, This invention relates to hand luggage, such as wardrobe suitcases and the like, and to the fittings or fixtures therefor.
An object of the invention is to improve hand luggage andthe fixtures therefor. Another object is to provide hand luggage with means'in the form of fittings and fixtures for hanging clothing therein in a folded condition. A further object is to provide afixture for luggage, such as a wardrobe suitcase, which efficiently and compactly folds and stores garments in part of the case, such as the cover.
Another object is to provide a fixture which is removable. A further object is to provide a fixture which can be-economically manufactured principally ofsheet or strip stock. 7
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description and accompanying drawings taken in connection with the appended claims.
The invention accordingly consists inthe features of construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts as will be exemplified in the structures to be hereinafter described and the scope of theapplication of which will be indicated in the following claims. 7

While a preferred embodiment of the invention is described herein, it is contemplated that considerable variation may be made in the method of procedure and the construction of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention. In the following description and in the claims, parts will be identified by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application to similar parts as the art will permit.
Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Figures 1 to 5, there is illustrated a fixture comprising a stationary frame section 38 mounted within the cover 3| of a wardrobe suitcase 32. A garment hanger support 33 for garment hangers, such as hanger 34, is secured to the frame section 30.
The folding parts of the fixture comprise a folding middle section 35 hingedly connected to stationary frame 30 and a folding end section 36 hingedly connected near the outer end of middle section 35.
The wardrobe suitcase 32 and its cover 3! are hinged together along meeting edges 31 by hinges 38 in the customary manner and are provided with the usual latches or look members 39 and 40 for locking the cover closed. The case may also have a carrying handle 4| attached in the usual manner.
A flexible flap or curtain member 42 may also be secured to the cover along the edge opposite to the hinged edge 31 so that it can hang in front of the cover space when the cover is in open position at right angles to the case 32 and the case is lying fiat on a horizontal surface such as a table top or can be thrown back over the top edge of the open cover to expose the inside of the cover to view. The free lower edge of the fiap $2 is preferably provided with means, such as snap fastener elements 43 to co-operate with snap fastener elements 44 mounted on the lower part of stationary frame section 30 to enclose the cover space when it has been packed, and form a parti tion between the cover space and the main case space when the case is closed.

When it is desired to pack the case for traveling, garment hangers, such as hanger 34, having garments supported thereon in the usual manner are inserted in hanger support 33 by placing their enlarged ends 52 through opening and sliding them back in slot 50. The garments hanging from hanger 34 are draped over garment bar It of middle frame section 35. When all .thegarments have thus been draped, the cover folding section 36 of the fixture-is folded down over the garments so that garment bar 18 engages the middle portion of the garments at about the point required for the first fold, that is near the lower edge of cover 3|. Folding middle section 35 is folded back into the cover and is then allowed to fall sufficiently so that slots 61 slide on pivot pins 65 and the lower ends of arms 86 become engaged in channels 12 thereby locking the frame closed. While this is being done it is usually convenient to throw curtain or flap 42 back over the outside upper edge of cover 3|. When the frame has been folded into closed position flap 42 can be brought down and secured over the front of the cover by snap fasteners 43 and 4-4.

