UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
SAMUEL WV. BIOKLEY, OF MEXICO, MISSOURI.
BRICK AND OTHER KILNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,011, dated January 10, 1882.
Application filed Februaryfl'l, 186i. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. W. BioKLEY, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Mexico, in the county of Audrain and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Kilns for Burning Bricks, Tiling. Pottery- Ware, and other wares of a kindred nature; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and accurate description of the same.
Special reference is bad to drawings hereunto annexed and letters of reference thereon, which are a part of this specification.
Similar letters refer to similar parts th roughout the several views.
The annexed drawings represent a rectangular kiln; but I do not confine my improve ment to kilns of any particular form or size.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of kiln. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation, with detail sectional views.
My invention has for its object the improvement in construction of a kiln, whereby-waste of wares is absolutely avoided and also the easy and perfect control of process of burning,
together with great saving in labor and fuel.
The kiln-walls or clamp A are made of bricks or any other noncombustible material, and of any desired thickness or height.
The furnaces or flues B ought to be made of fire-bricks, common bricks being too liable to crumble or burn out.
The openings D are small passages through kiln-wall, and at regular intervals opposite the eyes F of kiln, and used for the purpose of admitting heat into kiln.
O is inside of furnaces or .fiues. 1
a is a damper or cut-off, made of fire-clay or other non-combustible material, which, by means of iron rod 0, may be raised or lowered, as desired, for the purpose of making heat-passage 1) larger or smaller or entirely closing The iron rod 6 is hung to a cross-bar below grate-bars, the inside end being fastened to damper, and said damper a is manipulated with ease by raising or lowering outer end of said bar or lever e.
b is furnace-door. c is ash-pit door. d is small opening or air-passage from outside of pose of furnishing a hot-air draft to control and direct the fire or heat inside of kiln, and also to enable fireman to see i into kiln and watch progress of burning the wares contained therein.
c is iron rod or lever connected with damper a at bottom of said damper, for the purpose of opening or closing same. fis grate-bars. G is foundation of kiln or kiln-bed. E is sec tion of brick-kiln; F, eyes of kiln.
The walls A above dues or furnaces can be made either permanent or temporary.
In burning bricks or other wares of a kindred nature it is a fact that the nearer we approach entire exclusion of cold air from kiln the better will be contents of kiln and the smaller the loss from broken or damaged wares and waste of fuel. The ordinary methods of obtaining the desired results have in a greater or less degree proven failures.
I claim the plan herein described excludes cold air 'entirely from kiln, and by use of damper arranged as herein described, coupled with hot-air draft, asdescribed and shown, (and by use'of which the checking and breakage of wares caused by cold drafts coming in contact with the heated bricks or other wares is entirely avoided,) gives the fireman absolute and complete control over the process of burning, saves fuel and labor, and is a simple and complete remedy for the waste and damage heretofore alluded to, and a success in all particulars.
i I do not claim as new flues as applied to a kiln, either inside or outside of kiln, without vHaving fully described my invention, what- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The furnace B, provided with opening D, located at the base ofthe chamber 0 and in direct line with the fuel, in combination with the damper a, operated by means of a lever fires, substantially as and" for the purpose set pivoted beneath the grate-bars of said furnace, forth. as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the furnace B, pro- 5 vided with chamber 0, the opening d, formed Witnesses:
with a gradually-reducing size to the front WARREN B. MOINTIRE, and forming a flue for a hot draft above the S. M. EDWARDS.
S. W. BIOKLEY.
