SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,150, dated January 10, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES STANLEY, a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bracelets, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to give greater security to the bracelet upon the wrist of the wearer by preventing it from becoming accidentally unclasped.

The invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter fully and definitely set forth,

illustrated, and finally embodied in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in whichthe several letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the figures, Figure 1 is a side view of a bracelet having my improvement connected therewith, a portion being removed to show the arrangement of the parts more clearly. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the joint, looking upon the same from the interior of the bracelet.

In carrying out the invention I form upon two of the extremities of the sections A B the teeth or cogs a, alter which I rivet said sections within the box b in such a manner as that theywill be adapted to open and close with a pivotal action upon said rivets to allow the wrist to be inserted. It will be evident that should the screw engage with one of the cogged extremities alone substantially the same result would be accomplished, as one of the sections would open to allow the entrance of the wrist.

As will appear in the drawings, the two said sections A B are carried by dilferent pivots, and the cogged extremities are so far separated as to allow a screw, 0, secured in the box b, to lie between them. The threads of said screw engage with the said cogs, and when the former pivots c. The screw is provided with a fingerpiece, which lies on the outside of the box and holds the screw in position.

The operation of the device is extremely siniple. By turning the finger-piece the screw engaging with the cogged extremities causes the sections to turn on-their pivots and open or close, all as will be clearly understood.

By this device all need of springs is obviated, and the sections can be held fixedly apart at any point, it not being necessary to cause the free ends to meet to hold the bracelet upon the wrist.

It is evident that by reducing the sections A B and making some merely mechanical changes this,device may be applied to sleevebuttons and shirt-studs, and such application I wish to be nnderstoodas covering.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. The combination, with the sections A B, having cogged extremities, of a screw engaging with said extremities and adapted to cause said sections to open and close, substantially as and for thepurposes herein set forth and. shown.

2. The combination, in a bracelet, with sections A B, one or both of which havea cogged extremity,of means substantially as described, having teeth engaging with said cogged extremity, adapted when operated upon to cause the opposite extremities of said sections to come together or separate, substantially as and for the purposes set forth and shown.

3. As a new article of manufactu1e,abracelet composed of the pivoted sections A B, having cogged extremities which engage with the screw 0, the whole being arranged and combined with the box I), and operating substantially as andfor the purposes set forth and shown. a
