G. W. MILLER DUMPING GAR.
Patented 1360.20.1881.
. Inventor:
Attst. wm fw/a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE IV. MILLER, OF TROY, ILLINOIS.
DUMPlNG-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,061, dated December 20, 1881.
Application filed July 28, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in Madison county and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in End-Gate Hinges for Dump-Oars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hinges and the man nor of attaching, constructing, and operating the same upon dump-cars for opening and closing their end-gates.
The objects of my improvements are, first, to open and close the end-gate with expedition and greater safety; secondly, to hold the endgate suspended upon a hook and pivots entirely out of the way of injury from any material being dumped; thirdly, to greatlystrengthen and keep in proper shape the side-boards and end-gate, which is desirable. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughoutthe several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation with the gate down. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with a car tilted and gate up. Fig. 3is an end elevation of the gate.
In Fig. 1, A represents an ordinary dumpear, used for mining purposes, standing upon a tipple-block, B, of a railwaytiack, O. The car is held in position on the tipple-block by the standardarm Z), so it cannot move forward on the wheels a awhile the contents of the car are being dumped upon the screen D by opening or raising the end-gate E and the tipping of the car end wise.
The end-gate E, Fig. 3, is made of usual form, thickness, and material used for this purpose. To this gate I attach, as shown at ff F, rigs. 1 and 3, one (or more) of my improved hinges, which is made of metal or any other lower arm,f, near the bottom of the end-gate,
and the top arm,f, is fastened at a point on the end-gate in line horizontally with the pivotpins jj, which are firmly attached to the sides of the car, and on which the hinge F is jointed. The arms f f extend and are fastened to the end-gate, as shown in Fig. 3.
Rigidly secured upon the end-gate E is an eye or staple, G, Fig. 3, extending above its body, into which the suspended hook H, which is pivoted on I, catches, and by the tipping of the car endwise upon the tipple-block opens the end-gate and holds itopen and suspended by it and the pivot-pins j j until the contents of a car is disch arged, after which the car drops into place upon its trucks and track with the end-gate closed automatically, and is held by the hinges ready for use.
By the use of these hinges and the manner of attaching them to the sides of a car and endgate the several parts are held firmly in place, and the dangers and difficulties of opening and closing dump-car end-gates, as now in vogue, are avoided.
Having thus fully described my invention and set forth its advantages and operation, I claim as new, and desire to secure Letters Patent therefor, as follows:
In the construction and arrangement of a dump-car, the eye G, suspended hook H, and pivot I, in combination with the end-gate E, hinges F, car A tipple-block B, and other parts specified, as and tor the purposes shown.
GEO. WM. MILLER.
