EXPRESSION BELLOWS FOR ORGANS. No. 251,562. Patented Dec. 27,1881.

WARDLE E. EVANS, OF HIGHGATE, AND RICHARD W. JARREIT, OF HACK- NEY, COUNTY OF MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND.
EXPRESSlON-BELLOWS FOR ORGANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,562, dated December 27, 1881.
Application filed July 7, 1881. (N model.) Patented in England June 1, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WVARDLE EASTLAND EVANS and RICHARD WILLIAM J ARRETT, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, residing respectively at Highgate and at Hackney, both in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Musical Instruments known as""American Organs, (for which we have received Let- 1o ters Patent in England, No. 2,421, dated June 1, 1881,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement on that class of musical instruments in which an expression-stop is used to cut off the indirect communication between the reservoir and the bellows.
The accompanying drawing represents a sectional view .of such parts of an organ as are necessary to illustrate our invention.
A designates the wind-chest of the organ, above which is arranged a reed-board or bank of reeds, a.
F designates the bottom board of the wind- 2 5 chest, and E designates the middle board of the bellows, which extends downward from the board F, and has on one side the reservoir G andon the other side the bellows H, which are represented as worked by pedals H and 0 straps H in the usual way.
To the middle board, E, on each side, are secured cheek-pieces B, and those on the bellows side are connected by a strip, D, to which the bellows-leather or analogous material is se- 3 5 cured. These cheek-pieces B are provided in order to get room on each side of the middle board, E, in the board F for two apertures, 12 c, the first. of which apertures, b, is covered by a va1ve-boX,O, containing an inwardly-opening 0 valve, 0*, while the second aperture, '0, is controlled by an expressionpallet, A.
The means here shown for operating the pallet A consists of a lever, A pivoted at (1, a hinged lever, A on which said lever A operates, and a tracker-pin, 0, through which the 5 lever A acts upon an arm, 0, extending from the expression-pallet A. The lever A is op erated by an ordinary draw-rod, A, and when the rod is pushed in the expression-pallet A is opened into the position shown in dotted 5o outline.
The valve 0* is, as will be observed, arranged so as to permit air to pass from the wind-chest A to the bellows H, but not in the reverse directions.
It will be observed that by our invention we dispense with the usual valvular openings in the board E between the bellows and reser voir and make such board imperforate.
When the bellows H are operated air is drawn through the valve (3 and when the expression-pallet A is opened air is drawn from the reservoirfi also.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 5 In an organ, the combination of the bottom board, F, of the wind-chest, the imperforate middle board, E, extending downward there-- from, the cheek-pieces B, secured to said middleboard, the bellows H and reservoir G, on opposite sides of said middle board, the valve 0*, and expression-pallet A, for controlling openings leading from the windchest to the bellows and reservoir, and means for operating said expression-pallet, substantially as described.
