0.R. OLSEN.
BARBED FENCE WIRE.
No. 251,276 Patented De0. 20,18 81.
WITNESSES. IJVYEJV'TOR.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLAF R. OLSEN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, 'ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO HORATIO O. NEWOOMB, J R, AND HARMON H. FULTON, OF SAME PLACE.
BARBED FENCE-WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,276, dated December 20, 1881. Application filed October 1, 1881. (No 11181101.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLAF R. OLSEN, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed Wire for Fences, of which the followin gisaspeci fication.
My invention consists of a wire fence in which a single wire shall carry the barbs, which shall be secured in place by enlargements formed alongside the same in the body of the wire.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a section of wire provided with barbs which are secured thereon by my improved method; Fig. 2, a section thereof on the dotted linexar, and Fig. 3 a section through the barb on the dotted line 3 The barb A, I prefer to make star-shaped, with a hole through its center. It is strung upon the wire B during the process of making the enlargements thereon, or it maybe slitted and put on afterward. The wire B is a single straight wire, with two enlargements for each barb, one on each side, to hold said barbs in place. These enlargements may be made by any means; but I prefer to use a machine which I have constructed for that purpose, which seizes the wire at regular intervals, as it passes through the machine, by means of stoutclamps and upsets said wire sufficiently for the purposes stated.
I am aware that spurs have been attached to wires, and also that-spurs have been formed by cutting into the body of the wire. In the one case, however, an extra piece of material has beenemployed, andin theotherthestrength of the wire has been impaired, thus either increasing the cost or decreasing the efficiency of the fence. I confine myself to a wire in which the projections to hold the barbs in place are formed by an actual enlargement or upsetting of the wire.
The advantages of using only one wire instead of two are obvious.
The star-wheels, being mounted on a single wire, will turn easily, and will not therefore be likely to tear the skin of animals that comein contact therewith.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A single wire having enlarged parts or portions integral therewith, said wire having substantially the same area of cross-section throughout its length, except at the places of enlargement, and provided with barbs held between said enlargements, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and' seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 28th day of September, A. D. 1881.
