V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SHEPHERD OF MACON, MISSOURI.
CAR-VENT! LATION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,957, dated January 3, 1882.
Application filed September 29, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I,'JoHN SHEPHERD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at M acon, in the countyof Macon and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Ventilators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of myimproved cooling apparatus for passenger cars, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view, showing conducting-tubes and ventilating-orifices.
This invention relates to an improvement in air-coolin g apparatus for passenger-cars, it being designed to collect and utilize air for coolingthe apartments; and it consists of a flaredmouth tube connected to a condensing fan and pipecomposed of sections, each section undera car having a supplemental fan or exhaustto supply the car with air, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In carrying out my invention I employ a condensing rotary fan, A, whose cage A may, by preference,be located upon the frontot' the locomotive as the most eligible position to collect o'rreceivethc air. To this cage or drum is supplied a flared-mouthed tube, B, which collects and conducts into thecage against the fan A the airproduced by the cars in motion. The inrushing airwill revolve and cause the fan to condense the air, which is taken therefrom through sections of pipe 0 O and discharged into supplemental cages and in contact with supplemental fans or exhausting de- The fans D may be located within the cars,
which is the preferred way.
The locomotive-tender pipe-section is designed to be passed through the water-chainber thereof, in order to reduce the temperature of, and thus cool, the air.
The pipe-sections under the cars are designed to be passed through ice or refrigerant chambers located thereunder to further cool the air, or rather the supply of air for each car.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the fan A, of pipe 0, and supplemental fan D, having the pipes 01' leading'into the car, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7 In testimony whereof I aflix my signaturejn presence-of two witnesses.
JOHN SHEPHERD.