It will be noted that garment bar 18 of folding end section 38 is now disposed behind. stationary bottom bar 6| of the frame inside the cover and that garment bar 13 of folded middle section 35 is disposed inside the cover near the top edge. While almost any metal may be used for the parts of the fixture I prefer to use a light metal such as aluminum to reduce the overall weight of the suitcase. The pivotrivets can be formed of cold soft aluminum so that they will loosen up sufficiently after riveting to permit pivotal motion of theparts.
The preferred garment hanger 34 for use with the suitcase is shown in Figure 1 and details of the manner of assembly in Figure 5 The hanger comprises an aluminum wire 84 bent into generally triangular shape with a broad base and rounded lOWer corners and having the ends of the wire meeting in axially aligned relation at the crest. Asubstantially circular piece of sheet aluminum 85 is folded across its middle around the wire to cover the joint. One side 86 of the folded piece85 is bent around the aligned ends of wire 84 to provide a substantially tubular sleeve portion while the other half 81 of the sheet metal piece remains substantially flat. After assembly of part 85 over the ends of wire 84 it is stamped with a bluntly pointed tool at two or more points along its crest to form dents or depressions 9| in the wire and force the sheet metal into it, thereby locking the wire ends in the Hook member 53 of the hanger comprises a piece punched from a flat sheet of aluminum as a, straight rod. It is then bent into the hooked shape shown to form a hook portion 88 of suitable dimensionsfor hooking over a closet rod or the likewhen the hanger is removed. from the mounted rivets wardrobe suitcase. The end of the hooked porition 88 is provided on its inside edge with a rounded projection 89 which aids in preventing the hook from accidentally slipping off a closet rod, particularly small rods of polished metal and the like. A rivet .hole is provided in member 53 abovehook portion 88 and it is secured by rivet 90 which passes through hook member 53 and the two halves 81 and 86 of folded piece 85. The rivet, being formed of soft aluminum, loosens up sufi'iciently after riveting to permit hook-member 53 to swivel on the wire frame. The end of member 53 opposite to hook 88 iscut, as previously described in part, to provide a shank portion 92 terminating in an enlarged head 52 providing shoulders 54 at the two edges of the shank for supporting the garment hanger in slot 50 of support 33. It will be apparent that hook member 53 can be swiveled on rivet 9!! to bring either hook 88 or head 52 uppermost depending upon whether it is desired to use the hanger in a closet or in the traveling'case.
Figure 6 illustrates a modification in which a large part of the stationary frame inside the cover is eliminated. In this embodiment the arms 55 of the folding middle section of the fixture are pivoted on pivot pins 9 secured to sheet metal brackets 533, each of Which comprises a fiat body portion carrying the pin 84 and having an arm extending rearwardly into the cover of the suitcase and provided with holes 95 in which are or screws for fastening the bracket to the sides of the cover. A pair of flanges t6 and 9? are turned up at right angles to the body of the bracket to form a channel 98 between functioning as the fixture of Figures 1 to 3.
Figures 7 and 8 show a fixture of diiferentconstruction for performing the same functions as those previously described. Moreover, this fixture is provided with a detachable folding section which can be removed when not required. The
fixture comprises a pair of brackets 108, one of which is shown in Figure '7. It comprises a strip of sheet metal curved back at'the top end to provide a portion lill substantially at right angles to the main body of the strip, but in the same plane therewith. The end of portion)! is bent at right angles to this plane and again bent at right angles to provide a flange N2 in spaced parallel relation to the body of portion lEll. A latch member I93 is pivoted between portion lill and flange Q82 on a pin or rivet Hill extending through alignedopenings in each. Member I83 comprises a lat sheet metal piece cut or punched to provide a pivot hole at one end and having a tapered free end providing an inclined camming surface W5 having a notch I85 therein for receiving a pin ill? on the folding frame part. A wire spring N38 is wound around pivot pin I84 has one end hooked over latch member I83 and the other end over the top of the bent ,endof portion iii! to apply a spring pressure to latch IE3 tending to turn it downward. The spacing between pivot 113 and latch pin I Ill which is staked into the outside face of sidearm H2, is equal to the spacing between pin H3 and the bottom of notch I95 in latch 103 so that, when frame H0 is pivotally turned upward to closed positiompin I 01 will engage cam Stir-face I65 and raise latch I03 'sufiiciently'to allow pin It: to enter notch .06. Spring I03 will then snap 'the' latch down over the pin to securely latch the folding frame section in closed position. The section can be opened out at will by manually lifting latches "I93 to permit frame ill] to fold outward.
The mode of detachably attaching side arm --I I2 to pivot pin I I3 is shown most clearly in Figure 8. Pin H3 is a straight pin having a pair of annular grooves H4 therein spaced apart by a r distance slightly greater than the thickness of arm H2. Arm H2 has a pivot hole H5 therein and two pairs of opposed notches I I6 in its edges on opposite sides of the pivot hole. A wire clip H1 "is :fitted over arm I I 2. While variations in form of the "wire clip are possible the preferred one illustrated comprises a single piece of wire ben't'to provide four rectangular loops 'IlB which rest in notches I I6 and three bowed spring arches I19 which snap into grooves N4 of the pivot .pin when the arm is inserted over the pin. If it is desired to remove the folding section Hi3 it is merely necessary to press arms I ['2 together with :suificient force to dislodge spring arches I ill from grooves H4 and bend arms H2 inward to clear the free ends of pins I 13.

When folding frame section Hi1 is folded outward the upper edge of bar l2ii provides a stop for the frame when it is in substantially horizontal position.
Aright angle flange 12! is bent up from the rear "edge of bracket i063, or may loe provided as separatepie'ce riveted thereto. This flange carries a pivot pinnr rivet 122 on which is pivoted a sheet. metal arm I223 made of two flat strips I24 and :I which slidably overlap to form a telescopingmid-section. The overlapping ends of the istripslare provided with pairs of integral fingers 126cm opposite edges. Fingers lZfi of each strip are bent around the body of the companion strip to slidably hold the two strips together in tele- "scoping relation.

