'My'inventionf-relates .to foldin'gtbed rests and included in the objects of .my vlinvention are:
"First, to lprovidea bedrest which attaches toa side frame of a bed, such 'as a hospital bed, and extends over the mattressso that@ patientmay s'it upright facing crosswise Lto the bed, the bed rest incorporating side arms and a lbackrest so that weakened patients kmay :practice :a seated posture with'a minimum of discomfort and with a feeling of security.
'Second, to provide a bed rest which .folds into a'ifla't package for storage and which may `be readily and quickly secured fto or removed from a bed with minimum effort von the -ipart of la nurse `or attendant.
Third, lto `provide' a bed rest which is readily adaptable t various styles ofbedstructures.
'With the above 'and other-objectsin view, `as may appear hereinafter, reference '.is directed to the accompanying drawings, 'in which:
Figure 'l is a perspective view iof-my/'foldin'g bed'rest shown in position Ion .a `bed ,thebedbeing shown fragmentarily.
"Figure `2 is an enlarged Jfragmentary lsectional view through 2-2 of Figure-'11,'showing the :manner-in ywhich the ibackV frame joins' Sto ythe side frames ofthe device. j i' 'Figure '3 is atop View .of 4my'bed rest `in fits folded position for storage.
Figur-e4 is a further enlarged lSfr'a-grrlentary sectional View through 4'4 `of'Figurel illustrate ing fthe hinged connection between 'the back lframe-and one of the side frames.
.'Figure' 5 is 'ya fragmentary sectional view through -5-5 lof 'Figure l showing one vform of attaching means for my device. Y l v `Figure y6 is a fragmentary view` similar to-Figurev 5 showing a modified form 'Yoffaittach-ing means. I'
Figure 7 is another fragmentary sectional View showing Va lfurther ymodified Tormof attaching means.
folding bed rest includes ia :pair of side frames I formed of .metal tubing-:and bentin' the form of rectangular loops. 'Three ofthe corners of each loop are rounded.. LfHoWever, :at thefourth or `forward :lower'corner the ivertical portion of the framey projects downwardly tto form-,a leg .2. This arrangement insures fa tight't 'which `doesnot workfloose.
A modiliedforrn'of foot .member designated I2 is shown in Figure 6. In this case the foot 'member is YU -s`haped, one leg of which is 'joined by a pivotal connection I3 to the extension tube '3. Theother 'leg of the U-'shaped foot 'memberextends `behind 4the vertical flange D of yan :angle member.` The first `of the pivoted legs 'receives athumbscrew I4 to engage and clamp Lthevertical flangeD.
A further modified foot designated I5 is shown in Figure '7. In this construction the foot itself is similar in form ytothefoot member l, the 'essential diierence being thatit is designed to engage the vertical flange D of an angle iron. For this'ipurpose a vertically directed :bracket I6 is provided,` which is joined vby a pivotal connection I'I 4to theextension'tube 3. The modified'foot' I5 is provided with-a hooked portion I8 atitslower' end;`which ts lunder Vthe flange 1D. . The side frames, however, pivot in the clamp brackets r25. Setscrews 21 join thetwo halves of each clamp bracket.
The vertical side bars of the back frame 2l may be bent slightly above the clamp brackets 25 so that the back frame may occupy an inclined position. A retainer strap 28 is attached to the mid-portion of the lower bar 22 and-is adapted to extend across the bed for attachment to the bedA frame opposite from the angle member B.
My folding bed rest is employed as follows:
When stored the side-frames I fold in overlapping relation as shown in Figure 3 so that the device vmay be stored in a minimum amount of To place the device on the bed the side frames are opened in parallel relation, the extension tubes adjusted to appropriate length and the clamping feet l, l2 and l5, as the case may be, are secured to the side frame of the bed. The strap 28 is drawn tight and secured to the opposite side frame of the bed. If it is inconvenient to remove the patient from the bed while placing the device in position,'the patient may be seated at one side of the bed and the device brought into position from the .opposite side of the bed by extending the side frames along either side of the patient. The clamping feet are then fastened and the retainer strap secured.
. Having fully described my invention, it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the details herein set forth, but my invention is of .the full scope of the appended claims.
