N O and latch l?, and the guardplate U, provided with hooks a b, the springstud R, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
