BEDPAN ATTACHMENT Filed Nov. 16, 1945 VIOLET J. DELlSl, AND
PHlLflP 051.151,
Patented Dec. 12, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BEDPAN ATTACHMENT Violet J. Delisi and Philip Delisi, Lemont, Ill.
Application November 16, 1945, Serial No. 629,064
2 Claims.
1 The present invention relates to bed-pan attachments and is more particularly concerned with an attachment of the kind referred to, for
' baby cribs and bassinets.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the character referred to, to prevent bed-Wetting by infants.
Another object of the invention is to provide such an attachment with means for draining oil urine which would otherwise accumulate on the mattress 01' a rubber sheet cover, usually employed in cribs and bassinets.
A further object of the invention is to provide such attachment with a detachable vessel to catch the urine as it drains ofi the mattress.
With the foregoing and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention, in operative position.
Figure 2 is a transverse section thereof.
Figure 3 is a detail plan view of the drain pipe clamp.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation of the urine catch-basin holder.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the mattress.
Like numerals are employed in the description and drawing to designate like parts of construction.
I represents the frame of any conventional baby-crib and 2 a mattress therefor which is specially designed with a vertical aperture 3 located at a suitable point in the middle, about one-third the distance from one end thereof.
The top of the mattress is provided with a removable, rubberized cover 4, with tie cords or tapes 5 at each corner for attachment to crib frame I.
Cover 4 is provided with an aperture 5 which registers with the aperture in the underlying mattress and has secured to its underside a rubber drain tube 1, which is suitably flared where attached to rubberized sheet 4. At its lower extremity the tube is provided with a rubber collar 8, or other suitable weight serving to hold the drain tube in a substantially perpendicular line and extended.
The drain tube 1 empties into a removable catch vessel 9 of any suitable material and design. This vessel is normally attached to collar 8 by means of a spring wire clamp iii, having an annular portion, which is open at one point on its perimeter, as at II. This permits the annular part to be clamped under the rim of an ordinary urine container, or vessel. The attachment I B is formed across its top center, from the opening H, with convergent, horizontally disposed arms, terminating in a loop [2 serving as a spring. Centrally the two arms are: semicircular to form a clamp opening I3 adapted to encircle the drain tube and maintain it in proper position with relation to vessel 9. A pivotal fastener M is secured on one arm of the clamp and removably engages the other arm to hold the clamp in close relation with tube 1.
A vessel rack I5 is supported on the under side of the mattress and at a suitable distance therefrom by means of depending curved hangers i6. strips of flexible material fastened at their upper extremities to the bed frame by screw-bolts and nuts, as at IT.
The vessel rack is preferably a rectangular frame, two opposite sides of which are interiorly grooved horizontally as at l8, for the reception of the rim of the vessel. A lateral side: I9, is hinged to the end of one grooved side, as at 2%. and provided with a hook 2| which engages an eye 22 on the end of the opposite, grooved side, thus forming a gate or closure to contain the vessel.
This invention will, if desirable, obviate the use of diapers. It is also calculated to prevent diaper rash and colds usually caused by Wet infant clothing. The rubberized mattress sheet or cover is always drained of urine and thus no pools can accumulate.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with a bedstead having a mattress provided with a drain opening and having a urine receptacle supporting rack beneath said drain opening with a urine receptacle on said rack having a laterally projecting rim, a drain tube depending from said opening into said receptacle having an external enlargement on its lower end, and means acting to center said tube with respect to said receptacle and hold said tube down in position within said receptacle, said means comprising an open spring ring arranged to encircle said receptacle beneath and engage the underside of said rim, said ring terminating at its ends in chordal arms extending thereacross and normally sprung apart to receive said drain tube therebetween above said external enlargement, and clamping means encircling said arms for contracting said ring upon said receptacle and said arms against opposite sides of said drain tube.
. 2. The combination with a bedstead having a mattress provided with a drain opening and having a urine receptacle supporting rack beneath said drain opening with a urine receptacle on said rack having a laterally projecting rim, a drain tube depending from said opening into said receptaclehaving an external enlargement on its lower end, and means acting to center said tube with respect to said receptacle and hold said tube down in position within said receptacle, said means comprising an open spring ring arranged to encircle said receptacle beneath and engage the underside of said rim, said ring terminating at its ends in chordal arms extending thereacross and normally sprung apart to receive said drain tube therebetween above said external enlargement, and clamping means encircling said arms for contracting said ring upon said receptacle and said arms against opposite sides of said drain tube, said clamping means being operable along said arms to a position in which said ring can expand sufficiently for free removal of said ring from said receptacle.
