To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, HENRY H. MESSENGER, of Harveys, in the county of Greene and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Road Scraper and Scoop; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form'a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a rear view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, of my improved road-scraper. Fig. 4 is a top view; and Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line :10 m, Fig. 4.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.

This invention relates to machines for scraping and leveling roads and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which willbehereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A repre-,

sents the frame of the machine, which consists of a pair of horizontal transverse beams, B, connected by longitudinal cross-pieces O, and provided at the ends with downward-projecting legs D, to which is secured the shield E of the scoop or scraper F, which is hinged to the lower edge of said shield.

Upon the rear side of shield E are formed bearings for a pair of standards, G, carrying plow-blades H, (right and lefthand, respectively,) which serve as guards, and one or both of which may be thrown into operation at the same time, suitable means being provided for the vertical adjustment of the shanks or standards.

I is a shaft, arranged in suitable bearings transversely under the main frame, and having downward-projecting arms or cranks J, connected by pivoted rods K with arms L, extending upward from the rear side of the hinged scoop or scraper F. Said shaft I is also provided with an upward-extendin g arm or lever, M, having a pawl, N, engaging a segmental rack or ratchet, 0, so as to retain the said shaft in any desired position, and consequently the scoop or scraper in-any" position to which it may be adjusted in relation to the shield E.

P P are a pair of legs vertically adjustable upon the rear side of shield E, and having swiveled wheels Q. The said legs are adjustable by means of suitable levers, B, having stop-pawls of an y well-known construction, and secured upon shafts U U, capable of being connected by a sleeve 0r coupling, V, so that the wheel-carrying legs may be operated or adjusted simultaneously by operating one of the operating-levers while the pawl of the other is disengaged from the holding-ratchet.

The tongue vW and the seat-bar X are pivoted upon a-bolt, Y, centrally to thefront framebar, B. The tongue is provided with a springlock, Z, operated by a foot-lever, A, and capable of engaging any one of a series of perforations, B, in a segmental bracket, 0, secured to the front frame-beam, as shown. The seatbar moves independently of the tongue, and may be conveniently adjusted.

D is a lever pivoted at E, and having a footpiece, F, by which it may be operated. The rear end of said lever is connected to one of the shafts U, as shown in Fig. 4, thus enabling said shaft to be moved laterally and connected with or disconnected from the other shaft U through the medium of the sleeve or coupling V.

The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed.

By adjusting the hinged scraper at an angle to the shield the machine is made to serve as a scoop, which, by changing the direction of draft, will deposit the accumulated dirt at either side of the road.

In constructing hillside roadstheadjustable wheel-carrying legs are serviceable, and the advantage of being able to adjust both simultaneously is obvious. plows ditches or drains may be conveniently constructed on either or both sides of the road.
