Description

Dec. 5, 1950 1. COHN 2,532,835
SOUND PRODUCING TOY PINWHEEL Filed May 5, 1946 INVENTOR.
Patented Dec. 5, 1950 SOUND-PRODUCING TOY PIN WHEEL Irwin Cohn, Leominster, Mass.
Application May 3, 1946, Serial No. 667,151
1 Claim.
The object of the present invention is to provide a pin wheel device, which, in its actuation, will produce a sound simulating that of an airplane in flight. In other words, the sound produced may be similar to the action of the propelling blades of an aircraft engine in the air when the aircraft is in flight.
The specific object of the invention is to provide such a device which will be very simple in construction and at the same time of attractive form.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing an embodiment of the invention; and
Figure 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
In the construction of my sound producing pin wheel, I utilize two hemispheres, preferably of light plastic, which plastic may be opaque in color or may be transparent, as desired. A characteristic of my invention is that the center area of the pin wheel proper is utilized as both a connecting and separating member for the two hemispheres. Also, one of the hemispheres immediately carries one or more vibratory sound producing blades which co-act with a fixed ratchet carried by a shaft which in turn is provided with a handle.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the primary pin wheel member is formed from a sheet of plastic or other suitable material, having a central annular member I and projecting blades 2. This central annular member may, if desired, be cut out at its center. This is unnecessary, however, and I prefer that the center be of disk-like form, and that its diameter be slightly greater than the diameter of the hemispheres.
The hemisphere 3 has its peripheral margin abutted with member I and cemented thereto. Hemisphere 3, in the present embodiment, carries two relatively stiff blades or vibratory members 4, and these members may be cemented or otherwise secured to the interior wall of said hemisphere 3. These blades or vibratory members are actuated by a ratchet wheel 4x or other suitable form of striker adapted to flex and release the vibratory members 4 a plurality of times in each rotation of the pin wheel proper. The ratchet wheel 43: is fixed to a shaft 5, which shaft in turn is extended as an axial member of a handle 6.
Secured to the side of member I opposite that of hemisphere 3 is a second hemisphere l, and shaft 5 runs through both hemispheres and is headed at 5x outside of hemisphere l.
The blades 2 of the pin wheel proper are so formed that when struck with a forward blast of air, or when the device is rapidly moved through motionless air, the blades with their spherical carriers composed of hemispheres 3 and 7 will rotate in the direction of the arrow, Figure 2. As the vibratory members it are drawn over the ratchet wheel 4x, the desired sound will be produced.
It will be understood that the teeth or projections of the ratchet wheel which are engaged by the stiff, but vibratory blades 5, may be of any desirable form, that the blades 4 may be constructed of any suitable material, and that various changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the elements without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent being as follows:
A sound producing pin wheel comprising a blade member formed of a sheet of material having a central disk-like area and a plurality of blades extending radially therefrom, said blades being of substantially equal area to provide a balanced assembly two hemi-spherieal members, each member having its' periphery secured to one side of said annular central member of the pin wheel, a shaft extending through the sphere formed by the two hemi-spherical members and the intermediate disk-like area of the pin wheel, a ratchet on said shaft and a vibratory blade member carried interiorly of one of said hemispheres and engaging the periphery of the ratchet.