In this embodiment the arm I 23 performs the function of garment bar I8 of Figure 1. Arm 423 is kept folded up out of the way while garments are being hung in the cover and is then folded down against the mid-portion of the garments and hole 428 fitted over the head of .the pin or rivet ion the :opposite bracket. Then .folding frame section :Iiil is folded up until it is latched closed by latch M33.
Figures 9 and it) illustrate a modified fixture mounted in the cover 3! of wardrobe suitcase 32.. This comprises a pair of sheet metal brackets I29 in-the form of flat metal strips screwed or riveted to'the side walls of the cover, as byscrews I30. Right angle flanges I3I are bent up from the inner'and outer edges of each strip near its lower end. Side arms l 3 2 of folding middlesection H5 of the frame are slotted at their inner ends and pivo ed on'rivets H3 in brackets 42!). Nhen the frame is folded out the side arms rest on outer flanges its so that frame 535 is suspended a substantially horizontal position, as shown in Figures 9 and 18. Agarment bar 1-34 is secured between the outer ends of arms 1-32. A pair of inturnedright angle flanges i3! are provided on arms 132 neartheir inner ends and carry snap fastener elements j l i'into which elements 43 on curtain A2 are snapped when the curtain'is fastened down in position. Side arms I32 have double bends" its near their pivoted ends to narrow the width of the foldin middle section and allow good clearance at the side between the frame 'andthe walls, of the cover.-

Latch lever I93 is then turned or allowed to fall to lowermost position thereby turning slot I94 substantially at right angles to slot I91 and locking the arm to the bracket in pivotal fashion. The arm can readily be removed by lifting latches I93.
It will be evident that certain features of one fixture may be combined with certain features of other fixtures to form a variety of combinations in addition to those illustrated.
While the present invention, as to its objects and advantages, has been described herein as carried out in specific embodiments thereof, it is not desired to be limited thereby but it is intended to cover the invention broadly within the spirit and scope of the appended clims.
What is claimed is:
, 1. A fixture for supporting and folding garments in a wardrobe suitcase comprising, in combination, a pair of bracket members having means for attaching said members to the inside face of opposite side walls of a cover of a wardrobe suitcase and having thereon pivot means and locking means, a folding frame section comprising a garment support bar and a pair of side arms each secured adjacent one of its ends to an end of said garment support bar and each pivoted adjacent the other of its ends on said pivot means on the respective bracket member, sepa rate shoulder means on each of said bracket members to limit the pivotal motion of said arms in an outward direction with respect to said cover to a position substantially perpendicular to said cover, cooperating locking means on each of said bracket members and each of said arms comprising a channel portion on each of said'bracket members and an elongated slot in the end of each of said side arms receiving said respective pivot means, whereby said side arms and said frame section is reciprocable between a position in which the pivoted end of each of said side arms is within one of said channel sections and said side arm is locked in a closed position so that said garment support bar is positioned near one transverse wall of the cover, and a second position' in which said pivoted ends of each of said arms is disengaged from said channel sections and said frame is free to fold out of said cover on said pivot means; a garment hold-down bar, and means pivotally supporting said bar for movement between a garment engaging position, in Which said bar is positioned within said cover adjacent a transverse wall of said cover opposite to said transverse wall near said garment support bar, and a retracted position, in which said cover may be loaded with garments and saidgarments may then be engaged by andfolded under said garment hold-down bar and then over said garment support bar. l
2. Atraveling case comprising, in combination, a body and cover hinged thereto along one edge thereof, the inside of said cover providinga recess for the storage of garments, a garment hanger supportmounted adjacent to an inside wall of said cover opposite said hinged edge, 'a pair of bracket members each mounted on an inside wall of said cover adjacent to the said hinged edge, pivot pins and locking means on said brackets, a folding frame section comprising a garment support bar and a pair of side arms each secured adjacent one of its ends to an end of said garment support bar andeach pivoted adjacent the other of its ends onthe pivot pin on one of said bracket members by means of an elongated longitudinal slot therein slideably fitting over one of said pivot pins, said locking means comprising a channel formed in each of said brackets arranged to receive the pivoted end of the respective side arm when said pivot pin is at one extremity of said elongated slot, whereby said folding frame section can be folded into said cover to bring said garment support bar within said cover to a position adjacent said inside wall opposite said hinged edge, separate shoulder means on said bracket to limit the pivotal motion of said arms with respect to said cover; a garment hold-down bar, and means pivotally supporting said bar for movement into a garment engaging position, in which said bar is within said cover adjacent to said hinged edge and parallel thereto, whereby said cover may be loaded wtih garments by suspending from said garment hanger support said garments while said garment support bar is in a position folded out of said cover and said garment hold-down bar is folded out of said garmentengaging position, and whereby said garment hold-down bar can then be folded down over a mid-portion of said garments and said folding frame section can be folded into said cover to thereby .fold said garments over said garment support bar.
