Sr., of the city of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in the Packing of Snuls, of which the following is a specification.

In order to fully understand my invention, it may be proper to say that Scotch snuffs are usually1 pack-edili bladders, andthe filling-aperture in the bladder sealed by securing another piece of the same material over it. As the bladders have to be tightly packed it is necessary that they should be able to resist a considerable internal pressure. Beef-bladders are therefore usually employed, those of smaller animals being toothin to withstand the strain of the packing process.

The object of my invention, as hereinafter described, is t0 produce a package of sauf which will resemble those in Which beef-blad ders are used as the casing, but of much smaller size, so [hat the consumer may be able to procure at a small outlay of money a closed package similar in character to those to which he is accustomed.

Another object of my invention is to utilize a Waste product of the slaughterhouse-viz., the gullet of beeves-as the casin g for the packages.

My invention consists, rst,in a closed package of snuff, the casing of which consists ofa portion of beef-gullet with the ends contracted in size and closed by seals; and, secondly, in the process of packing or producing the said package, as hereinafter described.

In carrying ont my invention I close one end of theox-gullet and gatherthesame, which is in a moist condition, over the discharge-spout of the packing machine.- rIlhe machine is then put'in operation, when the gullet is gradually tilled and forced from the discharge-nozzle of the machine. As soon as the iilled portion of the gnllet attains asuficientlength for apackage the machine is stopped and the filled gullet compressed by means of a short piece of copperwire, Which is Wrapped tightly around it. The machine is then again started and the process, as described, continued until the gullet is entirely filled and secured. The filled gullet is then laid aside nntilthecasingis dry, when the Wires are removed and the sections of the package separated by cutting them apart with a knife. The ends ofthe separated packages are then freed from rough or projecting pieces of the gnllet and the aperture closed by means of a seal consistingof a piece of paper, preferably containingthe trade-mark under which the snuffis sold, which is pasted over the opening.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure [represents the beef-gullet during the filling opera,- tion. Fig. II shows the filled gullet after the removal of the Wires and before its separation into packages. In the said drawings, A represents the gullet, and B the Wires. The ox-gnllct is very elastic, and when compressed by the Wires, as described,does notexhibit the creases which are usually found after compressing ordinary cylindricalcasings. Consequently there is less finishing to each package after its separation from the others and before the application thereto ofthe paper seals, which are denoted by a.

I claim as my invention- 1. A new article which consists of a piece of oxgnllet containing snuti, with its ends contracted to asmall aperture, and the saidapertures closed by paper seals pasted over the ends of the package, substantially as specified.

2. An improved process of packing snuli', which consists inplacing a piece of moist 0X- gnllet having its outerend closed overthe discharge-nozzleofa sn 11H-packing machine, then filling the said piece of gullet, then dividing the lled packageinto a number of sections by constriction, then drying the connected packages, then separating them, and then closing the end apertures by means of seals, substantially as specified.
