- An apparatus for compacting a fluent mixture in a mold comprising a supporting base, a platform on which a mold for containing a'fluent material is adapted to be mounted, said platform being fulcrumed intermediate of its ends on the base, a rotary driven element journaled above the base for striking the upper side of one end of the platform at each revolution thereof for rocking the platform in one direction, and spring means bearing on the upper side of the opposite end of i 5 the platform for rocking the platform in the opposite direction when the striking element moves out of engagement therewith and for causing the last mentioned end of the platform to be swung forcibly against the base or the rst mentioned end thereof to be swung against the driven ele* ment for rocking and vibrating the mold, and means for detachably positioning the mold on the platform and with the intermediate portion thereof disposed over the fulcrum.

This invention relates to a mechanical vibrating device especially intended and adapted to subject molds` for plastic materials, such as cement, to a vibratory action to accomplish va proper settling of the mixture while the mold is being filled to thereby eliminate the otherwise necessary step of tamping or compacting the mixture andl to produce an article possessing more uniform characteristics.
More particularly, it is an aim off` the invention to provide a machine having a vibratory` platform on which the mixture receiving vmold is detachably supported and which is preferably vibrated by a teeter-totter or rocking movement for agitating they mixture within the mold t0- uniformlyv compact the mixture.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a mechanism for the above described purpose' of extremely simpleconstructionv which isy capable of beingeconomically manufactured and sold, which is durable and eiiicientin operation, and which isv relatively light and capable of Vbe. ing readily moved about as required.`

