7 Claims. (Cl. Z55-51) This invention relates to a drilling machine, and an object of the invention is to provide improved electrical remote control means for a drilling machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drilling machine in which an electric motor drives the truck or main frame thereof through traction means and also drives the pump of a hydraulic system for adjusting drilling mechanism mounted on a boom, there being disengageable drive gearing between the electric motor and the traction means of the truck or main frame which will disable the electric circuit for the driving motor and/or for the motor of the drilling mechanism whenever the disengageable gearing is in its engaged position, thereby precluding accidental driving of the traction mechanism simultaneously with operation of the drill.
Another object of the invention is to provide apparatus of the above mentioned character in which the driving motor for the truck or main frame also drives a hydraulic pump which is part of a hydraulic system for adjusting the drill mechanism through hydraulic motors carried by said drill mechanism.
Still another object of the invention is to prol vide apparatus having the above mentioned characteristics in which the drill mechanism is mounted on a boom which extends beyond the machine truck or main frame and in which con-- trol switches, such as push buttons, are carried by the boom for controlling the electrical system.
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter, the novel features and combinations thereof being set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a drilling machine incorporating the features of my invention, certain parts being omitted;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of said machine;
Fig. 3 is an electrical wiring diagram of the machine; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view showing' at each end of the mainframe I0, said wheels being adapted to ride on rails, one of which is seen at I2. The main frame carries an electric motor I3 which is interconnected with the traction wheels II through a disengageable drive gearing I4, parts of which are illustrated in detail in Fig. 4 of the drawings. Of particular signicance, insofar as the invention herein claimed is concerned, is the fact that drive gearing I4 includes a jaw clutch I5 provided with an operating lever I6 which may be operated to effeet a driving or non-'driving relation between the motor I3 and traction wheels II.
The operating lever I6 carries a cam I'l which controls a switch I8 of the electric circuit hereinafter described in detail. The arrangement of parts is such that whenever the clutch I5 is engaged switch I8 is open, and when it is disengaged said switch is closed. In Fig. 4 of the drawings the clutch I5 is illustrated in its disengaged position and cam I7 has actuated switch I3 to its closed position. The opposite relation between the cam I'I and switch I8 is illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings in which the clutch I5 is engaged.
Pivotally mounted for swinging movement about an upright axis is a substantially horizontally extending boom I9 which extends appreciably beyond the main frame or truck I. This boom may be swung to various positions by hydraulic motor mechanism 2B which is disclosed in detail in my application Serial No. 769,358. Adjacent its outer end the boom I9 carries a drill mechanism 2I which is also disclosed in detail in my application Serial No. 769,358. It is suiiicient for the invention here disclosed and claimed t0 point out that said drill mechanism 2| in.- cludes an electric motor 22 (see Fig. 3) mounted in a motor housing 23 and that said drill mechanism 2I includes various adjusting devices each operated by a hydraulic motor. For example, the drilling mechanism 2| may be swung about a vertical or upright axis by drive mechanism including hydraulic motor 24. The drill may be raised and lowered by hydraulic cylinder type t motors 25. In addition, a hydraulic motor 25 is provided to swing the drill mechanism about the longitudinal axis of a supporting neck 21.
The hydraulic system which includes the hydraulic motors 24, 25 and 26 also includes a pump 28 which is directly and permanently connected to the electric motor I3. Control valves, designated generally by the reference character 29, provide for control of the various hydraulic motors 24, 25 and 2S as Well as the hydraulic motor for mechanism 20, ali of which are disclosed comthis happens the lower contact thereof closes an obvious circuit to shunt the resistor 4'I, and the upper contact closes a circuit which shunts out resistor 39 entirely. This shunt circuit extends from the right-hand end of resistor l39 over conductors 49 and 5D, the latter leading to the second stationary contact of controller 30 which is directly connected to the second stationary contact of the upper row of stationary contacts of reversing switch 3 I. second contacts of the controller 38 are directly connected together over conductors 38, 49 and 56 which obviously has exactly the same result as moving the controller drum 3o into its fourth position.
