SINK WITH GARBAQE. DISPOSAL MEANS Filed Sept. 6', 1949 FIG I 3nuen.tor I VINCENT R. O'BRIEN (Ittomeg Patented Oct. 3, 1950 UNITED STATES earenr OFFICE 2,524,204 SINK WITH GARBAGE DISPOSAL MEANS Vincent R. OBrien, St. Paul, Minn.
Application September 6, 1949, Serial No. 114,200
8 Claims. 1
My invention relates to an improvementin a sink having garbage disposal means.
It is a primary object of my invention to provide a sink having two basins or sink wells with a partition or shelf formed between the same, the partition having an opening formed therein. It is an object to provide within the opening and depending therefrom a hopper adapted to receive garbage which is washed from a receptacle by means of the flow of water from a water faucet positioned over the hopper. Thus, I provide a means of storing garbage out of sight, the hopper having an enclosing lid.
It has been found that it is highly undesirable to attempt to cast or stamp from metal a sink having two basins together with a hopper integral with a partition between the sinks. Thus, my primary object is to provide a central partition which supports a hopper depending downwardly through an opening formed in thepartition dividing the sink basins. It is a further object to provide a gasket around the outer edge of the hopper which maintains a tight seal. between the flanged edge of the hopper and the surface of the shelf when the hopper is drawn downwardly by suitable bar means securing the hopper. 1
It is a further feature to provide an outlet at the bottom of the hopper which may connect with the drain outlets formed in the bottom of the sink basins. A substantial amount of garbage may be washed into the hopper, thus eliminating odors from a container placed in the sink basin. I
My hopper is adapted to receive a perforated basket into which garbage may be washed from a receptacle placed above the hopper. The remaining garbage may be further done away with by means of an electric garbage disposal secured to one of the sink drains or to the drain formed on the hopper. With my garbage disposal means. I eliminate the use of garbage receptacles positioned on the floor or within the sink basin itself.
These objects, together with other details and objects, will be more clearly and fully described in the following specifications and claims.
In the drawings forming part of the specifica-' tion:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my double compartment sink showing the opening formed in the central partition thereof.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1 with the hopper secured in position depending 2. from the opening formed in the central partition thereof. I
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the hopper removed from the sink together with a lid for the same.
Figure 4 is an enlarged section of a portion of the edge of the hopper and the edge of the partition of the sink showing the method of maintaining a seal and support between the edge of the hopper and the edge of the opening formed in the partition.
My sink A having garbage disposal means is composed of the basins I and II. Formed integral with and separating said basins l0 and II,
I provide the central partition I2 which may be either cast or .stamped integral with the-basins II] and II. The central partition l2 has formed therein the opening I3. I further provide the hopper I4 which has formed on the upper perimeter thereof a'flange I5 which is adapted to project over the edge of the opening I3 and above the surface of 'the central partition [2 when the hopper is positioned within the opening I31. The gasket I6 is positioned on the outer edge of the flange l5 to maintain a seal between the edge of the flange I5 andthe top surface of the partition I 2 when the hopper I4 is in position depending from the partition I2.
The hopper l4 has formed adjacent each end on the under side thereof, the lugs I'I into which are secured the bolts I8. The bar l9 has a hole formed in the center thereof through which is positioned the bolt I8. A nut I9 is drawn up on the bolt I8 when the bar I9 is in the position shown in Figure '1. To position and secure the bar I9, I provide holes formed in the ends thereof through which project the ends of the lugs 20 which are formed on the under surface of the basins I0 and IL. With the bars I9 in position, as shown in Figure 1, the nut I9 is drawn up on the bolt l8 thus drawing the hopper [4 downwardly so that gasket I6 makes tight contact with the surface of the partition I2 adjacent the edge of the opening I3. The bar [9 may be slightly curved to secure the hopper I4 under tension.
The basins I 0 and I I are provided with the drains 2I and 22 respectively. The hopper I4 has formed on the bottom thereof, the drain 23 which may be connected to the pipes 24 and 25 leading from the drains 2I and 22 respectively, all of which are attached to the main drain pipe 26.
I further provide the water faucet 21 which may be positioned over the hopper I4 so that water may be directed onto a receptacle having garbage adhering thereto. Thus the garbage may be washed into the hopper which may contain a perforated basket (not shown in the drawings). The faucet 2! is pivoted so that it may also be used in connection with the basins I and H.
I also provide a lid 28 adapted to set upon the top of the hopper, the depending edge of the lid 28 fitting down around the outer edge of the gasket Hi.
My sink may also consist of a single basin having a flat top portion formed on one end thereof and having formed therein an opening similar to the opening [3 through which depends a hopper such as M in the same manner as described with regard to the above mentioned double compartment sink.
Thus, I provide a double compartment sink having a garbage disposal means in the center partition thereof, the partition having a hole formed therein through which is inserted the hopper M, the edges of the hopper l4 resting on the top surface of the partition 12. A seal is made between the flanged edge of the hopper I4 and the top edge of the opening I 3 by means of the gasket 56. The hopper being secured upon the partition 12 by means of the bars l9 in position as shown in Figure 2.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