Each'y of the lili, bearings I4. include a bear-ingl block I5, an inverted U'-shap,ed bolt I6l havinglegs extending downwardly through the blocl lli and through the base S and provided with nuts Il on the lower ends thereof. The bearings Ilialso in- 29. clude a bushing I8y which is clamped: bythe bolt I6 and nuts II between the upper surface of the block |51 and the intermediatey portion of the bolt I6. Ashaft I9 is journaled in and extendsA through the bushing I8 and is provided with a 25- belt pulley 2D on oney end thereof and in longitudinal alignment withv the belt pulley I3, An endless belt 2l is trained over the pulleys i3 and 29' for revolvingthe shaft I9 off of the shaft I2. The shaft. I9 is provided with a longitudinally 30l disposed eccentric or cam 22, which is disposed between the bearings I4 and which is welded or otherwise secured thereto, asl seen at 23. The outer half ofthe cam or eccentric 22 is substantially semi-circular in cross section, as 3 5` clearly illustrated in'Figures 1` and, for a purpose which will hereinafter becomey apparent. A rod or pipe 24, of circular cross section, is disposed on the-upper side of and transversely to the base 9, substantiallyintermediate of the shaft 40,' I 9 and the end of the base 9 which is remote thereto. The rod or pipe 2,4.is secured in position on the base 9 by meansof a pair of spaced inverted U-shaped bolts 25 which are engagedv thereover and which extend through the base 9 45 and are provided with threaded ends to receive nuts 26 for detachably clamping the member 2li in position on the base 9.
The pipe or rod 24 provides a fulcrum for the intermediate portion of a platform 2l which` r5.0,I reststhereon and which is retained against lat-- eral displacement by the intermediate portions of the U-bolts 25 and which is held against longitudinal displacement by depending cleats 28, between which the intermediate portions of the rod or pipe 24` is disposed. rlhe upper side of the platform 21 is provided with transversely disposed longitudinally spaced cleats 29, correspondinfg ends of which are connected by a longitudinally disposed cleat 30, which is disposed adjacent one longitudinal edge of the platform 21. A turn button or bar 3I is rotatably mounted intermediate of its ends on a shank portion of a headed pin 32 which is anchored in a side edge of the platform 21. The turn button or bar 3l is disposedY on the side of the platform 21 remote to the cleat 3B and when in an upright position projects above the upper surface of said platform to cooperate with the cleats 29 and 30 for engaging the base of a mold 33 to retain the latter, detachably in position on the platform 21. The turn button 3| may be swung to a position parallel to the platform 21, in which position, it will be disposed below the upper surface of the platform to facilitate the removal of the form 33. A reinforcing strip 34, preferably of metal is countersunk in the upper surface of the inner end of the platform 21. and is provided with a depending flange 35 which engages against the inner end of the platform 21. The reinforcing strip 34 is secured in position by a plurality of driven fastenings 36.
The platform 21 is provided with a perpendicular .bore 31, adjacent its outer, opposite end through which a portion of the shank of an elongated bolt 38 extends and in Awhich said portion is loosely disposed. The bolt 33 is provided with a lower threaded :portion which extends through the base 9 and which carries` a nut 39 located therebeneath. An `expansion coil spring 40 is disposed-on the upper portion of the bolt shank,
between its headed upper end and the upper side of the platform 21 and abuts against a pair of washers 4l which are located between the spring and the bolt head and platform.
The form 33 includes a bottom' 42, an end wall 43, side walls 44 and 45 and an opposite end wall 48. The end wall `43 abuts against and rises from one end of the bottom 4'2 and the side walls 4d and 45 are swingably connected to the end wall 43 by hinges 41. The ends of the side walls 44 and 45 are provided with outwardly opening notches 48 to receive portions of the shank of a nut and bolt fastening 49 which is detachably engaged therewith for holding said last mentioned ends of the side walls in abutting engagement with the side edges of the end wall 46. The lower portion of the end wall 4'6 abuts against the opposite end of the bottom 42 and the outer side of said end wall abuts against cleats 55 on the side walls 44 and 45 and said end wall 45 is provided with a pair of Vupright From the foregoing it will belreadily apparent that the form 33 may be Viilledwitl'ra cement mixture in a fluent form through the open top 56 "75 thereof while the form 33 is supported on the platform 21. As the form 33 is thus being filled, it is vibrated by a rocking motion of the platform 21 relatively to the base 9 on the rod or pipe 24` as a. fulcrum. This oscillation of the platform 21 is accomplished by the operation of the motor II for driving its shaft I2 and the shaft I9 through the belt and pulley connection 2|, I3 and 20, all of Vwhich parts rotate in a counter-clockwise direction, as seen in Figure l. As the shaft I9 is thus revolved in a counterclockwise direction, its eccentric or cam 22 at each revolution thereof contacts the bearing strip 34 on the upper surface of the platform 21 for swinging the inner end of the platform 21 downwardly, to permit the ycam or eccentric 22 to pass thereover. As the inner end of the platform 21 is thus swung downwardly, the outer end thereof is'swung upwardly to compress the spring 40 which reacts to swing said outer end downwardly and back to its position of Figure 1 or therebeyond, when the bearing strip 34 is disengaged from the eccentric 22. This repeated teeter-totter type operation of the platform 21 and the mold 33 as the latter is being filled with the fluent cement mixture, not shown, insures proper settling of the mixture thus eliminatingA the necessity of tamping or otherwise compacting the mixture. After the mold 33 has been filled while being subjected to vibration, the mold may be removed by turning the button or bar 3l to a released position. The side and end Walls are then removed by release of the fastening 49, after :Erst removing the cores 53 and the block is left to set on the bottom 42 as a pallet to form a block having external dimensions corresponding to the internal dimensions of the mold 33 and having bores extending therethrough of diameters corresponding to the external diameters of the matrices 53. The side and end walls, cores 53, and fastening l49 are immediately reassembled for reuse with another bottom 42.

I claim: 1
An apparatus for compacting a fluent mixture in a mold, comprising a supporting base, a platform on which a mold for containing a'fluent material is adapted to be mounted, said platform being fulcrumed intermediate of its ends on the base, a rotary driven element journaled above the base for striking the upper side of one end of the platform at each revolution thereof for rocking the platform in one direction, and spring means bearing on the upper side of the opposite end of i 5 the platform for rocking the platform in the opposite direction when the striking element moves out of engagement therewith and for causing the last mentioned end of the platform to be swung forcibly against the base or the rst mentioned end thereof to be swung against the driven ele* ment for rocking and vibrating the mold, and means for detachably positioning the mold on the platform and with the intermediate portion thereof disposed over the fulcrum.