Normally only one of the push buttons 32, 33 will be operated because it is normally desirable rst to position the drilling mechanism and then when positioned to operate its driving motor to drill a hole. Also the switches 32 and 33 are preferably push button type, making it impossible for the operator to leave his position while the mechanism is running. It is obvious, however, that within certain broad aspects of the invention either or both of these switches 32 or 33 may be snap switches, or the like, which will remain closed.
It is further obvious from the above traced circuits that whenever the driving -connection is effected between the motor I3 and the wheels I I, switch I8 will open the circuits leading to relays 45, 48 and 5 I.
Obviously those skilled in the art may make various changes in the details and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as deiined by the claims hereto appended, and I therefore wish not to be restricted to the precise construction herein disclosed.
Having thus described and shown an embodiment of my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A drilling machine including a main frame, traction means for propelling said main frame, a driving motor for said main frame, disengageable gearing interconnecting said motor and traction means, a boom carried by said main frame and extending therefrom, drilling mechanism mounted on said boom, a hydraulic system for controlling said drilling mechanism including a pump directly connected to said driving motor and a hydraulic motor for operating said drilling mechanism, and control means for starting and stopping said driving motor including a switch operable to disable said control means when said disengageable gearing is engaged, said control means also including switch means located on said boom for starting said driving motor.
2. A drilling machine including a main frame, traction means for propelling said main frame, a driving motor for said main frame, disengageable gearing interconnecting said motor and traction means, a boom carried by said main frame and extending therefrom, drilling mechanism mounted on said boom, a hydraulic system for controlling said drilling mechanism including In other words, the first and i a pump directly connected to said driving motor and a hydraulic motor for operating said drilling mechanism, and control means for starting and stopping said driving motor including a switch operable to disable said control means when said disengageable gearing is engaged, said control means also including switch means located near said drilling mechanism for starting said driving motor.
3. A drilling machine inciuding a frame, traction means therefor, means for driving said traction means including an electric motor on said frame, disengageable drive gearing interconnecting said traction means and said motor, a boom carried by and extending beyond said frame, drill mechanism carried by said boom, said drill mechanism including an electric driving motor, hydraulic mechanism for adjusting said drill mechanism including a pump driven by said iirst named electric motor and hydraulic motor means for said drill mechanism, and an electrical control system for said 'two electric v:motors including a switch operable by said disengageable drive gearing for disabling said system and separate switch means for said motors mounted on said boom.
4. A drilling machine including a frame, traction means therefor, means for driving said traction means including an electric motor on said frame, disengageable drive gearing interconnecting said traction means and said motor, a boom carried by and extending beyond said frame, drill mechanism carried by said boom, said drill mechanism including an electric driving motor, hydraulic mechanism for adjusting said drill mechanism including a pump driven by said rst named electric motor and hydraulic motor means for said drill mechanism, and an electrical control system for said two electric motors including a switch operable by said disengageable drive gearor disabling said system and separate switch means for said motors. A drilling machine including a frame, traction means therefor, means for driving said traction means including an electric motor on said frame, disengagcable drive gearing interconnecting said traction means and said motor, a boom carried by and extending beyond said frame, drill mechanism carried by said boom, said drill mechanism including an electric driving motor, and an electrical control system for said two electric motors including a switch operable by said disengageable drive gearing for disabling said system and separate switch means for said motors mounted on said boom.

A drilling machine including a frame, traction means therefor, means for driving said traction means including an electric motor on said frame, disengageable drive gearing interconnecting said traction means and said motor, a boom carried by and extending beyond said frame, drill mechanism carried by said boom, said drill mechanism including an electric driving motor, and an electrical control system for said two electric motors including a switch operable by said disengageable drive gearing for disabling said system and. a switch for said drill mechanism electric motor mounted on said boom.
